It appears that some outdoors lover was here for a day or two and decided everything was cool here, including Cafe New Day that I only went into once.
This is another one of those "fluff" pieces that towns like, and that company makes money from.
One of the cited qualities that makes Port Angeles so "cool", in their minds: "Mussel harvesting"??
Yeah, sure." Port Angeles: Mussel harvesting Mecca of the Pacific Northwest".
Note, like the other "award" Port Angeles got for being among the top 5 "Best Small City in America", these so-called awards are generated by branding comanies. Here, they describe themselves; " A travel and lifestyle brand redefining travel media."
This means they are little more than an advertising company creating a "brand" for a community to help it promote itself. The "Top 5" company was another of the same, where a town can pay to get itself listed in some award or another.
Self promotion can be okay. But, as we have see in Port Angeles over and over, it can backfire.
People from afar read these fluff pieces, and think they are real. They call ahead, and book a hotel for an few days. They come with their skis, surfboards and mussel harvesting equipment, already to enjoy the wild beauty the ads promise.
They quickly see the reality of Port Angeles, and leave early. They are angered because they rightfully feel they were mislead.
I know this because I've talked to any number of hotel, restaurant and visitor serving business owners over the last 10 or more years.
If Port Angeles wants to attract tourists, it should first make the place attractive. You know, like clean your house before you invite a lot of people over. Clean up your property before you put the "For Sale" sign up.
People who return home from a bad experience will tell everyone they know about it. That is not wise advertising.
How about the ads featuring "Washington's Playground"?

No oil tankers in those pictures.
How cool is that?
Oh look, Port Angeles is getting more ahhhrrt. More ahhhrrrttt! Who cares what a joke! This town is an ugly pile of you know what! Art so what? Who cares the vacant store or the junk shops or the chinese restarants? The homeless shelter closed and Port Angeles is wasting money on art for nobody instead of helpign people! Shame on them!
Oh, I guess this town is okay for most visitors, but they don't have to live here.
Stopped in Chelan two years ago, was going to spend the night there but only stayed about two hours. It's gotten too damn crowded the last ten years.
