Lincoln Theater Closing

The Lincoln Theater in downtown Port Angeles will be closing this Sunday. Brian Cook, general manager of the Wenatchee company that owns and operates the Lincoln Theater, said it would be too expensive to convert from 35mm film to digital projection:

“It's [an] expensive conversion. We just don't think it's justified.  It's been a process for a few years, making this decision.  It's been a tough one.  We've operated it since 1971, and we appreciate the community support of it.”

Convert it to a multi-purpose stage and a much-needed performing arts venue for musicians and other stage performers. That's what happened when the Seattle Theater Group restored the old Neptune Theater in the University District, and it's been very successful.

Just ONE MORE example of how clear it is that PORT ANGELES IS A DYING TOWN.

(If not dead already, that is.)

I travel around the PNW a lot, and I see a lot of little theaters in little towns that have converted to digital. Some have just done it themselves, some have done fundraising campaigns. But they have done it.

However, as we know, NOTHING GETS DONE IN PORT ANGELES. Because Port Angeles itself is DONE.

Speaking of local industries closing down, and communities dying, here is a clip from todays' news:

http://www.pqbnews.com/news/247092381.html

Between the forests dying from Pine Beetles and root rot in the Doug fir, Taylor Shellfish and now this, ya might think somebody would take this stuff seriously.

If farmed shellfish can't survive in these waters, how do you think the wild food chain is going to?

Seriously. This is our very survival. What is it going to take?

HELLO !!!!!

Geez, a mothers love can sure be blind.

I've never been a fan of movie theaters and have only been in it once. You can't pause it to go take a leak or knock off a quicky with the honey or puff on a joint or drink a beer. Not to mention other idiots being distractions.

Today's headline says "98-year-old Port Angeles cinema falls victim to changing movie technology."

No, it's a victim of long-term local apathy. As the article points out, little ol' Port Townsend (with less than half the population of Port Angeles) has two theaters - plus a drive-in. Because people there care.

I was part of a group several years ago that Max Mania put together to try and buy, restore and digitally convert the Lincoln Theater. Paul Cronauer was also involved, and was willing to invest some serious cash if one of the local business associations (PADA or Chamber) also came on board.

But they wouldn't get involved. They didn't see why it would be a good and necessary thing to do.

Now they've driven Max out of town, Paul is dead, and these same idiots will be crying crocodile tears over the "unexpected" loss of the Lincoln Theater.

Screw them, and screw Port Angeles. It's fallen victim to its own stupidity...AGAIN.

It'd make a great multi-use theater... Leave the digital alone and get old movies, second run movies... Do Grindhouse show on some nights... Build a stage so you can mix it with live performances, Rocky Horror, etc. Re-do the seating to allow for food and beverages during performances. These things are tested and work in other communities, but Port Angeles is such an odd duck I honestly don't know if it would work or not. Maybe I'm too cynical, but I doubt it very much.

@ Anon 11:03 Survival? Who cares?

Who needs a so-called food chain? We can grow whatever foods we want.

But the closed movie theater? THAT is something we have to get working on, right now!

This place was a dive. A total dump. In other words, perfect for downtown Port Angeles.

Notice how all the people boo hoo hooing about it closing are recalling seeing movies there in the 50s, 60s and 70s. If they'd been there more recently, they'd know that it was a run down dump.

It was painfully obvious that the owner wasn't putting a single cent into maintenance, so the fact that it's closing now is no surprise. Why fix up an old building in a dying town? He's been making money on it for decades, and now it's a tax write-off. Ka-ching!

And yet another highly visible empty "storefront" in a downtown that is already "rich" with them.

Way to go, PADA! Way to go, Chamber of Commerce! Thank goodness you blew off Cronauer and Mania. If they'd managed to fix the Lincoln up, it would've spoiled the whole rundown downtown theme you've got going.

Uh, Anon 9:06AM, you can't get second run movies anymore, because they're digital too.

Do you REALLY think that anything you suggest is going to happen in Port Angeles? Do you really think anything like that would work in Port Angeles?

Nothing works in Port Angeles.

Well, except Jeff Robb. Kinda.

I certainly wouldn't want to invest money into that business--or any business venture--in Port Angeles. That clarify things for you?

You are on the right track. I've been involved in communities that were controlled by the limited few (define that as you wish), and saw how the same morons kept getting re-elected, cycle after cycle. The local papers were lap dogs to those in control, and no real community conversations were able to take place.

What changed those communities? Just what you've embarked upon. An independent forum where the real players and the problems were exposed. The voters got a few years of education about what was really going on, and the voting patterns changed.

