Peninsula Plywood Closed

Josh Renshaw, president of the mill, said he hopes to reopen.  The company is working on debt restructuring.

Josh Renshaw said "We're in an uphill battle for sure."

Grant Munro said:  “There’s still hope, and I’ll just leave it at that.  We’re still trying some things.”

Thanksgiving Day: What am I thankful for? I am thankful that Pen Ply is FINALLY dead. Anyone with any sense knew, KNEW this is how it would end. And now, at last, the other shoe has dropped.

Josh Renshaw may well be a moron for trying this wildly outdated idea at this time, and for running things so incredibly badly. But, I think the real idiots in all this are our City Council, who wasted staff time and energy and money in order to get a $500,000 handout to Pen Ply - which only enabled them to SCREW THE CITY and thus ALL UTILITY RATEPAYERS out of over $300,000. Yep, we are ALL supporting Pen Ply, whether we want to or not, because we'll have to make up that $300,000.

Only Max Mania spoke up against this waste of city resources and taxpayer dollars. So what I would be thankful for moving forward is if the rest of the City Council were to learn to listen to him a little more, being that he seems to be the only one of them who looks at these situations and actually applies logic to his decision making.

This is the Harbor-Works decision of the current City Council. Hopefully, with Sissi Bruch on board, also applying logic to decisions, we can move past these boneheaded disasters into a sustainable, realistic future.

Oh, I'm SOOOO shocked to hear this.. yawn..

Yeah, it "re-opened" with millions in "loan guarantees" from the Federal Government. Those mean that it could fail, and everyone gets to walk away with the money.

And, here we are.

So our city council facilitated a $500,000 state grant in order to help lose $300,000 in city dollars?

Brilliant! $800,000 in taxpayer money down the tubes.

Josh Renshaw, Jeff Lincoln, who really cares, so long as someone is there to waste our money on a hopeless cause, right?

Right?

Shut down, and still owing the city and port big money.

Big surprise.

They saw it coming, but didn't see paying back their public supporters as important.

PenPly and Harborworks are both examples of how badly run this town is. Lack of vision would be fine if the politicians got out of the way, but these people, mostly good ol' "conservative" types keep meddling with the economy. They honestly believe that throwing taxpayer money around like drunken sailors will bring about some sort of paradise.

Harborworks was all about "jobs" without ever considering that jobs aren't a given. Build it and they will come? Not necessarily! Having a government-run development would provide a temporary employment boost for construction workers, just like any state-run project. But it's not sustainable. The Rayonier site would sit empty just like all those vacant buildings and lots around town. No jobs, no tax revenue, just more taxpayer money sunk into it to keep up a ghost town.

Try telling that to these local "conservatives" though. If you question wasting taxpayer money on something that should be left up to private business, like PenPly Harborworks or that bus terminal should have been, then you're some sort of socialist traitor. Like anon 8:12 says, only the liberals like Mania and Kidd are questioning this crap. What a backwards group we have here!

Like I always say, hope in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up.

We would have to feed them 2/3 million a year to keep them afloat, that mill is too antiquated to be a profit maker and the city fools should have known that. Being so smart ya known.

Ya'll just don't get it, do you?! How many times do you have to see this game played, before you catch on?

These folks never expect PenPly, or HarborWorks, or the Incubation Center, or any of these subsidized projects to actually do anything. The game is to con the State or Federal government out of "grant money".

Look back over the last 10 years, and see how many proposals were pitched (by a interestingly small group of people), received varying amounts of "grants", and as of today, we have NOTHING to show for it all.

But, that money sure got spent.

Where did it go?

Make a list, and check it twice.

no surprise here,
1. hire "too many people" so you can get free rent from the Port
2. overbuild with "too many people" which sucks up all your cash
3. drop price to liquidate excess inventory = loss
4. try it again and again = excess debt to all your creditors
5. do it with secured loans = chapter 7 banckrupcy

"We can't have biomass on the Peninsula because the liberals won't let us."

Biomass burning will only happen if, once again, they can con the State and Federal government out of "grant money".

Look into the past articles on this. How many millions of taxpayer money is Nippon getting?? Will it happen without those millions of taxpayer monies??

Yes, "Get the government out of things, because private enterprise can do a better job".

Right. With millions of taxpayers money to make it happen.

"Keep up the good work ACTI, we need the jobs."

Aren't ACTI clients the Government?

So, we want "government" to "cut spending", but only the spending that affects others, not us. Right?

The conservatives in each segment of our country yell for cuts in spending, and no new taxes. THEN, when it comes to THEIR health services, THEIR local government dependent industries and contractors, and any other cuts that will actually have a negative impact on THEM, suddenly they are outraged the government could consider such cuts.

Calling for cuts is easy, until it impacts you and your loved ones.

Unemployment benefits should be cut to six weeks, maximum. Studies show that people find jobs once the benefitss run out.

