A Prison for Port Angeles?

Mayor Gary Braun mentioned the possibility of building a prison in Port Angeles. Prisons are a necessary evil but do we want one here?

According to the mayor it could create up to 300 new jobs. But is this the image we want for Port Angeles? As Karen Rogers said: “It’s just not a good fit for this community.”

City Councilman Larry Williams said he's heard from lots of people about the idea. “They told me we already have a prison in Clallam Bay, and they would just as soon leave it out there and expand it if needed.”

What do you think?

If anyone would like to live in a small town populated by hundreds of prison guards, try it out somewhere else first. Crescent City, CA is a small town surrounded by beautiful scenery and close to a prison. And it's one of the bleakest places on earth. Go and live there for awhile and see if you want Port Angeles to mutate into something like that.

it's a bad direction. The town should consider how to make itself a tourist destination, not an inmate destination.

If they ever do build a prison in P.A. they'll probably build it right smack in the middle of downtown, and then move some of the most prosperous businesses out to Race Street or East 8th Street.

I don't see why we shouldn't have a prison downtown. We already have a loony bin, why not a prison?

Gary Braun has made my list of morons.

He apparently got the idea after reading the story about another small town in Montana who had the same idea. $27 million dollars later, they are stuck with no jobs.
