Crime in Port Angeles: What To Do?
Next November we’ll probably be voting on a measure to increase the local sales tax. The increase would be one tenth, two tenths or three tenths of one percent. The tax increase would be used for funding more sheriff’s deputies, assistant prosecutors, public defenders and a new Superior Court judge.
It’s clear that we need more law enforcement personnel. Vandalism seems to be everywhere, and serious crimes — last Friday’s attempted mugging (in the middle of the day) was the most recent — are getting more brazen. One judge said his caseload has almost doubled since 2001.
What do YOU think we should do about rising crime in the Port Angeles area? Do we need more police officers on patrol? More surveillance cameras in public places? Will viligantism start becoming more common and more acceptable? Do you think raising the sales tax is the way to increase law enforcement and reduce crime?
What's your perception of crime in the Port Angeles area? Do you feel safe when you're out shopping, doing errands, strolling around? If not, what's your solution?

More police officers and stricter penalties when the perp gets caught.
I think people have had enough. If we don't get the police protection we need, more of us will start taking care of things ourselves.
We are supposed to be getting a downtown Resource Officer soon. Hopefully that will help! We need vandalism and graffiti control, and certainly want to avoid another purse snatching in broad daylight!
There isn't enough for teenagers to do in Port Angeles. If we provided more options for them maybe they wouldn't leave town and move to Seattle or California as soon as they get out of high school. We need to find the root causes of crime here and not just lash out at the symptoms.
We can blither about the "root causes" of crime all we want, but the top priority is keeping our homes safe.
Impeach
I have my house and yard and car booby trapped for the next punk who wants to try something. We need to handle things ourselves.
I agree with Anonymous #5 -- IMPEACH!
The worst thing to happen to downtown P.A. was for the Lee Hotel to be turned into housing for the wackos. It's like a carnival of freaks.
Hummm... Wackos and freaks, My belief is that there is room for everybody and a place for everybody, the wisdom of having said housing in such a small downtown is certainly questionable. As far as feeling safe, the answer is absolutly not. we need a more vibrant downtown including more condos/apts and more police protection and outdoor dining, more arts and crafts oh, and how about a farmers market. In general more life, street level life that doesn't include large trucks.
How about parents taking accountablity for their kids. Parents....do you know what your kids are up to?
Stop rampant meth use in Clallam County and you'll take a giant bite out of of the problem. Jail users when they are caught instead of letting them out because there is no room to jail them, or they seem non-violent.
