Harold Norlund Has Resigned

Harold Norlund, executive vice president of Nippon Paper Industries USA, has resigned from the mill and will be returning to his home in Canada.  A Nippon human resources manager said:

“The company is grateful for Harold's many outstanding contributions during his career at NPIUSA, and his presence will be greatly missed.”

Welcome to the former site of the City of Port Angeles.
Like the Native American villages, the mills, downtown and ultimately the entire town of 19,000+ that once existed along the shoreline here, was dismantled early in the 21 century due to lack of vision, leadership and infighting among elected officials, and a general sense of apathy about the community's future that spread throughout the community in the early 2000's.

There was a big plume of black smoke this evening in the direction of the mill sometime around 4 or 5pm. Somber sendoff for Harold I guess...

Harold probably knows what's coming next for the mill, as decided by the Japanese owners; and it won't be good from the community's point of view.
Harold served a useful purpose in helping fool some people into thinking Nippon is a "local" business that cares about its employees and the community. He helped con the National Park Service into paying Nippon $millions and also building the mill a free new water treatment plant and waste-water outfall. He helped get state and federal grants to subsidize a huge portion of the cost of constructing the biomess plant. He played hard ball with the union workers and screwed them over.
Harold is getting out of town so he doesn't have to face up to what he has enabled a heartless and greedy foreign corporation to do to Port Angeles. Coward.

Or could the guy be moving on to another job back in his home country as stated?

I'm sure everything is just fine, fine, fine. Howard is just moving along, like you should.

Port Angeles is in GREAT shape, things are going great. Everything is just great!

Oh, and yes, I saw that black smoke coming from the plant yesterday, too. Must be the paint burning off all those new parts they put in over the last week.

No new parts for old boiler #8 which had the black smoke at 5:00 pm yesterday, so much for that theory. Maybe a paper machine went down and the operator had to scramble to get the boiler combustion back under control - you know, something that happens at paper mills. But it's more fun to talk trash from a position of inexperience and without knowledge of the operation.

I thought that Boiler #8 was supposed to be decommissioned when the biomess cogeneration facility came on line? Not so?
The black smoke could mean that #8 was burning oil (probably really low grade oil) at first in order to get the operation hot enough to be able to later burn soggy hog fuel.
We may not know all of the particulars (or should I say particulates?) but we do know enough to beware of the pollution emanating from the mill, whatever the source. The stinking, polluting mill has been destroying the quality of life in Port Angeles for far too long. Heck, even Norland wouldn't live anywhere near it. He had the resources to acquire property in Sequim. But many forced to live under the toxic plume don't enjoy that luxury, and literally have to suck it up every day.

Logging is picking up? I met a man from Montana yesterday that came here for work. He said that work pays better here.

Harold will be missed. He proved to be a leader, a professional, and a gentleman.
He deserves to be thanked for his efforts helping keep (at least some) family wage jobs in Port Angeles.
Best of luck to him at his new job and best to him and his family!

Boilers #9 and #10 burn oil when equipment needs to be held on warm standby, not #8. But the oil-burning myth is as good as any to spread around.

I'm under the plume when the wind blows from that direction and look forward to the new boiler reducing emissions when it is fully functional and #8 can be taken out of service. It's like trading an Edsel for a Prius.

I think it is interesting that Harold decided to move to Port Albernie, BC. This town, more isolated than Port Angeles, has been called and voted the "Worst Town in Canada" for years in a row.

So, makes me wonder. The "Worst Town in Canada" is a better place to move to, than staying in Port Angeles?

A New Yorker may find a small town hell on earth, but others seek out the end of the road spots. It's a gift to be content and have the ability to nurture interests instead of stewing in malcontent.

It seems there's quite a difference of opinion as to whether Harold Norland is a gentleman or a scoundrel, and whether his departure should be celebrated or mourned.
The most successful con artists and scoundrels are ones who fool their victims by masquerading as sheep when, underneath, they are really sharp-fanged predators.
So maybe the old saying about a "wolf in sheep's clothing" helps explain things.

I would like the end of the road spot a lot more if there wasn't so many others here, especially the money mongers.

Or Mr. Norland has a unique skill set that he can utilize in small towns with paper mills and earn a handsome living doing so - nothing more, nothing less.

As they say "The truth will out".

And, if people want to be conned, and feel good about it, that sure is their right. Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

People can speculate today, but tomorrow the truth will make itself known, or the next day.

As the population of Port Angeles dwindles, as people get fed up and leave, there will always be those who say what a nice day it is.

And it is.

WHAT a surprise that Spink was in the area, stealing dogs, and FUCKING WEARING his own dog's collar, when he answered the door. WHAT a surprise that we didn't know about this, and WHAT a surprise that he's in Federal custody.

And WHAT a surprise that the PDN is trying to smear the new prosecutor. Unfuckingbelievable.

WHAT a shitty area. That goes for you too, Jeff. Co.