Duh! Those folks that want jobs, want to work and be productive members of society find a job. Those folks that want to freeload live off unemployment.

Get a job!

When were these studies done? When there WERE jobs to apply for?

The last job I applied for, over 120 other people also applied for. FOR ONE JOB. (I asked their HR person, that's how I know...)

So, I guess there are over 120 jobs just waiting out there for those of us not hired?

And for the record, I'm not living off unemployment - it ran out over a year ago. And I'm not lazy, AND I'm very willing to do work that's "beneath" my skill/education level. BUT THERE JUST AREN'T THAT MANY JOBS OUT THERE. Just aren't. So...What am I doing wrong? Where do I go, oh wise one, to "just get a job"? Help me to understand how I can stop being a "freeloader" and get back to work, because, frankly, it's pretty scary NOT having work. It's pretty scary being in the middle of the worst economy since the Great Depression.

And it's pretty scary that some people actually believe the crap put out there about everyone who is out of work being lazy.

And what is your view, oh wise one, about the wisdom of our government pouring all sorts of money into failing PRIVATE businesses like Pen Ply? Doesn't that just mean Pen Ply is on the dole too?

Hi. Yeah, it's me again. You know, the one with the job. Uh huh. Well. I feel your pain and all but you need to face some facts.

First of all: Wal-Mart is hiring, even for Christmas. Get your backside down there and apply. Also, Gordy's Pizza is looking for a delivery driver. Unless you're one of those "I'm saving the planet by not driving" loonies you should apply there, too. Lots of jobs out there!

Second: You should have got a better degree. Now you're probably one of those who tuned in, turned on and dropped out. See what good rolling around in the mud at Woodstock did for you? Or, possibly, you returned to academia only get a degree in Tibetan macrame, Advanced Hatha Yoga or Outreach to Unwashed Hippies. Again: FAIL!

Next: Take some pride in yourself and sharpen up a little. Lose the graying ponytail and beard, gramps. Looking like Mr. Far-Out was old by 1978. If you're a chick, buy a bra. Seriously. No one cares how many natural births you had down on the ashram.

Then: Stop blaming society for your lack of a job. As Herman Cain recently said: It's not society's fault that you're a failure, it's your own fault.

I'm wondering how you've managed for a year without unemployment and, if you had the money, why you were on it to begin with. So, yes, that makes you a freeloader.

I'd say something rude like FU but seriously, that's not going to do a thing for you. Better, wait, its going to get way worse, and when you are affected you'll be the biggest crybaby in the lot.

Yes, and you can waste your vote on him, too. As you might have noticed, he is pretty well discredited, and he himself is reconsidering his ability to represent pretty much anybody, at this point.

Is he speaking about himself in your quote? And, you speaking about yourself in quoting him?

Just sayin'..

Anon 5:41 PM, November 30, 2011 makes a LOT of assumptions.

Working at Wal-Mart: Well, actually Dick, I put in an application there. And guess what? I never heard from them, I'm guessing because even the watered-down resume I gave them showed that I'm overqualified for stocking shelves. I doubt I fit their "employee profile" and they undoubtedly have no shortage of those who do.

Degree: See previous comment first. Yes, you could probably always argue that someone didn't get THE hot degree of the moment. But I have a degree. Here in Clallam County that just seems to make you suspect in many eyes, being that so many long-time locals don't have degreees. (More than a few of the movers and shakers/big business owners didn't even finish high school.) And I don't see what getting a degree has to do with Woodstock, especially since I WASN'T EVEN BORN WHEN WOODSTOCK HAPPENED. So your making big assumptions here, Dick.

Pride: Again, some mighty big assumptions displayed here. I am clean cut, presentable, and have plenty of job interview appropriate clothes. Your ageist and sexist digs here only show up the shallowness of your so-called "wisdom." Oh, and as the previous comment would imply, I'm too young to have gray hair.

Money: How have I managed for a year without a job? Well, my spouse has a job and we have scraped by and taken on more debt. That's how - and that's how many people are living now.

And finally, Dick, I'm just wondering why YOU avoiding answering the question about giving away TAX PAYER DOLLARS to obviously failing concerns like Pen Ply. Funny how you sort of skipped that, but had plenty of time to take ill-informed cheap shots at just about everyone. Hmmm...I'm sure you'll have a pithy comeback for that, though. It might not be factual, it might not make any sense, but it's probably pithy, and pissy.

Hope you're enjoying the recession/depression. Most of us aren't, Dick.

So - the PDN article today confirms that the reason for keeping the lights on at Pen Ply is so that Grant Munro can make money by exploiting the situation to skin and store logs for export to China. Big deal that Pen Ply came up with a payment of a measly 10 percent or less of their delinquent bill. What a great boon to the other ratepayers that would be if all the other people struggling to pay their utility bills could simply pay a small fraction of the delinquency and keep the juice flowing.
