Tourism and Marketing to be Discussed at Chamber of Commerce Luncheon
Tomorrow will be the final luncheon of the year for the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce. Guests will be Barb Maynes, communications director of Olympic National Park; Russ Veenema, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce; and Ryan Malane, marketing vice president of Black Ball Ferry Line.
They will be reviewing tourism and marketing from 2013 and making projections for 2014.

Yes, and the only one that has actually brought new people to Port Angeles are the Black Ball ferry folks.

This is a real town. THE AUTHENTIC NORTHWEST, buddy. We will never be Aspen, or Park City, or Vail, and get tourists like that, that have the money for "clean" whores. You should move to a more touristy city, the type of place that might offer more "inclusive packages", for those just wanting to unwind. But good lucky getting a job waiting tables there, with those scabs. Just sayin'.
There are actually towns and areas on this rock that don't want any damn tourists.
Sad thing is, Anon 4:05 is pretty much right, even if I might not have said it just like that.
I know quite a few people who live in other parts of the country, and in Canada. Virtually every one who has come to Port Angeles has little good to say about it, and have no intentions of coming back.
So, I guess these tourism and marketing people can say anything they want. "The Authentic Northwest", or whatever.

Victoria doesn't boast a National Park in the backyard. I hope the luncheon participants revisit Clallam Transit options for those visitors who choose not to bring their cars to PA. Oh hell, they have plenty of their own beautiful areas over there and no hassle with customs.
There used to be a lot of Canadians come here to drink and party but I don't even see many of them anymore.
I know of two but they live here at least fifty percent of the time.

Actually, if you knew anything about Victoria and Vancouver Island, you would know that comment is not true. The parks may be called "Provincial Parks", instead of "National Parks", but the extensive public transit system can take you to any of the amazing places that attract people from all over the world to Victoria, Vancouver Island, and the beautiful sites too numerous to list here.
This is just reality, and based upon the millions that go there, there, this reality in well understood. Victoria has been deemed a top destination by the travel industry, including Conde Naste, repeatedly. How often has Port Angeles?

What IS there to market here? What IS there to offer visitors? So far as I can see, Port Angeles is merely a place you pass through. No jobs, no culture, no areas of interest - unless you want to watch Nippon pollute the air and water. Other than that, Port Angeles is just like a poorer Aberdeen.

Those who enjoy nature at its most natural, and live near PA, or those who visit the north Olympic Peninsula frequently, we are lucky, and we know it. Small towns are small for a reason. They are out of the way, and lack big city things!
It's like...in Port Angeles, talking about what makes us special, is like talking about politics or religion. Best be careful. Not the best dinner conversation. Sucks.
As long as a tourist doesn't get laid off by a local mill, or get screwed by a local realtor or bank, used car salesman, or a shady appliance dealer or repairman, which is doubtful, odds are they won't get the whore analogy. Tourists don't have their property taxes jacked up, either.
I've had many visitors over the years, and everyone who has visited me, that doesn't mind a small town, and likes nature, LOVES Port Angeles. Please.
Big cities are like heroin. You think you will only "go there" once, but you end up spending the rest of your life there, as time goes by so fast, and you fuck your life up royally, because that's not what you wanted. And you end up with herpes. Oh, the irony.

Yes. Port Angeles IS a "special place", alright!
But, I would venture to say that many live in Port Angeles, not by real choice. They were born here, and can't find work in other towns. Can't sell their homes (we've heard that a lot). Are too lazy to do what it takes to move.
And then there is that crowd that is anti-social, and trying to hide from society in general. You know, the wacko vets hiding out in the woods, and all. Ever run into their places? Scary!
And, the ever shrinking business community that seems to think Port Angeles is "The Center of it All", and don't get out much. And, never seem to figure out how to make things works here.
As is pointed out here, just look at the empty sidewalks, and empty stores to see how well things are.
Clearly the tourist data, which shows most ferry track is TO Victoria. Not to Port Angeles.
So, we can wish it were something other than what it is, or face the reality that Port Aneles is a dive. And, most everyone knows it.

