Jefferson County Buses — Point-Counterpoint

Buses in Jefferson County might start looking like a He-Said-She-Said billboard on wheels.

Next month The ACLU is planning to put the following sign on Jefferson County buses:

“YOUR RIGHTS with Border Patrol Agents on this bus — If you’re a U.S citizen, you don’t have to prove it. If you’re not a U.S. citizen and you’re age 18 or older, you must show your immigration papers to federal agents. Everyone has the right to remain silent.”

And now Ron Gregory, chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party, wants to put this sign on the same buses:

“PLEASE COOPERATE! If a Border Patrol Agent questions you on this bus. Agents are doing their job. If you are questioned, be courteous. If you are not a U.S. citizen, always carry your immigration papers and please show them. Cooperation is always better than confrontation!

This seems a little different from previous Republican slogans about “big intrusive government” and “too much government meddling,” but what do I know?

Thanks for posting on this- more info is better.

This is a local issue, unfortunately our local papers are not living in 2009 as far as web based discussion of news articles, on-line comments, blogs, etc.

Thanks for what you do here.

I am a member of the Republican party, and as such I am DISGUSTED at the stance of the Jefferson County chairman. These are the type of government empowering neoconservatives that give the Republican party a bad name. "If you don't say anything, that's confronting..."???? The message Gregory seems to be espousing is, "Do as you're told, even if you disagree. Forget your principles, give up your rights and follow along."

The Border Patrol has absolutely no right to stop and question citizens without cause. Not to mention that this game of catch and deport does nothing to protect our economic and immigration interests. We should welcome all the hard working self-sufficient workers who want to come here. And as for the ones who don't want to work and are a strain on our system, we must remove the government sponsored hand outs and freebies that reinforce this behavior.

Was anything in the ACLU sign untrue? No, but Gregory wants to post another sign, encouraging passengers to go along and not resist. What is his motivation for doing this? If that would be his personal choice, fine, but who is he to visit his views on everyone else, telling them what they should do? His sign also states, "Agents are doing their job." Since when is it the job of any government agency to harass and ask for the papers of its citizens? Gregory's pro-government propaganda is not the position of all Republicans but it is "high profile" positions like this that make me understand why others dislike our party.

Mr. "Anonymous,"
How many illegals have they rounded up...and how many had criminal records? Like 22 so far?
Methinks the Border Patrol is doing what we PAID them to do, capture ILLEGALS. What is it about that word "ILLEGAL" don't you understand?
Is your View of the world upside down? Is Al Qaida the good guys and the Border Patrol the bad guys?
What is wrong with your head? Too many drugs?
The Border Patrol is doing THEIR JOB folks...a good expenditure of my tax dollars!!

remaining silent is confrontational?

“YOUR RIGHTS with Border Patrol Agents on this bus — If you’re a U.S citizen, you don’t have to prove it.

Wait a frigging minute, how do they know what I am if I don't prove it? "Here's my enhanced drivers license, don't sweat me, I'm just headed over to city hall to blow that fucker up."

Welcome to anarchy.

"Don't pay any attention to my friend next to me, he doesn't give a crap about the politics in this country, he's just here to try to make a few bucks doing jobs that Americans don't want to do."

Jesus frigging H Christ, Americans are so frigging brainwashed and stupid. Generally speaking of course, I'm not saying that any of you are.

Lets switch tracks. Have you ever noticed that newspapers in this country have investigative reporters that pick on leaders and stupid projects?

Have you ever noticed that the local rag never seems to?

Why? Because the editor is one of 'them', one of those self important right wing religious wingnuts that supports every stupid fucking thing that comes up because they see money in it for them.

Really, do you recall him ever protesting anything? It's not about you, stupid, it's about them.

He's a fucking christian that thinks his god is going to make everything okay. Meaning that he is fucking insane.

He doesn't think much of environmentalists that care about this planet and he won't print my letters to the editor because I once told him that he is an idiot, what is with that?

My, my, how can a card carrying minister talk like this? Does this work for you? "Because I"m surrounded by fuckin' idiots."

And those fuckin' idiots are running the city.

Today the tyrant rules not by club or fist, but, disguised as a market researcher or capitalist, he shepherds his flocks in the ways of utility and comfort.

May I digress again? I dropped into the Eagles this evening and was talking to old friends that I seldom see anymore being as I tend to stick to home these days and asked an engineer that worked on that project about the bridges and an earthquake.

He wasn't sure on if they are earthquake resistant being as the city is so tight. But he assured me that they are, um, loose, ha ha ha.

