Recall Drive Against Forks Mayor
I haven’t been following the political situation in Forks at all, other than glimpsing at some of the PDN headlines. I have no opinion for or against Mayor Nedra Reed, or whether she should be recalled or not.
But, the Forks City Council has voted to pay the costs of fighting the recall, if enough petition signatures are collected to require an election. The Forks City Council seems to be awfully generous with their constituents’ money.
The people who are pushing for the recall are paying for it themselves. The people against the recall are getting help from local taxpayers.
Is this right?

No doubt the Port Angeles city council would do the same thing. They love to throw our money around. Bubble buildings, high-tech swimming pools, higher taxes for a shrinking school district, a $14 million bus stop, the fun never ends.
Governments are the same wherever you go. Federal, state, local -- what happened to of the people, by the people, for the people? Or maybe it never existed.
They are not paying the costs for the election they are paying the costs for the hearings preceding the petition where a judge must decide if the charges are sufficient. From what I understand the city council decided to pay it because this is a required part of the procedure and the mayor is not paid anything (completely voluntary basis) so anyone who merely disliked the mayor could file a recall and eventually run them out of office based on legal costs alone (as opposed to reasonable recall efforts.) From the meeting that is what I understood their intention to be.
Politicians aren't in it for the money. They want something more intoxicating: Power. The Port Angeles mayor and city council aren't paid much, but they just love flexing their muscles and throwing their weight around. Because they can.
It probably isn't any different in Forks or any other local government.
