Navy — Increased Sonar Testing in Local Waters

The Navy is planning to increase their testing of underwater weapons — including Sonar — in the Hood Canal, Puget Sound and off the Washington coast. There will be an environmental review process and a public comment period.

For security reasons, the Navy won’t give any detailed information about the tests they plan to conduct. As one person said, “How can the public provide meaningful recommendations if we don't know what they're doing in the first place?”

Some people are afraid that marine life and commercial fishing could be jeopardized by these tests. There was a huge outcry against the Makah for killing a whale. Massive sonar testing could be much more hazardous to whales. Whatever damage is caused by these tests wouldn’t be up close and personal like the Makah hunt was. Will there still be a public outcry?

I’m in favor of national security as much as the next person, but are these additional tests necessary? What do YOU think?

And in OTHER NEWS: Port Angeles — for at least the second time this year — has had another occurrence of that mysterious weather phenomenon that only happens here. Whatever this exact occurrence is, it’s the opposite of rain. When it rains, the rainfall total goes up. When this mystery phenomenon occurs, the rainfall total goes down. Neat, huh?

P.A.’s total rainfall was 6.80 inches for awhile, up through last Friday’s edition of the PDN. Now, according to yesterday’s and today’s editions, that total has shrunk to 6.57 inches. OOOKAY.

Yes, there's more to life than keeping track of the rainfall totals. It’s just an ingrained habit after years of living in California. With the constant fear of water rationing and fire danger, I always looked at the weather page for forecasts and to see how much precipitation we’d gotten; to see how bad the following summer was going to be.

I'd like to know who they plan on shooting? The North Koreans? The Iranian blue water fleet? Perhaps those pesky troublesome Canadians....

The government and its companion, the military industrial complex, are 600 pound gorillias that pretty much do as they please, claim it to be in the interest of "national security" and therefore "you don't need to know".

Shut up, eat your cheerios and be happy in knowing that sedition was not part of the Patriot Act.

off this topic, but why can't the highway (101 outside of Sequim) have the roadwork done at NIGHT, like every other place on the planet with a half ounce of BRAINS? It making business travel a BEAR, and I can't afford a 2 hour wait, on an already long drive (it's bad enough the Hood Canal Bridge was closed several times yesterday, and once for almost 40 minutes to let a sub pass). Getting to and from Seattle took a whopping 9 hours!!!! (Where, off season, it usually takes 5 hours). What sort of idiots run our highway projects?

That roadwork outside of Sequim must have been planned by the same wizards who planned all the construction projects in Port Angeles. Gateway construction, both 8th Street bridges being torn down and the Tumwater Truck Route being closed all at the same time. (Yes the truck route is reopened but still.) And soon they'll be working on the sidewalks and water mains in downtown P.A. Hope nobody will be in a hurry to go anywhere.

Yeah, but NO ONE has been working at the Gateway for days...did they lose funding or something?
I must admit, I've never seen such "genius" in local government. What is the deal? Are they trying to get us far into debt as possible, and emulate the Feds?

Edna Petersen has brains. It took real brain power to get rid of the farmer's market and re-open Laurel street. Who was the brains behind that ... Edna Petersen!

We need brains on the city council. Edna Petersen has one brain and perhaps a few others in the stockroom of her store. Let's elect her to our City Council!

WHAT!!!! Talk about the biggest BONEHEAD move of the last decade! Moving the farmers market FROM Laurel street. Put us on the map as the stupidest city government in the country!!
Our downtown is dying and a junk/trinket tourist rip-off store owner is someone you are promoting as a good city council choice?
What planet are you from?

Yes, please explain to me how moving an event that gets people out of their cars and walking around downtown to somewhere else, helps downtown. I wouldn't want to call anyone a bonehead but I certainly can not see where it helped anyone.

I think the 28th September is being ironic.

Personally, I think it's a hilarious post ... especially the part about her having a few extra brains in the stockroom!

Check the batteries on your irony meter, please. If you don't have an irony meter, Necessities and Temptations has a few on sale.

by "on sale" you mean at only 200% of the wholesale price, instead of the usual 300%?

As an alternative, you could always go to a city council meeting, if I recall correctly, they had out BS meters at the door....
