NOAA Not Coming to Port Angeles

Thanks to two commenters at the previous post, I've learned that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will not be relocating to Port Angeles. They'll be moving to Newport, Oregon instead.

Here, here and here are the links they provided.

I never for a moment thought that they would. Better logistics for them where they are, even if it costs them more.

I am curious though, how much money did the city piss away trying to get them here with their wet dream?

A months operation of the pool? Two? Three? Four? Just wondering.

I'm disappointed by this, but not surprised. I don't know about Newport, but Port Angeles does not have the infrastructure or resources for the sciences. It's just not a science town.

*Sigh*

Maybe one of these days folks/leadership will start to understand Port Angeles is just too far away from support services, with too small of a resident population to be economically viable for most any business enterprise.

Can think of all the folks in recent months that referenced "NOAA coming to Port Angeles" as evidence of how things were going to get better here.

Wishful thinking may feel good, but reality is always still there "the morning after".

BCC check out the new PDN story online. it includes the amounts the city spent. The city spent about $50,000, the Port about $100,000 and the County about $25,000

Can we blame this on either Max or Edna?

Got me, and there are plenty of fools at city hall, some of them way overpaid.

I just like to sling shit at the wall and see what sticks. :-)

I'm not real clear on this difference between the port and the city, aren't they married?

One thing I can't complain about is the cost of my yearly boat launch permit, it's still under 30 bucks a year.

Friends, do not despair! Max Mania has vowed to fight this injustice and bring NOAA to Port Angeles where it belongs.

We've heard nothing from those "other candidates" about this outrage. That's because they simply don't care. But Max Mania cares!

Who loves ya, Port Angeles?

Max Mania!

From todays' PDN article:

" Capt. Michele Bullock, commanding officer of the Pacific Marine Operations Center, told the Peninsula Daily News that finances and the quality of life for the staff in the location were weighed when the decision was made."

Yep! Guess the meth hags and vacant stores just were not appealling enough to win the day for Port Angeles.

There is a reason that NOAA isn't comming here, and that is because there is nothing here. Companies want thier employees to have a quality of life i.e places to shop things to do,good schools, and so on we just don't have that here in P.A. right now. If we elect the right people to the city council, this could change. I am voting for Rick Burton he tells it like it is.With him there is no second quessing, and he is for the people. Max Mania on the other hand is going to turn P.A. into another Port Townsend, or worse bring his San Fransico type politics and ideas here.I earge everybody to think about this election carefully, and vote for common sense, vote Rick Burton

Count me as another voter for Rick Burton.

The usual supects are lining up behind Max and Edna respectively and they're going to push their radical agendas. Max is in with the arty crowd and thinks this town can be another Ashland or Port Townsend. As for Edna, she's too in with the powers that be that run this town and she'll be sucking up to them every chance she gets.

Rick Burton, on the other hand, is the real deal and not full of b.s. arty schemes and in with the in boys. He's a true independent and he's got common sense ideas for this town.

We spent $175,000 trying to get NOAA here? What a waste of money! Why, think of how many City Manager hissyfits we could have afforded with that!! Or payouts to the Incubator!!

Oh, and I don't believe for a second Max Mania will single-handedly get NOAA here. What injustice? We lost, it's going to Oregon. Even if Oregon didn't have those advantages, Port Angeles was hardly a shoo-in. So if we really think luring big companies and organizations here is worth it, let's figure out why we lost and go from there.

But we might want to start with asking if it's really worth it.

Is he going to provide spelling and grammar classes for all?

"So if we really think luring big companies and organizations here is worth it, let's figure out why we lost and go from there."

Is it really that difficult to figure out?

When was the last time you patronized any businesses on the I-5 corridor to any meaningful extent? Too far away for Port Angeles residents to support those businesses, companies and industries??

Ya figure that most folks over there are not going to drive out here to patronize any businesses here, on a scale required to make them profitable?

ANY business worth its' salt will do its' research, and see that there is not enough of a local population, or support services to keep them afloat, as NOAA did.

And, yes, it sure is not about individual candidates for city council in THIS town!