Here's to them leaders driving over them a lot, we just may get lucky if a quake hits when they are on them.

God will of course save them, okay, whateverthefuck.

Have I properly amused you this evening?

I wouldn't join any party that would have me as a member, ha ha ha.

Besides, anyone that belongs to one of the two major parties is a frigging idiot.

Ah geez, did I just offend someone? Because I sure hope so. :-)

Yes, it is when the officer asks you a question. He asks you a question, you answer it. Would you be silent if he was asking for a description of someone who just robbed you?
Otherwise we may as well all live in anarchy...of course the left would love that!

now the trick is....teaching people to read

You do not have to answer these agents. You can ask them "are you detaining me" and "may I go". The reality is.....the ACLU is right. You do not have to cooperate.

On the positive side I heard that for the Gateway to Victoria parking garage (that was built on the cheap so they could have it) that they will apply for some of the government stimulus money to upgrade the clock to talk.

"Three bells and all is coo-coo - coo coo - coo coo."

Ha ha ha, these monkeys amuse me if I look at it in the proper perspective.

Anyone that thinks they understand the difference between left and right (except of the far right religious crackpots) in that house of mirrors is living in their own little delusion. :-)

Don't put a label like that on me, I'm the moderate looking at all those mirrors and trying to make sense of it all.

I think that both the left and the right are our enemies. They all want to be lord over us and for us to serve their self serving interests, those mostly being more riches for them.

Actually the border patrol has arrested approx 140 undocumented aliens in the last 4 months on the Olympic Peninsula alone (and they weren't all hispanic).

I wonder who they (the aliens) were working for?

Somebody should investigate/arrest the employers too.

I want a sign on a bus that says gas, grass or ass nobody rides for free.

Kudos to the border patrol.

Would this also include all the legal Americans that work freelance and make deals under the table also?

Hell, that would be 3/4 of the people in this town, including the business people.

Face it, we screw the government out of all we can. Is that right? The short answer is yes and no.

I want a sign on a bus that says gas, grass or ass nobody rides for free.

Having some old hippy in me but not being into pot I just want a bumper sticker that says. ASS, I'LL PROVIDE THE GAS, ha ha ha.

Previous poster's question:

That is a different issue entirely. They are taking advantage of the Government by not paying taxes and screwing those that do pay taxes.

I wonder what it would be like if we all did that?

My 1040 would be easier, I wouldn't need to write off all that money I spent at the whorehouse as a business expense.

I too am a registered Republican - but why is the GOP telling us to goose-step towards a police state? The Border Patrol has the same constraints on them as other enforcement agencies, they must have probable cause to detain individuals. Ask any question they want, I vote to keep silent.

Oh, on that voting thing I may now want to change my party affilliation...

There's really no difference between the two parties. Neither have any principals anymore. They have both lost the plot.

The Border Patrol (aka Homeland Security) has taken the legal stance that the border extends 100 miles inwards. FYI, at border crossings you do not have and constitutional protections.

The Border Patrol is increasingly aggressive in it's disregard of the constitution, US law, and civil rights. Most recently violating the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 by using active duty Marines to perform policing duties at checkpoints in CA and AZ.

They will continue to escalate their 'enforcement' unless people stand up. We do not need the Border Patrol here, nor do we need their tainted interpretation of "security".

"Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither."

The Marines at checkpoints were supporting the California Highway Patrol.......Not the Border Patrol

I think we're talking about 2 different things. This post was about two opposing billboards on Port Townsend buses. One billboard reminds everybody of their rights when they're questioned by the Border Patrol; the other urges cooperation with the Border Patrol.

Your link is about the California Highway Patrol in Southern California, backed up by the Marine Corps. And that's related to this post because ____________________???

"PLEASE COOPERATE!"

You can read that as "Please Go Quietly Into The Night".

What bothers me about this is they aren't catching illegal canadians, they are catching people that have entered elsewhere. By a small stretch of the imagination, they could eliminate the '100 mile' rule since a road block in Kansas would yield the same results as a road block in Forks. Its also another small stretch of the imagination that you would be required to provide the information or be detained.

Why is it that conservatives staunchly support the 2nd amendment but are so willing to sell the 4th and 5th down the river?

I like all my 'supposedly' consitutionally protected rights and I will not go quietly into the night. Cooperate? They can expect me to be aggressively disrepectful (i.e. exercise my 1st amendment rights). Arrest me for non cooperation? Go ahead, I am sure I can get free lawyers and 'supposedly' (again) the judical branch of the gubermint is a check and balance against abuses of power by the executive branch.

I'll happily be a test case for the courts.
