Gateway Groundbreaking Ceremony
The Gateway groundbreaking ceremony was right on schedule this morning at 9 a.m. About fifty people attended. Speeches were given by Mayor Karen Rogers, City Manager Mark Madsen and Kevin Thompson, President of the Downtown Association, among others. The event was also attended by:
Members of Clallam Transit, Primo Construction, several former Port Angeles mayors, members of the City Council, Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Association; and representatives from the offices of Norm Dicks and Patty Murray.
According to the City of Port Angeles website, the construction chaos won't start getting worse until around mid-August. Their website will continue to provide updated information on Gateway. This site also has photos of the groundbreaking ceremony.

Thanks for the info, do you know when the bridge closure is to begin? Traffic will be detoured thru the downtown area.I have lived in tourist destinations before, and heavy traffic in downtown can be a good thing for the area, however, we have the trucks to contend with and that may end up being a deterrent.
I found this link on the City of Port Angeles website. This is all I know so I hope it's accurate.
They're supposed to start demolishing the Tumwater Bridge in late July. They'll start demolishing the Valley Street Bridge after they're through with the demolition of the Tumwater Bridge. There's supposed to be an open house for questions and answers sometime after July 4th.
Keep it real, Port Angeles! Shout outs to my peeps including Fab Freddie, Miss J and D-Fraction. Word up, Port Angeles! Peace out.
I hope this construction doesn't screw things up for downtown stores. I guess the city has to do what they have to do, but I hope downtown can survive this "interesting" 18 months coming up.
Maybe this is a done deal, but talk about bass-ackwards. Putting a giant transit mall right smack in the middle of everything, and moving the farmers market out to the outskirts. Backwards, I tell you.
Ahh... yes, for those of us who had a bit of a wager on whether "remains" would be found. It's payday!