There is no way that Port Angeles could ever "become a" Port Townsend. We're a dippy little ex logging town (i.e blue collar company town mentality) that has nothing in the way of charming brick downtown buildings (full of businesses open on Sunday and catering to tourists). Instead we have a lot of buildings that have no appeal, and landlords with no interest in creating any, empty storefronts, and vacant lots. Open your eyes...we have none of the appeal, and none of the cache.
Port Angeles is a town without an identity. It oozes no idea of what it is, or how to go about becoming anything other than confused. It's the dumpy middle aged frump with hair in rollers, wearing a dirty housecoat and fuzzy slippers..full of illusions that she's an enticing sex kitten.
Sad to say, but true.
We are far enough away from EVERYTHING that it would take massive overhaul and a keen vision to remake the town into a destination for tourists. Something that more than half the town (the old-timers) do NOT want. And, something that would only happen if all the big fish in this little pond could line their pockets. (Which would make the costs to do such a project even more highly unlikely.)
I do not see one candidate changing the city council, and the reality is, the city council isn't who makes the city deals....from what I can tell it's all backroom, old family, and mysterious. If we had any brains at all we would STOP the cash bleed with the buttloads of bucks on ego-driven b.s. like the 'incubator", on HarborWorks, and who knows what other sweetheart deals designed to take $$$ from the citizens and redistribute it to a select few individuals. There is no doubt -- if we follow who gets the money, we'll figure out who is really making the decisions in this town. Unfortunately, their decisions are all about themselves and NOT civic pride, or advancement, or creating more jobs with better pay for any one in this town.
Pride is something of the past, obviously. It's what Port Townsend has, and something we lack. This town and 99% of the inhabitants, can't even follow through to do what they say they'll do....(try asking people over for a barbeque, or get someone out to fix a fence). This town should be renamed NO SHOW, or FLAKE OUT. The majority of this town has a laid back, don't care, not going to do it unless there is something in it for me mentality.
Our town is really a very silly little town who thinks it's something big and grand. Illusions.
The more you point out that the fantasy is not what anyone (in their right minds) see. That the "beautification" is a sham, that the "economic development" isn't even in the ballpark, that the "tourist attraction" is a joke -- the more people jump up and down and get angry and flail their arms...and paint buildings babypoo brown claim progress.
The town needs to wake up, and take a real assessment of what is here. Why businesses fail. Why it's near impossible to attract businesses. Why we are the ugly sister in a beautiful area.

Forty or fifty years ago the downtown was nothing but whorehouses and bars. Respectible people did not come anywhere near downtown.

Franky, I think the city should cash in on the past and open up downtown to whorehouses and bars. That would bring a certain type of "tourist" in and revenue, as well.

Political infighting and chicanery in our city surely had something to do with it. Who wants to come to a city where there is chaos and a bunch of fools pulling each other's hair and screaming like little girls? We get a city manager who quits, collects an amazing severance (37K or there about - negotiated by the fools) and then , Pardon me while I hyperventilate, THEN the crew running Harborworks tries to hire him for $225 per hour as a consultant.

Yeah, who would want to get mired down with these kooks.

Someone in a comment above mentioned the Incubator. Look on their site. See who runs what and their connections to the people on Harborworks and the city and someone who is giving up her/his council seat.

Something interesting to read: http://blogs.openrecords.org/2008/07/21/washington-cities-play-secret-squirrel/

Zoe, thank you for that link. You mentioned ex-city manager Madsen. You might be interested to know he quit when members of the council began questioning the renewal of the Incubator contract. I cannot remember exactly, but I believe it came out in the PDN that he was a member of the Incubator. Interesting timing, his tantrum, eh?

"You mentioned ex-city manager Madsen. You might be interested to know he quit when members of the council began questioning the renewal of the Incubator contract."

Of course, you all know it was Madsen, Rogers and Williams that came up with the idea for HarborWorks. Rogers husband works for Carroll Realty, she is the secretary for the Incubator and Williams also works for Carroll Realty.

Rogers private business is as a consultant "providing a bridge between business and government" (no conflicts THERE!), and then the "Business Incubator" does WHAT?

Then Madsen is going to be a consultant for the psuedo governmental entity he helped create?

Have you looked into who Jeff Lincoln (Director of HarborWorks, $115,000 per year)"knows"? Those in the know say he has had a long time relationship with a prominantlocal. I'm sure that had NOTHING to do with his selection, or his decisions.
