Caffeinated Clothier Closing

The Caffeinated Clothier, on First Street near Lincoln, held a farewell concert this past Friday.  They will be closing soon; they don't have an exact date yet.

It's a combination of a coffee house and a store selling clothing and gifts. They've only been there for a little over a year.  Their cappuccino is excellent.

With the rents, the unbelievable amounts of taxes (utility rates, fees, parking costs, etc.) and the other insanity, I'm surprised we have ANY little businesses in town. Walmart and the other chains get big breaks, but the burden is on the little guy. And, since downtown is so uninviting in so many ways (and it's not due to truck traffic), the "events" planned by the downtown association totally suck (lifeless, unimaginative, and totally on the backs of the little businesses to do the heavy lifting)there is no support. I'm sorry to see the CC go. But, their fate is the same as the fate of the two coffee shop owners before them -- sad to say the downtown is jinxed.

Too bad.

I never went in there, only because they weren't offering anything I need.

Speaking of downtown businesses, I saw a new one that is an internet cafe kinda thing. Didn't see any customers in it, but, that isn't unusual for downtown Port Angeles.

Or how about the discount tobacco store that sells discount tobacco? Neat place. Discount, bulk tobacco stored properly in extra fancy discount humidors, and sold in such a neat way by such friendly people. If you've never tried smoking tobacco, give it a try, and support these people and downtown Port Angeles.

How about if we put a $20 a pack tax on tobacco. Most useless stuff ever and people who use it should grow up, get off the addiction, and get healthy. How about we make this a tobacco free town? I'd be all for that.

Yeah, that was an interesting article. "We're having a farewell concert because we're closing... someday... maybe..."

What? Are you some kind of Communist or something? You can't take my rights away like that!

And, I expect the taxpayers to pay for my health care if I get sick, or anything.

Newsflash: Former Port Angeles Mayor, Karen Rogers is now in full-on image rehabilitation mode with a leading role in a fundraising campaign for the Boys & Girls Club. In a prepared statement, Rogers explained that she "feels real bad" about having spent her years on the City Council "pretty much destroying the future of Port Angeles, and thus, of its boys and girls," and hopes to make amends with her latest overture. When asked what she thought of those critics who suggested this move was simply the latest cynical ploy in a long, well-documented history of such things, Rogers simply smiled and muttered something that sounded like, "and your little dog, too!" She then exited the press conference on her broom.

In related news, the ghost of Jeffrey Dahmer has agreed to become a spokesman for PETA. At a seance/press conference held to announce the deal, Dahmer spoke movingly of his commitment to animal rights, and of his refusal to eat (almost all forms of) meat when he still had a physical form. He will appear in an upcoming series of national ads and PSAs for the animal rights group.

In other related news, the ghost of Adolf Hitler has been signed as the latest pitchman for Manischewitz food products. A corporate press release explained that the company hopes to "strike a hip, ironic note in its advertising by employing such a well-known historical figure." For his part, Hitler explained that he has, "always been very, very interested" in Jewish culture, and looks forward to the opportunity to be seen in a new light thanks to his relationship with Manischewitz.

Oh, just wait. You will enjoy the Waterfront Particulate Festival they have planned for mid August. It almost didn't happen, as a core group of organizers were determined to name it the "Authentic Particulate Festival" but a compromise was reached.

"smoking is good for you"
Bullsh*t. It's why I am an orphan -- both parents died of lung cancer, as did 9 out of their 10 friends who smoked.
You must be smoking more than tobacco to actually believe that nonsense.

Town should open a METH store (after it's quasi legalized, of course) which also sells "bath salts" and lots of colors of paint (for the huffers). That place would be booming, and bring people in droves down.

Wanna venture a guess what office she'll be running for?

What happened to the made-to-order sandwiches at Country Aire?

Two weeks after they opened that huge new store the made-to-order sandwiches got axed and replaced by pre-made skimpy sandwiches and tiny wraps. What?!

Is that store under new ownership or something?

Anon 2:14 p.m. asks: Younger families moving away for better opportunities, better quality of life, or have people just stopped makin' babies?

Some of both, I'm afraid. I remember that this was totally predicted (and reported in the paper) by the PASD Business Manager, way back in 1998!

To REALLY know Port Angeles, purchase an eighth of a pound of fudge (any kind but NO nuts), a pack of American Spirits, and a short, triple, Americano, and go out to the pier, the very end, at noon on a rainy windy day in winter. And eat the fudge really fast, saving one piece. Smoke two cigarettes while drinking the espresso, in under ten minutes, facing the wind and rain. Best effect if it's not pouring, and windy. Then eat the last piece of fudge while running back to your...

