Heritage Weekend, Second Friday Art Walk and Farmers Market
Busy weekend coming up for Port Angeles. Heritage Weekend will be this Saturday and Sunday.
And don’t forget the Second Friday, organized by Bob Stokes for the second Friday of each month. Galleries participating in Second Friday include: Studio Bob, Waterfront Gallery, Anderson Gallery, Zenzizi, itty bitty BUZZ, Art Front (on the first floor below Studio Bob), Jack Gunter Art & Design Ideas Gallery and the Long Gallery (both at Landing Mall). Second Friday is really taking off; it's putting Port Angeles on the map as an artists’ community.
This Saturday will be the unveiling of Bob Stokes’ Avenue of the People — the newest installment of Port Angeles’ outdoor art collection. It will be nine sculptures along the west side of Laurel Street, downtown.
And last but not least, the Port Angeles Farmers Market will be back downtown this Saturday. And if I’ve understood correctly, they won’t just be in that parking lot next to The Toggery. They’ll be — better sit down for this — ON Laurel Street where they used to be. Ah, the memories.
UPDATE: Yes Laurel Street WILL be closed off for the Farmers Market tomorrow (Saturday). The street will be closed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be live music at the Farmers Market. The market will close at 3 p.m. They usually close at 2 p.m. but the PDN article says 3. After the market closes, there will be "entertainment related to the 6 p.m. Avenue of the People ceremony." That's as specific as the PDN article gets.
Check it out.

I've got to be honest, I rarely ever say anything positive about Port Angeles. But I'm really glad that this town is starting to come alive. Seems like there's a lot more things going on these days, a lot more activity happening, and a lot more people milling around downtown lately. You know, just things to do. Might not be to everyone's tastes, but at least it's something.
I'm sure there'll be a host of naysayers about the artwork, the people that are invading downtown, and the Farmer's Market (oh noes, hippie people!)... but, hey, whatever. As far as I'm concerned, it beats the heck out of the '90s! Way to go, Port Angeles, you get a gold star for the summer!
Hey, that all sounds great! We really have a nice town here, and the art certainly helps make it a destination. Things are looking up for Port Angeles, which is nothing but good.
I'm so glad we have Bob Stokes. He's a major force for building up Port Angeles as a great place to visit, as well as the great place it's always been to live. Yay, Bob!
I understand the City Council is considering renaming the town to Port Stokes.
So far the rain hasn't kept people out of downtown. Huge crowds at the farmers market, the vintage cars, along the waterfront. PA rocks.
The unveiling of the statues was really a neat event. There must have been about 100 people there, really cool to see so many Port Angeles people turning out for this. There was really a strong intangible feel for the "character" of Port Angeles.
It was a very moving event.
OK, I don't get it. What exactly are those things supposed to be?
I don't "get it" either, but art is like that. I'm glad these sculptures are here. Art enriches a community, whether a person "gets" an individual piece or not. I like music even when I can't follow all the chord changes.
Pardon me, but I don't see how a person can be "enriched" if they don't understand what they're looking at. If you're saying that one can see in a piece anything one wants then the artist has failed in their job.
Those things are "supposed to be" people, the ordinary people who live in Port Angeles and make it what it is. It's interpretive, which I think is the point!
Always great to see the naysayers come alive.
This was a great event, not only the Unveiling of the Ave of the People, but also the Farmers Market and Car Show on Laurel St.
Lots of folks enjoying our downtown seeing what we have to offer and spending there money.

Sorry to have to disagree with you. As an artist I very rarely title my work as it takes away what the viewer brings themseleves when viewing art. Of course unless your like the masses and just have to have "Reflection" etc. giving you some direction.
I am so happy for all the folks that are doing such a great job of preseving our heritage. If you had a chance to go on the "Historic underground tours" then you would see how a dedicated few are willing to give of their time as volunteers to help this worthy endeavor stay alive. You have to remember that it is "OUR" history that is being preseved for the enjoyment of all who live here. You don't have to be born here....you just have to be proud of your city. If you realized just how many volunteers put untold hours into making Port Angeles the great town that it is...you would be amazed. They do it because they love it here and they want to keep it a place all can enjoy.
Uh oh! Better check out one of the rants in the Rants 'n Raves column of today's PDN!
