Chinook Motel Condemned
The Chinook Motel has been condemned by the City of Port Angeles. The motel was cited with numerous health and safety violations during a June 17th inspection.
I didn’t even know the motel had been open all this time, since it looks empty every time I drive past it.

I wonder what the City wants to build on the Chinook Motel site?
Conveniently condemn the Motel, raze it, then we the taxpayers may get to pay for another white elephant.
I think we should make it an art gallery or the permanent home of the farmers market or a dock for cruise ships or hold city council meetings there.
Edna and Max Mania are going to have a "sprucing up" contest at the Chinook site. Peter Ripley and that Other Guy don't get any brushes or brooms.
Nah.. I think it should be the site for the city's storm water/CSO storage tank. They're condemning the property so they can gain access to that pool out front.
Do you remember when they had "nice rates" on the reader board... only the second "e" had fallen off so for quite awhile they had "nice rats"?
Good times, good times.
I'd heard rumors that it had become a drug den. Don't know if that's accurate or not. But I rarely ever saw cars out there, so I don't understand where else they'd get their money from. Hookers and drugs, oh yeah.
It could be a pretty prime piece of real estate. If the city had done this during the "boom years" the city could have sold it to an investor who might've turned it into a strip mall or something. As it is, I'm afraid it's going to sit empty and become further dilapidated.
Or maybe it can become the new city pool.
*Save The Chinook*
The Save The Chinook Society and joined together with Friends Of The Chinook in order to combine their resources and save this landmark property from the wrecking ball.
We feel The Chinnok Motel symbolises the true spirit of Port Angeles and all that the city represents. We must unite to preserve this treasured property which is also a tourist attraction/destination.
The City will hold a special election in the near future which will create a special tax zone within city limits and a special board to oversee the revenue. It will only cost the taxpayer $50 well, perhaps $100, per year added to their property taxes to maintain The Chinook Motel as it currently is.
We urge the community not to think of themselves (as we certainly don't), but to think of others (that would be us, the ones who will benefit from this) and to Save The Chinook!
I remember driving by once and seeing a crudely lettered sign that said "Pit Bull puppies for sale, Room 5." I thought, well, that figures. Transient housing.
From what I've heard, the Chinook was a great place back in the day, very upscale. Times change.
I wish somebody would buy it and fix it up, make it beautiful again. But it probably won't happen.
I woodn't stai thair. Too stinky for me!
That would be a great test burn for PAFD/FD 2!
Test burn sounds good.
My parents ran the chinook motel from 1965 to 1970. We lived there as well and I worked the front desk at night sleeping there and then going to school in the morning. I was in the 9th grade...I have many memories of this place my dad worked at rayonier mill at the time and loved running the motel with my mother...we took great care of the place and had many repeat customers from all over the world and maintained friends with them for many years.
To the previous poster whose family owned the Chinook - I've heard the same warm nostalgic memories from those who remember Aggie's. Don't know why folks in this century (as opposed to the previous century) can't seem to run businesses ... can't be the hostility directed against them by the "hi we're from the govt & are here to help you" crowd or the "spotted owl first," can it?
I just returned from a few days of my vacation spent in PA. I lived there when I was little and my folks maintained lifelong friendships that took us back for vacations and visits. When it was just my Dad and I we would always stay at the Chinook. This was 1962 to 1969. It was always great. Reasonable prices, clean and was in a great location. We were in PA to fish or visit friends and explore the ONP. The Chinook provided us a place to sleep. Good memories.
I stopped and took a few pictures on the 4th of July, 2012. Sad condition but jogged fond memories of my youth.
