Sequim Wal-Mart to Add Grocery Store
Twelve to eighteen months from now, the Sequim Wal-Mart will have a grocery store. There will also be a remodeling of the existing Wal-Mart building.
About 85 new employees will be needed when the grocery store is complete.
Let's hope the already-existing grocery stores can hang in there.

good it'll keep the Sequimers from PA, and, oh by the way, Safeway has nothing to worry about, Walmart's grocery section is terrible.
I'm not sure how it will go down but the new Walmart store here sure seems to have plenty of cars in the parking lot everyday.
A friend said that a Safeway clerk told him that business had really dropped off there.
I think that if anyone has to go out of business it will be SAAR's. But will it matter? There will still be plenty of completion in town to keep prices down and that is what everyone wants.
I did a walk through of the new store yesterday, a pineapple for $2.98 and a gallon of milk for two bucks is going to draw shoppers.
Both Safeway and Walmart are within walking distance of me so I suppose I'll shop at both of them.
Hey, Walmart employs 300 of our neighbors, maybe they don't pay as well but at least they have jobs.

Ask all the employees of SAARs if it matters.

Of course it will matter to them, but I've lost jobs when the business went under.
Yet somehow life went on. Welcome to earth, third rock from the sun, stuff happens, deal with it and move on.
Some of the current employees may not be there anyway if they have to close, being wise enough to be looking for other jobs now.
I still had to buy groceries at Safeway, Saar's and Albertson's even after going to Wal*Mart the other day.
Milk and eggs are still the only good things there. It dropped some of the stuff I could only get at the old store. I noticed that some prices were exceedingly higher than the other markets.
Not really that impressed with it.

Are you saying that you run all over town trying to save a buck?
I never go to Albertson's unless I'm already on that side of town and want some deli chicken.
If SAAR's goes down I'll miss not being able to get my co-co mix there.
Well, I mostly eat stray dogs, poached deer and stolen vegetables so I don't spend much at grocery stores anyway.
SAARs is the best grocery store around. I haven't shopped in Safeway in years, and loath Albertson's. Wouldn't step in a Walmart if Johnny Depp were dancing naked in the place.
I hate Walmart. Hate the junk. Hate the attitude. It's not cheaper it's crappier.
If SAARs goes out of business, how many people (total) will be put out of work?
I know Port Angeles is the current hot spot for the Nations' employment opportunities, so, it won't matter. Right?
As the PDN article about the new Wal-Mart speaks of the 30 new jobs it created, it doesn't talk about the local jobs lost as a result of the new Wal-Mart. I know, it hasn't happened yet, and, the PDN is a "good news" paper. They don't do any "imvestigative" reporting, nor run articles that may harm local business.
Will be interesting to see, next spring, how many jobs were lost in this community.
Not that it really matters.
I remember when Payless and Albertsons were built on Lincoln Street - people said "that's the end of Swain's"...Swain's stayed and Swain's is still here after the Plaza was built, K-Mart came in and went, and Walmart came in the first time - and Swain's will remain - why? They made themselves unique, offer great products and customer service and adapted to the market - that's what it take to succeed! And a whole lotta Hard work!!!
"I remember when Payless and Albertsons were built on Lincoln Street - people said "that's the end of Swain's"..."
Yeah, surprising, as the clothing prices at Albertsons' are so much lower than at Swains! Same with Albertsons' fishing gear. How DO they compete?
One thing about the doom and gloom crowd, there's always a disaster lurking around the corner. Seems like, about this time last year, someone predicted downtown would be 60% empty by February. Well, February came and went and, while there are some vacancies downtown, it's hardly in the 60% range.
But, I'm sure Walmart will have a crippling effect on downtown. This year, for sure, 60% vacant by February.

I will agree with you on this one. I can't take the stuff from the 'net channels like "Truthout" or "Alternet" because it is ALWAYS negative.
Of course there are bad things happening, every day. That is the nature of life. But to focus on the negatives, exclusively, just is too much.
One of the mistakes I think organizers for political efforts sometimes forget is that most people want to be on a WINNING team, not a losing team. So, to try to mobilize support for causes by solely focusing on the bad and negative only goes so far. People just numb-out after awhile.
Having said all that, I DO think it was poor community planning to allow the new Wal-Mart in town.
Great! I'm tired of QFC and Walmart who have higher prices because they are unionized!
