Possible Free Bus Service for Downtown Victoria

The Victoria city government might establish free bus service that would loop around downtown Victoria.  It could be up and running by next summer.  (This article was in today's PDN but is not on their website.)

Free bus service around the downtown area:  would this be feasible for Port Angeles?

Well, it might be, if Port Angeles had anything worth riding around to see, do or visit.

As it is, pretty much any time I go down town, the place is virtually a ghost town. Most times, I can count on one hand the number of people walking around, if there is anybody.

Victoria is a world class city with people coming from all over the world to visit. Most of the people coming through Port Angeles are on their way to Victoria. Even the cruise ship visitors that got off the boat in Port Angeles, got on the ferry to go to Victoria!

Port Angeles has been around for 150 years or so. It isn't as if it hasn't had time to establish itself. In fact, some would argue that it HAS established itself.

And, we live the results.

No.

And where is there to go in downtown Port Angeles?

I mean, really.

Nothing to see, nothing to do.

They'd have to loop around the downtown area for starters. And really, what is there to see that you can't walk to? Plus our bus system is poor, or so they tell us every time they jack up the fares. Pretty soon, poors ain't going to be able to afford riding the bus. And we know the rich people aren't going to start riding the bus.

Lets see, in this little downtown area what would be the point when anyone can walk the few blocks instead of waiting for a bus?

By bus I mean van, hahahahaha

Tom, do you think Victoria is considering that, in order to give the poor, homeless people a warm place to go? Seattle had free service downtown, and they took it away, because it was "abused" by the homeless, mentally ill, and cold. I think that's a wonderful idea! Combine the needs! What would really work here, would be streetcars downtown. Tourists would absolutely love that!

Blanche has an interesting idea, as that is what Port Angeles has become: a dumping place for people with problems.

As Port Angeles has Serenity House and other places for the homeless to take shelter, so does Victoria.

Unlike most other countries in the world, the US built and maintains military bases all around the world. It also has attempted to be the policeman of the world. I heard the other day the US is spending over $7 billion a MONTH in Afghanistan, alone. With what to show for it?

Other countries spend their citizen's tax money on things needed by their citizens, like health care, social services and education.

But, as each Port Angeles resident looks at this month's utility bills, they can reflect on how stupidily their tax money is spent.

Yeah, Port Angeles is too busy figuring out how to create make-work projects for it's friends to think too far ahead. Port Angeles COULD have been a nice place like Victoria, but crony-ism created what we got.

Or, does anybody think Port Angeles has a better economy, or ANYTHING, than Victoria?

crony-ism created a logging town and it was a great place until that went to hell.

Not so sure everyone would agree with you, Billy. Port Angeles' history isn't so pretty.

Our history isn't a hell of a lot removed from any other area. Still, this was a great place in the 60's and 70's.

Depending on your point of view of course.

You think the LEKT, whose relatives remains were used as fill for mill foundations and such, would agree?

Nothing is feasible for Port Angeles. Stupid and corrupt "leadership" assures that nothing will ever succeed in this area.

Victoria downtown is a lot larger than the Port Angeles downtown. One could easily walk across downtown Port Angeles. People don't, they drive to stores down the block, but they could. I don't free shuttles through downtown would make enough of a boost to downtown sales to be worth the cost.

Only thing that would make sense is shuttles from a park and ride. I'm not convinced there's enough people wanting to go downtown to justify that though.

Of course, I have no proof of either of these, just a gut feeling. Perhaps we should hire some outside consultants?

Just spend a bit of time downtown, and anyone can see there are so few people on the sidewalks most of the day.

By comparison, downtown Victoria has people all over the place, most of the daylight hours. Sidewalks are often actually crowded, with locals.

Proof is is to get. Just look!
