Port Angeles Budget Cuts

A “bare bones” budget will be facing the Port Angeles City Council in 2008. Even though the city will have about a quarter of a million dollars more than they did this year, 2008 will be tighter because of cost of living increases and unfunded mandates.

The City Council will decide on October 9th which areas will need to be cut — parks & recreation, roads, personnel, etc.

What do YOU think should be the city’s spending priorities? What should be cut?

I vote to get rid of the head of public works. Isn't he the biggest cause of the bloated budget?

Maybe all the elected officials could work for minimum wage (or at the very least, the average income for PA)? If they had a real sense of civic duty, they would.

Tom, perhaps this should be another topic, what's the deal the city is making with the docs who are interested in the old city lights building? Did I read that part of the package is turning Oak St. into a parking lot, so this new business enterprise has parking? WTF?
If we can't have farmers market downtown closing a Street why then oh why can we close another Street?

I haven't heard about that. There was an article in yesterday's PDN about OMC and the medical clinic that's relocating to Oak St. I don't remember reading anything about turning Oak St. into a parking lot. I've already thrown away the paper and the article isn't available online.

That would really suck, and the Powers That Be would have to explain why one street can be closed permanently and another street can't be closed for three hours twice a week. (Not that they ever feel the need to explain themselves.)

From what I understand, the empty lot on Oak Street is going to be turned into a parking lot.
