Reduced Property Values in Dungeness?

I’ve never seen this building in Dungeness, but it seems to have the neighbors in an uproar. Some of them are saying the garish colors of this building — a large garage with an apartment on the top floor — are bringing down their property values. They’ve even asked the Clallam County Assessor for relief from their property taxes, claiming that the large purple-lavender garage has lowered the value of their properties.

That might be hard to prove, with the economy being the way it is.

Homeowners’ associations are notorious for regulating everything a homeowner can do — what color the house has to be, what kind of plants are acceptable, whether pets are allowed. But from the PDN article, it doesn’t sound like this neighborhood is governed by a homeowners’ association or any other regulations.

I’m personally in favor of regulations against “monster homes,” “McMansions” — whatever you want to call them — that dwarf already-existing homes and block people’s views. But these regulations would have to be clearly written ahead of time. You can’t change the rules in the ninth inning.

I don’t think there’s any legal recourse for the neighbors of “Barney the Purple House” or the “Purple People Eater” — two of the building’s local nicknames.

Bunny says:I got such a kick out of that article. "We've gotten out and met our neighbors" What they discovered is that they are united in their fear and hatred.Nice neighborly values.

I'm glad we don't have purple houses in Port Angeles. And hey ... I thought downtown was supposed to be spruced up this weekend? Looks the same to me.

gee, seems THAT DARNED purple house has driven down house prices all over the country! California has been harder hit by the purple house than Washington State. Some purple house, isn't it.
Amazing how silly people are.

The downtown sprucing up doesn't start until May.

There's lots of purple houses in PA. I just saw one yesterday at... errr... I think somewhere near Jim's Pharmacy.

The downtown spruce up will happen during the time the Hood Canal Bridge is down. That much cleanup and painting won't be able to be done over a single weekend. With all that needs to be done, I doubt it'll even happen over six weeks, but we'll see. In any event, a "thank you" in advance for whatever the volunteers can accomplish.

But, to the point, I feel sorry for anyone living in that purple house's neighborhood. Those neighbors will probably constantly be peering over each others' fences. "I don't like that bird feeder, I don't like those drapes, I don't like the way you dress your children." Geez.

You gots to be careful. I always watch the folks next door to see what they're up to otherwise they could get up to all sorts and who would know any better?

I am counting Socialists in my neighborhood. So far I have counted 23 of them. 23 anti_Americans! You bet I'll be keeping an eye on them. I'm retired so I got plenty of time.

there is a huge purple building on the plateau between front/first. It's purple and brown!! Its in plain view of the ferry, so arriving tourists first sight of PA is a purple monster building!!
The painting isn't finished, because the slowest painter in town is doing it (taken 3 years so far), but it's certainly PURPLE, next to a green house!!!
GADS....is there no zoning violation! No wonder our house values are dropping.. we can blame the large purple building. Cite that owner, get them to stop, to repaint (probably take another 3 years, though).
