Eighth Street Bridges — Railing Height

Cherie Kidd wants the City Council and the Port Angeles Forward Committee to discuss the height of the railings on the Eighth Street bridges. But before these upcoming meetings, she wants to know what you think.

She wants the Council to decide whether anything should be done to prevent future suicides on the bridges. She said:

“I wanted to dialogue about it because it's a current topic. If the citizens are concerned, we as the council need to address it. I need to bring more definitive information to the council. I want feedback from more people. Replacing the railing would be a huge cost. I'm not proposing that right now. I'm just saying what the needs of the city are. We need to look at this.”

What say you?

In other words, we can have a "dialogue" but nothing is going to get done about the situation.

Too bad Cheri Kidd isn't up for re-election. She needs to go.

Love those nerverending deeply cynical comments from anonymous people in this blogs responses. Though I seldom see things exactly her way, kudos to Cherie Kidd for bring up this difficult topic.

It seems that the best practice in making a jump barrier that doesn't sacrifice the amazing views should exist out there somewhere. How to get to the appropriate technology for the job?

Seems like there could be a high tech chicken-wire fiber netting thingamajig that could be extended out from the underside? Or not, just an image that came to mind.

I've talked to a lot of folks that think if troubled people want to end their lives that it's okay to just let them. In a way that sort of makes sense being as they are usually a problem to society anyway. And it's often society, the taxpayers that are supporting their worthless butts anyway.

But !! They have no business messing with the lives of others while doing so. My point being that maybe the only parts of the bridges that need fencing is the traffic lanes below so they aren't smashing onto vehicles below and messing up someone elses life.

I just don't think they have the right to do that.

Never admit a mistake, just slap some lipstick on it. If Kidd ever made it into national politics she would just be another Sarah Palin, thankfully, she won't.

Via, there are amazing views from the bridges? If you think that you really need a life outside of the city.

Look South, ther is a National Park over there.

Anon, have lived and worked many places around the world, and bicycling across the bridges early the other beautiful morning, the views both S. to the Olympics and N. to the Strait were stunning to me.

Beauty like this--expansive views of mountains and water for all of us--is worth working to keep, I believe.

Other Anon, yeah no, I think that basic humanity compels us to ignore your acquaintances' take on troubled people.

What about Dan "I'll Bring the Farmers Market Downtown" DiGiulio?

Where's the farmers market now, Dan?

Cheri Kidd ran two or three times before she finally got elected. It's just an ego trip for her.

Ummm. Let me think for a nano sec here. Cheri wasn't ON the city council when the decisions were made to re-do the 8th St bridges. She has been a very vocal voice questioning the "behind-the-scenes" dealings of the previous councils that CREATED the problems being talked about, and "Anon" says SHE has to go?

But Karen " I advertise my consulting biz as a door for businesses to city government/contracts" Rogers is okay? Have you seen how many of the city's big projects have her clients as "winning bidders"??? Including the 8th St bridge reconstruction??

If yer gunna start being critical of the council members, let's start with the REAL problems!

Unless..

So we can't be critical of Cheri since one of the "changes" group?

Please.

She hasn't done anything on the City Council other than look cute.

they better hurry and put up higher barriers, or put up a take a number system...because with all the new taxes we're facing (from higher base utility rates to the pool tax, to the other schemes to weasel more money from us) the citizens of Port Angles will be jumping by the masses.
Our fair city is trying to do away with all of us...in a down economy they raise and raise and raise fees. Our utility rates are going up monthly....(the base rate)..until we won't be able to afford to have our light on anymore. Thank you Mr. Cutler.

Anonymous at 10:20 -- This is pretty intriguing information you're talking about. Can you substantiate any of it?

If this is true, we should probably try to do something about it.

aside from torches and pitchforks at city hall....what can we do? Really, now. The city does what the city does. The city council has had a long history of backroom deals and corruption. The city heads have all built job security in their little empires. The town itself still divides itself by lines: old families/newcomers, christian/not, "conservative"?"liberal, etc.
Until we really work as a unit....we're just a mob that can be ignored.

I don't think they can build the railing high enough....
If the economy keeps doing into the dumper at the rate it has and the stupid city keeps trying to find new ways to extort money (new high school, my a**)...the city could sell tickets to jump off the bridges, and make a tidy sum.

I have seen a number of financial reporting documents that were filed to the state by Karen Rogers where she claims income from these contractors.

Visit her website www.karenrogersconsulting.com (I think Tom has a link to her website on the right side of the main page of this website, if I wrote it wrong). There you will see how she advertises her "services" as a bridge between government and business. Pretty easy when you're the mayor, council member, on the Economic Development Council, Secretary of the ( city/publicly funded)Business Incubator, the Port Angeles Business Association and how ever many other "business" related city and quasi-city organizations. Pretty easy way to find "clients", if you know what I mean.

But, exercise care if you want to explore these realities, she likes to threaten people she thinks may be a "problem" for her activities. I've been told by more than one person she has threatened, personally.

Rumor has it she is courting the regional Republicans.