We formed citizens groups, held various campaigns to get the topics in general discussion, and THEN ran a slate of candidates. THEN the voters understood what the issues really were, and voted accordingly.

In each community, we took over City Hall. Fired the crappy staff, put in our own City Attorney, etc.

I visit those communities periodically, to this day. Still great places. The changes stuck.

Port Angeles CAN be different.

I double dare the PDN to do a poll, in the spirit of all the wonderful satirical films and dark comedies shown at the Lincoln over the years, how many times a week do you do meth? LOL

And they could balance that out the next day, by a poll, how many lawnmowers are stolen from your shed each year! HA HA!

And, the next day, how many people from your HS class, overdosed and died! HA! Oh, wait, that's not funny. :(

12:45 AM, February 27, 2014
Anonymous Anonymous said...

@11:22 It CAN happen but it won't. Be safe out there people. The current danger is not your lawnmower disappearing, contrary to what is reported in the paper today, TALK ABOUT A FUCKING SMOKESCREEN, it's your kid dying of an overdose, or your kid dying on 101 being hit by some TWEAKER who can't get cheap or "safe" meth/heroin locally anymore and is flying to Seattle, on a road that virtually 99% of the locals believe should not be patrolled in the manner that most highways are patrolled...so, all this is the fault of the DIRTY FEDS. So, when you lawnmower gets stolen, or your kid dies on some road for no apparent reason, you can blame the feds. Or a raccoon. Yea that's it, was a raccoon.

This town/county isn't just a joke. It isn't just dying. It's dangerous. It's a disservice to pretend otherwise or to pretend that it can change anytime soon.

Tell me! Then I'll pick the next evil person, we can speculate about! Oh, that will make the people want to talk! LOL

Seriously, there aren't enough nice people here with enough free time to even operate a functioning Democratic Party branch. I know, I know, bad example, they are affiliated with the dirty feds.

To each his own, and I'm always suspicious of any charisma, but to me Tim P. (probably stands for "popular") Smith, is the modern day Charles Manson. One glaring difference is Charles Manson probably contributed to less death. And, Charles Manson lived in an area that had some community, was more aware, and possessed the ability/desire to remove scum in a timely fashion. Who had more "sty"le, tossup. Personal taste tho, I prefer grungy over frumpy.

Safeway was just bought out by a private equity firm. Last two times I've been there, an employee was chasing someone out, yelling, "did you pay for that?"

Anyone know if it's rumored to be on the list to close? They are supposedly strong in the west. Who owns Albertsons this week? As food prices FUCKING SOAR (100+ year drought in CA) this summer, along with the inevitable huge increase in fuel prices this summer, I'd guess there is a chance we out here who get mercilessly gouged at every corner, could suddenly end up with no real stores where families can afford to feed themselves, except for Walmart. Soon.

I was down in Cali a few weeks ago. They were flood irrigating the orchards, the rice paddies looked like vast lakes, and the overhead sprinklers were going to beat the band. Yeah, the countryside that wasn't being irrigated looked pretty dry, but the farmers sure didn't seem to be holding back from watering crops, business as usual.

I did notice the Safeways over on Vancouver Island were all sold off a few weeks ago. Was on the TV news.

Hmm. If only PA "capitalists" were polled, would it look worse? YES! OMG, OMG, OMG, gasp, gasp, gasp, sigh...

No wonder the 57% in town is increasingly abandoning the business class in PA. Fuck them. It really doesn't matter. Speaking of, and staying on topic, I'm off to see if Netflix has uploaded any new shit.

Oh, I do have one more point, and this could relate to the Lincoln. Does the bldg. have a basement? Since apples are $5 a pound already in town, regular ol' non-delicious ones, and apples keep so well, esp. in this climate, seems we could start a committee, raise some funds, rent out a basement in town, spend an afternoon, drive around, collect apples, store apples...SO WE WON'T FUCKING STARVE IF ANYONE IS ALIVE HERE IN SUMMER 2015!!

Speaking of signs, I went out to Airport Garden the other day and the still-shabby looking Airport sign was accompanied by a few big piles of debarked logs. Sends a great message, only in Port Angeles are people stupid enough to ship logs by airplane!

Port O Call was a good read tonight, glad to see they're sticking with it.

I agree. Port O Call is really shaking things up around here. Nice to see the REAL news being published, instead of the "everything is fine, fine, fine " drivel that the PDN puts out.

I think one of the biggest problems with the PDN is that they don't dare investigate ANYTHING. They just print what they're told.

I stopped my subscription to the PDN years ago, out of frustration and disgust.

Hope this Port O Call keeps at it.
