New Stormwater Regulations from Department of Ecology

As you’ve probably read, the State Department of Ecology (under mandate from the federal government) has issued new stormwater regulations which will take effect this coming November. The most talked-about rule is that you won’t be able to wash your car on a hard surface — your driveway, the street, etc. Cars will have to be washed on a permeable surface — a field, or your yard. Or at a car wash.

This is to cut down on the pollution that washes into nearby waterways.

According to the PDN’s online survey today, this isn’t going over too well.

The question is: "Should government be able to tell you where to wash your car on your private property?"

With 777 votes cast so far, the responses are:

No — 82.0%
Yes — 14.8%
Undecided — 3.2%

What say you?

I DON'T THINK SO! I'll wash my car on my own driveway any damn time I please!
Ecology needs to go...too many wackos!! Government seems to have grown WAY too big.

Please tell me you are working on a post about the pay-for-kindergarten article in this morning's paper?!? It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. PS I use car washes and my lawn because my garden hose won't reach the street so I don't care much about the stormwater regulations.

You really shouldn't piss in the gutters. You should piss in the planters, it's good fertalizer.

I only wash my rig once or twice a year, on the lawn, it's the only time it gets water other than rain, it's the sensible thing to do. No rain? It dries up and I don't have to mow it.

Yes, they should be able to tell us how to do some things because so many folks want to be spoiled and don't care about the harm they are doing to the planet.

Actually, they say that car washes are best because they recycle and treat the water they use. I don't know if the ones here do though.

"Can I still urinate in the gutter?"

No. But you can urinate on Olympia's front lawn.

Let me see if I understand this...

Washing your car on the pavement would cause pollutants running into the storm drains, (past a waste-treatment facility??), and eventually into "nearby waterways."

So the solution to this is to wash your car on your lawn, putting pollutants into the soil... which will work their way into "nearby waterways".

It's all part of the circle of life, folks.
