Union Dissatisfied With OMC contract

Service Employees International Union Healthcare Local 1199NW is threatening legal action against Olympic Medical Center for approving a labor contract that was not endorsed by union membership.  Local 1199NW represents 350 nurses and other health care workers at OMC.

Local 1199NW president Diane Sosne said she hopes to settle the dispute at the bargaining table rather than the courtroom.

You know, I think they make good enough wages, I know a young lady that started working there recently and started at 28 bucks an hour.

So a well trained and entrenched nurse must make much more.

How can we afford medical care if everyone is making high wages? They should be ashamed of themselves for being greedy.

Yep. Everybody, except you and me, makes way too much money for what they do...And sometimes, I'm not too sure about you!

You just have to wonder about all the "haters" out there who can't offer anything to a conversation except to complain about something or somebody else. We live in a capitalistic society. ALMOST ALL pay levels are set by the market, EVEN GOVERNMENT PAY! Every employer has to make the decision about how to "set" his/her pay schedules. Do you want to be a pay leader, paying top dollar and getting the top people? Or, do you want to be the training ground for other firms, paying only entry level pay and letting your best employees go to some other firm once they have experience? Somewhere in between is where most companies fall, and so they should. Workers must be paid "the going rate", BUT NOT MORE. To do otherwise is short-sighted.

Sure Billy. When its time to put that catheter in , you can go ahead and let that minimum wage Guatemalan Immigrant do it . Me, I'll wait for that UNION nurse with 20 years experience. And I'll be happy to pay the difference.

Be grateful you can afford it. Not all of us can so we do without.

Yeah, I see that every day, as I read about those financial executives getting million dollar bonuses as they fail to guide their businesses from collapse. The companies get taxpayer bail-outs because they are "too big to fail", and the execs get bonuses for their "top quality" professional performance.

I'm glad I can afford it. I'm not grateful to anybody about it... But if you think underpaying healthcare workers is somehow going to show up as "savings" on your bill, you're mistaken- they will simply send the unqualified minimum wage aide and charge you for a nurse.

What a "let them eat cake" statement! I'm not going to have a bill BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD HEALTHCARE! I can't afford insurance and if something goes wrong I'm either going to have to do without or get in massive debt.

You obviously have NO CLUE what's going on outside your ivory tower. Wake up and smell the coffee! Your days of plenty are OVER and the rest of us have to live with the wreck you've made of this country!

I pay my own health care and my premiums are up 200 dollars a month 789 for my wife child and myself. Since health care reform all premiums are up for everyone. I think this is the beef here. Mostly i dont like omc but i have to take their side on this one. If their premiums went up like mine thats 70,000 a month and 840,000 and year.

It’s getting old hearing about people that don’t make a living wage that complain that they have to pay so much for whatever. Because I have to, so should you. Nurse’s chose a trade, went to school to make a living wage. It’s like “ALL” trades. They chose to better themselves by going into a trade to make a good wage + benefits. The rich want to get rich and not pay the work force that does the work.

May you be healthy, and able to work forever. Unfortunately, there are plenty of honest, hard-working folks who get sick in one way or another, and become un-able to work. Or who lost all their life savings in financial scams. You might have heard about foreclosures; it is all the rage across the country these days.

Yeah, I agree. It IS getting old, hearing about what has happened to so many.

This is really about the old management scam of making workers responsible for the greed and incompetence of the bosses. Do you think that healthcare workers made the decision to convert our small county hospital into a "Regional Medical Center"? All this capitalization for expensive equipment and facilities that are readily available 2 hours away? Sure, lets pay for all this stuff on the backs of healthcare workers.

I think that nurses at OMC should not get medical benifits for part time work. most professions don't give great benifits for part time hours.
I stand with the hospital, the employees at OMC are greedy!