What's NDN Video? On the Peninsula Daily News website, there are links to news involving a man who apparently likes to eat face, Selena Gomez' leg, raw video of a teenage girl being killed, and a woman proclaiming that she did not know she was pregnant. Are these local stories? I admit I'm curious and missed the story about the guy who chewed off someone's face. I'm curious if he swallowed but don't want to click on the link and get a virus. Glad to see they are on top of thingsm regardless.

"Real estate excise tax proceeds, which pay city debt service, may need to be subsidized by year’s end."

This, at the bottom of an article about the city council "mulling over" funding the fine arts center.

Think that statement through.

Where is the in-depth analysis of this very potentially serious development??

The interim City Manager says he expects the economy to "improve" locally in the next 3 years. Based upon what?

The "happy news" reporting style of the PDN is not doing us any favors. The City is continuing to decline, all the while the PDN reports as if everything is fine.

FOR BACKGROUND:

In 2006, John Crow (of Green Crow) gave $1000 to Friends for Mike McGavick, Republican. The same year, he also gave $500 to Mainstream Republicans of Washington Federal Fund.

In 2008, John Crow gave $3200 to Doug Sutherland, the Republican in a race against Democrat Peter Goldmark for Washington Public Lands Commissioner. (The same year, Green Crow also poured $25,000 into a PAC promoting Sutherland.)

More recently, in 2011, John Crow gave $500 to Jim McEntire's campaign for Clallam County Commissioner.

Even more recently, as in, this month, John Crow gave Sandy Long - so-called Independent - $900 for her campaign for Clallam County Commissioner. Her campaign treasurer is Becky McGinty, who is chummy with Karen Rogers.

Sandy is portraying herself as progressive, as "almost a Democrat." She is not. She is very, very conservative. Look at her donors. Look at who she associates with. Just check the Washington PDC website, or Google people like John Crow of Port Angeles.

Maggie Roth is not the only Republican in this race.

Thanks, Anon 8:59AM for the research. Being a "stealth" candidate and supporting views opposite to what a campaign claims shows a lack of integrity.

In my experience, when Republicans pay for something, they expect that something to stay paid for. This is bad news for Sandy's image as an "Independent."

Please keep in mind who "Anonymous" is -- and what his vested interest is. I actually was happy that Dale Holiday was running UNTIL her husband started his slash/burn campaign on all the other candidates. He has particularly gone after Sandy Long, which tells you she's the one they're afraid of.

At this point, I would NOT vote for Dale Holiday. Simply put, if she needs to torch the field in order to get elected, I DON'T WANT HER.

Let's try to evolve a little, OK? Smearing everybody else does not make you look good.

First of all, no one has disputed the accuracy of what was posted earlier. They just jumped right to making assumptions, and, as would be expected, trying to place blame. In this case, they're blaming one candidate, Dale Holiday, and ignoring the fact that other candidates, like Patti Morris and/or Maggie Roth, would be interested in getting this information out. I mean, wouldn't Maggie be pissed that John Crow was giving money to Sandy Long? I'd think she would be.

And did I mention that no one has disputed the accuracy of the information?

As for Dale Holiday posting this, well, look at the time stamp. I doubt she's doing it from her job at the County.

As for anyone, anywhere being afraid of Sandy Long...Well, that's just laughable. She's just a vanity candidate with no hope at all of winning. All that's changed is that now she's a vanity candidate who also appears to be deceptive.

Info on John Crow's Republican donations can be found here:

Scroll down to find John Crow's donation to Jim McEntire here:

And some more of his Republican contributions here:

http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/contributions/john-crow.asp?cycle=06

And you can find the latest PDC report for Sandy Long, with John Crow's $900 donation, here:

http://www.pdc.wa.gov/qviewreports/results.aspx?rpt=http://hera.pdc.wa.gov/PublicAppXtender/ISubmitQuery.aspx?DSN=IMAGE&AppName=PDC&FILER+NAME=LONG+SANDRA+W*&OFFICE+SOUGHT=COUNTY+COMMISSIONER&ELECTION+YEAR=2012

Just click on the C3 form for 6/25/12. The same form also documents a $200 contribution from Joseph Price in Sequim - who also gave $200 to Jim McEntire. (Sandy Long only has a handful of donors, so it seems significant that these very generous donors are ones that seem to only support Republicans.)

Now, obviously, Mr. Crow is free to donate to whomever he wants. But from looking at his record (and the record of Green Crow), it seems clear he wants Republicans. So, since he's giving SO generously to Sandy Long, may we assume...
