Navy's Assault on Olympic Peninsula gets Daily Kos Coverage

We're hittin' the Big Time.  Check it out:  Navy War Games over Olympic National Park and Forest.

Hopefully Daily Kos will be just the first of many national news/environmental sites to cover this story.

Amazing what Port Angeles gets news coverage about.

Crazy guy bulldozes neighbors house. Father brands children like cattle, and kids approve.

Navy uses national park as weapons testing range.

Yeah, Port Angeles. Nothing like it.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Yet another blow to the haggard, shit-stained Hell that is Port Angeles. Oooh! Daily Kos has a dinky web article about it! Gosh, I'll bet the Navy is REALLY worried about that. Enjoy that lack of quality of life, suckers. Good luck with selling your property now. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

On a related topic, perhaps you noticed that Council Member Cherie Kidd, who is running for re-election, asked the City Council for unanimous support in her quest to get funding for putting up "suicide prevention fences" on the 8th Street bridges.

In today's PDN, we see a quote from Council member Lee Whetham, who (coincidentally) is also running again. "Whetham, noting that Clallam County alternates between having the first- and second-highest overall deaths by suicide of any county in Washington state, said the bridges attract those who are thinking about doing themselves harm."

Sounds dramatic, and certainly would inspire support for the requested actions. But is it true? Does anybody fact check these types of statements, before they are acted upon?

A quick search reveals a fundamental flaw in accepting as fact what Council member Lee Whetham says.

Clallam County does not rank " between having the first- and second-highest overall deaths by suicide of any county in Washington state..."

The county with the highest rate, and by a wide margin, is Skamania at 36 per 100,00 people, followed by Pacific county at 28. Okanogan county comes in third at 25, Stevens and Asotin are fourth and fifth at 24 each.

Clallam ranks 6th in " overall deaths by suicide of any county in Washington state..."

But, why be accurate? Here is another example of how the city misrepresents reality in order to get funding support for ill conceived projects.

And, this is certainly not the first time the city and it's representatives have said untrue things to the public in order to get support for what they want to do.

Not the first time the Peninsula Daily News has just dutifully parroted what the city wants to say, without question.

No wonder this city is in such bad shape.

@ Anon 10:42

I looked at that suicide site. 51% of suicides by guns? 22% by suffocation? What do they mean by that? 19% by poisoning?

And jumping is 4%?

If that city council person is so concerned about people offing themselves, why are they going so round about, and talking about one of the least common ways people do it?

Why not put time, money, efforts and publicity on ways to help people thinking about offing themselves? Why not concern for all suicides, instead of just the bridges?

Is this all really just to get re-elected?

I'm looking for the day when some headline tells what is really goiong on in this town : "Government's Assault on Olympic Peninsula gets Daily Kos Coverage".

Who needs to worry about the Navy ruining Port Angeles and surrounds when you have the local bozos doing such a fine job of it?
