Chamber of Commerce Saves Dungeness Crab Festival

The Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival almost went under last month. The organization that produces the annual event — Olympic Peninsula Community Celebrations — voted to disband itself.

But now a new nonprofit organization, Olympic Peninsula Celebrations, has formed. This group, in partnership with the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce, will be producing the Crab and Seafood Festival. It’ll be held October 10th and 11th this year at City Pier, Hollywood Beach and the Red Lion parking lot. This year the festival might also use the Gateway pavilion and/or close off one block of Lincoln Street between Front Street and Railroad Avenue.

The Chamber’s board of directors voted last week to help with the management and production of the annual festival.

Yeah, I'm wondering how that closing Lincoln would work with ferry traffic. Would there be advantages to forcing traffic downtown? Would that outweigh the disadvantages of clogging downtown? It would force people to see either Laurel or Oak, and First street, but would they stop if they see something they like, or would they scurry on to the next destination? Would they even see something they like? First has got to be better than Lincoln between Front and First...

Personally, I really think traffic needs to be re-directed in this town to catch tourists, make it more efficient, and reduce these really bad bottlenecks we've been having lately.

Toll gates would be a good idea, make them pay to come here.

You fools just don't get it, you go other places to vacation and spend your money and then want tourists to come here to replace the money you spent there.

Just vacation here and you won't have to put up with outsiders coming here.

Unless of course you think this is a boring vacation destination, and it is for many, it's just a gateway to other places for them.

I do a lot of camping and talking to others from out of the area. Do they spend any time in town shopping? No, they don't, that is not what they are here for.

Most of the things going on in town are supported by those that live here.

Wanna buy a tourist hunting permit? I'm running a special on them this week.

I live here, why would I go pay a high price for a crab when I can just go trap one?

You don't have to vacation to spend money outside of town. Just shop at Walmart! Only a few, very very few cents from that purchase stay in town ...the bulk of it goes back to the company headquarters to rape and pillage another small town somewhere.
Avoid Walmart. Shop local. Avoid any of the big box stores, and big chains...and you'll go far to making this community viable for businesses.
But, I know this falls on deaf ears...how can anyone live without Walmart, MacDonalds, and all the other crap that the TV tells you to buy?!!!
