“Simple Majority” for School Levies

Even before all votes have been counted, the “simple majority” requirement for school levies has apparently passed. (Clallam County voters rejected it.)

With two Port Angeles schools closing, do you think the local school district still needs more money? Should school levies be passed by just 50.1% of the voters, or should we have kept the 60% supermajority requirement?

I have kiddies and my mother was a teacher for over 40 years but making it easier for the guberment to get their grubby mitts into the cookie jar is never a good thing. I don't get to go to my boss and say "Gee, I need more money. Gimme."

The military has an appropriate acronym that fairly accurately represents my feelings on this and the recent decision to toss out the 1% property tax cap: 'BOHICA'.

Of course if the 1.9 trillion dollars poured into the sand in a couple of certain middle eastern countries had been spent domesticly, we probably wouldn't even need school levee's.

Yes, I think a simple majority is fair. If football and baseball stadiums can be built by simple majority passage then we should be able to continue supporting our schools without having to pass school levies by a super-majority. At least, that is, until we can elect state representatives with the courage to pass a better funding system.

Action at the state level will not lead to a solution. Reform needs to come from Washington DC first, not Olympia. Consider some recent events. Our great President ImANutJob demands 200 billion with no strings attached for 6 months of war but rejects 35 billion for 5 years of children's health care. Just who's pockets do you think that 200 billion is lining?

Guess what. They don't care about you and me. Come 2009, there will be just another pig living in the farmers house (ala George Orwell's Animal Farm) no matter who gets elected.

Its certainly nice how the county gets more money by not raising the tax rate but just saying your property is worth more.
