Port Angeles Police Chief

With six possibilities for Port Angeles’ next police chief, there might be some changes in the air.

I don’t have any firm idea of who I want, but Don Lanpher, police chief of Aberdeen, South Dakota, sounds like he would shake things up a little. Aberdeen, SD has less than half the crime rate of Port Angeles. When Lanpher first took over as police chief of Aberdeen, he fired several officers for violating department rules. Several other officers resigned or retired because Lanpher was “difficult” to work for. Sometimes "difficult" is a good thing.

Now I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. I don’t know anything about the Port Angeles Police Department, any of the officers, how they work, etc. But the Aberdeen police chief sure sounds like he's been doing something right.

Port Angeles’ crime rate is way too high. According to this same article, we have roughly the same crime rate as Concord, CA, which is a huge crowded traffic-clogged suburb of San Francisco. Not good.

All six of the police chief candidates seem highly qualified. Whoever gets selected has his work cut out for him.

Concord is very conservative, bordering on redneck. I think their crime rate is low for a large suburb. Since it's mostly white, there's very little gang warfare or racial crime.

And P.A. isn't conservative, bordering on redneck? Are we living in a liberal, multi-ethnic paradise?

Concord,CA is NOT conservative, bordering on redneck. Geez, guys!!!! It is a bedroom "commuter" community (for the most part). It is racially mixed (about 60% white), has a population of 122,000. It is home to a huge mall, multiple big-box stores,a large music venue, a large waterpark, and a very active community college (Diablo Valley College). The rapid transit train BART runs right through it. The per capita income in Concord is above the state average.
Concord is next to several lower income communities (Pittsburg, Bay Point) and the nexus of a scramble of freeways. It's major crime tends to be daytime break-ins.
The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 398. The number of murders and homicides was 4. The violent crime rate was 3.1 per 1,000 people.
By COMPARISON: Port Angeles has about 18,000 people (92% white), no large mall, no water park, no commuter community to a large city, and only one road through the town. We're located in a remote area, and the majority of crime tends to be drug related. Income in Port Angeles is BELOW the state average.
The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 46. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 2.5 per 1,000 people.
The difference between a violet crime rate of 46 and 398, and the .05 difference in the crime rate per 1,000 people is MAJOR.
Your comparison is flawed.
