Tom..

What about this article in todays' PDN? http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/article/20090705/news/307059987

" After the tribe sued Transportation, the agency signed a 2006 settlement agreement under which the city was paid $7.5 million for economic development for jobs lost because of the project's failure, $500,000 to attract and keep businesses, and $480,000 to hire a staff archaeologist -- Beery -- to conduct the survey, write the management plan and monitor waterfront development."

So, PA gets an archaeologist to do a "survey" of the area at $480,000, where he spends two years looking at a couple of maps?

After the taxpayers cough up $90 million to bail out the city/state for trying to push a project on a site that was shown to have an ancient village on maps as far back as 1853??

"..the city was paid $7.5 million for economic development for jobs lost because of the project's failure, $500,000 to attract and keep businesses.." ?

This is not THE headline issue for the area? And, instead you post a clip about "Concerts on the Pier"?

It's your site. Just seems to me that the " $480,000 city archaeologist" clip would be of more "interest".

:O)

Yes I saw that article and it's definitely more Earth-shaking than the Concerts on the Pier schedule.

The few times I've done a post about the Elwha or any other local tribe, I get swamped with hateful racist comments. Since this is supposed to be a forum, that puts me in the position of either censoring people's opinions or being a megaphone for every racist in the county.

So I'm reluctant to do posts about tribal issues. I'm not saying I never will, but the above reason is why I tread lightly on these issues.

I'm a little less curious about the tribe or the archaeologist and a LOT more curious as to what the city will do with that $7.5 million for "economic development".

The cynic within says it'll just all go to the Incubator or to Harborworks and we'll never see anything out of it. But maybe that's just me.

Tom..

Thanks for your explanation. Sorry to hear that you're subjected to those kind of decisions, but I'm not surprised.

I hadn't seen it so much as a "tribal" issue, as more on the continuimg waste of taxpayers' monies and resources. As far as I'm concerned, these sites could contain quicksand, earthquake faults, wetlands or any other of a number of circumstances that would require project proponents to do thorough studies to ascertain IF a site is even suitable for development. Homeowners sue contractors all the time for poor workmanship and faulty engineering issues.

If the city/state knows beforehand that there are "problems" with a site, why waste taxpayers' monies on it? How can we, the taxpayers, allow such "mistakes" by our representatives, without holding them accountable and responsible? They just keep throwing our tax money around to cover for their mistakes and bad decisions!

It continues, in todays' PDN:

http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/article/20090707/news/307079997

"Harbor-Works Public Development Authority board at its Monday meeting approved a 2009 and a 2010 budget, which will include asking the Port of Port Angeles and city of Port Angeles for $500,000 each in additional loans.

Executive Director Jeff Lincoln said he is also anticipating about $200,000 from a Department of Ecology grant."

"We have not heard back for sure, but we have had a very positive response to our submission," he said."

"The total budget is estimated at $736,200 and includes $277,200 for administration, $174,000 for legal, $100,000 for reserves and $185,000 for projects."

Again, most goes for salaries. Who cares if anything actually comes of the efforts?

Cut the crap...you know damn well that if the tribe says anything derogatory about the "white man" that's O.K....but switch it around, and it's called "racist."

only because we pay attention. The reality....yeah, whites are screwed up and we've killed and stolen every bit of land we've ever occupied. We're every bit the white devils that most of the world makes us out to be.
Given that, now we're trying to deny what bastards we are by faux guilt and "oh, be careful of their feelings" which is even more damaging because its condescending.
Maybe we should just expect and accept that Native American's are equals, and admit we did terrible things in the past.
Good game, sorry you lost. Shake hands and move on.
It's not the "indians" doing this to us, it's your fellow wimped out whitey saying "shame for being so insensitive". Wake up.

"It's not the "indians" doing this to us, it's your fellow wimped out whitey...."

Let's remember that the activities that have resulted in the millions of taxpayer monies that keep getting wasted, here in Port Angeles, are NOT being done by the "indians". The "indians" did not create " HarborWorks" (which is asking for more "loans" from the city council totalling $1 million next week). The "indians" did not try to build the Graving Dock on top of one of the largest archaeological sites in the US.

It is the same small group of "civic leaders" that keep finding ways to create all these problems. And, somehow end up being the primary beneficiaries of the outcomes!

Everyone knows there is an ancient village under the Rayonier property. Everyone knows there are lots of laws protecting such sites. But, the "leadership" in Port Angeles has been funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars at "planning" for condos, offices, marinas and a "high end car dealership" on that site. They have hired a number of different specialized law firms with rates of $345 per hour to work on these plans.

Geee, who on the city council is either a real estate agent, is married to a real estate agent, or has close ties to the real estate industry in Port Angeles? Add 'em up!

If their plans go sour, no loss for them, as all the studies, planning, specialized legal fees, clean up costs etc are all being funded by the public. Once "redeveloped", you don't think the state or city will be selling those condos, selling those "high end cars", etc.

But, as we have seen, the city doesn't have money for street repairs, pools, park maintenance, etc.

Get clear about who is causing the problems in Port Angeles. It ain't the "indians".