I like sticking my head in the sand as much as the next person. Why face the way things really are? Fantasies are way more fun!
You see observations of why Port Angeles has problems as a "venomous remark". Dismiss and ignore the many people who have come to Port Angeles, tried to help improve things, and left in disgust.
Why listen to those many that see the problems, when you can just say "Love it, or leave it", and help the things that aren't working, continue.
Do you really think that by ignoring the problems that are resulting in businesses closing down, and people moving away, that they will magically get better all by themselves?
Do you think no other town in the Northwest has vistas of trees, trails to walk on, or a waterfront?
After 150 years here, don't you think Port Angeles could/should have something going on, besides businesses continuing to close and move?
I would argue: What a hollow life it must be to be so disengaged from the community you live in that all you can do is stick your head in the sand, and say "All is Wonderful, All is Wonderful" and "Love it or Leave it". And think that is helping.

I see the Olympic National Park is being subjected to budget cuts.They're closing the doors during the holidays.
What else will be cut, as a result of the recent budget agreement? At least we won't have government shutdowns.
The Peninsula Daily News has it in (or out?) for children who live on "hand outs". Why is this, anyone? And what exactly is a "hand out", defined by them? Do we have lots of children here living on hand outs, and if so, why are hands up better?
Seriously, a "hand up"? Is the low dollar amount key? Too much money is demotivating for poor people, and they should feel shame, if they "take" too much, yet rich people respond quite well to more money? Like the executive or football player who doesn't feel they are paid enough?
Hands outreached, bad? If we were to build a statue of Jesus in Port Angeles, would it be bad if his hands were reached out?
BTW, if one hasn't monitored how PA is being trashed on citydata.com lately, using the "crime" and "clicks" angle, now is a good time to check! Yikes! Someone went for the JUGULAR! We keep seeing the PADA struggling year after year to stem the decline of the downtown. Are we supposed to go and cheer up Barb and Russ? Say" Ra Ra, we love that saw blade logo"?
And the PABA? Should we be getting up to attend 7 am meetings on Tuesdays, year after year, to accomplish nothing? Or, perhaps you can list all the great and notable things attending PABA meetings this year has resulted in?

There really is no "why", in the traditional sense. There is a plan, however, and that plan is to make people hate government, hate what government does to help people not like themselves, while they line their pockets with GOVERNMENT MONEY. The more wasteful and stupid (and hateful) the spending is, all the better. If a project runs over budget, perfect. If it has to go back to the drawing board (more studies), it's heaven to them. If a project involves disrespecting your ancestors, that didn't look like their ancestors, and also having different sets of cultural motivators, well, that's probably some filthy twisted sex fantasy thing, at its root. Like Hitler. Sort of a power, control thing. It tends to happen if you can't see your penis anymore, or it's just too tiny to begin with.
And then there are the business leaders/owners, who are quite happy with 0, 1, or 1.5% growth - no new competition for them in the area. While this may sound like a winning proposition, in the long run, and short run, and medium run, it means LESS CUSTOMERS - few jobs, fewer people, fewer people with money!
Compare this dysfunction and rape to the perceptions of Obamacare by a majority of the country. Five minutes of study shows one that a healthier population, that is not burdened with SKYROCKETING health care costs, will lead to a more robust economy, a healthier country and populace all around.
But the teabaggers don't care. One thing they will tell you that the "freedom" has been taken away from insurance companies. It's a new, insane excuse, each day. Insurance is a pool, much like a city or county government. We are not getting what we want from this pool we pay into. We are getting what the bank accounts of the bloated, local teabaggers want. And they are quite the bloated lot, most of them, compared to most small towns.

As if life were so simple.
The dates you reference correspond with the hypocritical regimes of Republicans, who said "cut government spending" to get elected, and then spent money like drunken sailors.
Reagan in the 1980s was LOVED by the defense industries, as he spent billions. Remember "Star Wars"? The "Drugs for weapons" deals for the Contras?
As you will also note, the dates you present are all times when the US government was spending huge amounts on the military. How many billions a month were spent in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the various secret wars?
In the short term, war has always been good for the US economy. This is well documented. But, the huge debt it creates has not been so good for the US economy, hence the "peaks/troughs of recession" you speak of.
And, the world is not the same place it was, then.
The US used to be able to dominate the world. Not so much, now. Think of the current economic powers and interdependence of China, India, Indonesia and the EU, that did not even exist in 1980s.
And, like it or not, believe it or not, the world is facing the severe and life threatening impacts from releasing hundreds of millions of years of stored carbon into the atmosphere over the last 100 years or so. Mass extinctions are under way, now. Ocean acidification is breaking down the ocean's food chains, now. And getting it's getting worse by the minute.
We can pretend it isn't happening, and argue. But, it is continuing, accelerating, regardless.
And with politics and business being what they have become, don't hold your breath that it is going to get any better, any time soon.
