No Grocery Worker Strike on the Peninsula, Yet

The possible strike by Safeway, Albertsons and QFC workers won't affect Clallam and Jefferson Counties until December 5th, IF they vote to strike. That's the day the union members' contract expires.

Workers in King, Snohomish and Kitsap counties have already voted to reject the proposed contract. A strike in those counties could begin soon if continuing negotiations aren't successful.

This irrational hatred of unions is really, really disturbing. Unions have done so much good for workers in this country. (And yes, like all systems, and all people, there have been instances of corruption.) Other than jealousy due to the fact that most jobs are not unionized, which leaves most workers alone to deal with bigger and better funded systems, I cannot understand this fury at people who have merely banded together to protect their own economic and safety issues.

Am I missing something, Rachel? What gives with the venom?

Unions are both good and bad. Good because they help raise the wages of those that are non union.

Bad because they always want higher wages and benefits, which of course drives up the cost of everything.

Even Walmart workers should be thankful for unions or they would not be making a penny more than minimum wage.

In a perfect world everyone would be happy with all wages about the same, CEO's wouldn't make much more than the janitors.

But it's not a perfect world, most people are too greedy and always want more.

Most jobs I've had during my working years were non union but I was well aware that their presence helped me make better wages.

Personally, I don't think that this is a good time for ANY unions to be wanting more and striking. They should just be thankful for what they do have and are getting.

Hey, isn't Albertson's a so called employee owned business? So they are union so they can strike against themselves?

This sure is a goofy planet.

I suppose, in a christian country where they would not be needed because christians treat everyone right and pay them so well.

Wait, Walmart is a christian based company and christians are always happy to just have a job at lower wages, never mind.

Maybe I had better smoke a joint and see if I can figure this shit out.

Oh my! I see the Port Angeles Brain Trust has woken up from its' binging to show the world that Port Angeles really IS the center of intelligent thought.

Yes, the time for collective efforts, as unions are based upon, really has "come and gone".

Why band together with a unified voice for the improvement of the collective lot? Why work together to ensure the goals of the group are heard? Why elect a governing group to make sure the groups' concerns are heard? Why donate money to such a group to help get that groups' views heard? As this Port Angeles bright lite has said, the time for such efforts has "come and gone".

And I'm sure they will remember this when they get the appeals for money from the NRA, the Republican National Committee, the Realtors Association, the variations of the Tea Party, the church, and others.

No, the time for working together on common goals and mutual interests has come and gone. America is all about "The Individual", and "Individual Rights". To Hell with anyone else. Why should *I* care??

They can strike if they want, I buy everything I need now in one stop at the new Wal Mart. Saves me gas, and am making less of a carbon footprint.

If anybody wants to know why America is in decline, cannot compete with the rest of the world, and is rapidly becoming an "also ran", come to Port Angeles and see it first hand.

These folks are fighting for the first place in the "race to the bottom". Proudly destroying this country.
