PenPly Gets $85,000 Grant

Clallam County approved an $85,000 grant from its Opportunity Fund. This will enable the Port of Port Angeles to upgrade the facilities of Peninsula Plywood.

It still isn’t known when the mill will begin hiring. The company is legally bound to hire sixty people before the end of the year.

PenPly (formerly KPly) is expected to ultimately create as many as 175 jobs.

I wish them the best. Sure is a bad time to be starting up that kind of business, though.

I had all forgot they were trying to start operating again. I guess they must see something in the news and markets I don't cuz I sure don't see much of a market for the product.

But maybe someone overseas would like to have it, I don't know.

I know that I admire their optimism and rose colored glasses even if it buries them. Never mind that I think it's stupid to try to run that mill at this time, but hey, it's not my money.

I sure wouldn't invest my money in something like that right now.

I wish them well, but I can't see where their market is going to be. I just don't think it is sustainable.

Maybe Jackson and Andrew can propose another "Welcome to Port Angeles" sign to be put down there, on Marine Drive.

Or, Edna can be Co-Chair of the "Marine Drive Beautification Project". They could paint the buildings down there baby poo colors, so all the new employes have a nice environment to go to work to.

Maybe the Port has an "Opportunity Fund" grant to funnel money to them for that.

They have no market and they can hire up to 175 people one day and lay off all but ten people the next. It sounds nice and it looks good on the front page of the PDN, but resource extraction is going the way of the dinosaur ... into extinction.

We'd be better off investing in the Green Economy which produces local jobs and creates a local income which is spent locally. Fortunately we have people on the City Council now who understand that the Green Economy is the way of the future and will begin working towards that goal.

Now we need to get remaining dead-enders off the City Council ... Karen Rogers and Don Perry!

Oh, yeah, Port Angeles is the regional hot bed of environmentalism! Those treehuggers really control things in Port Angeles.

If only...

We can see by the state of the US economy what the "free market" will do, and how "sustainable" it's focus is. NOT!

Given an opportunity to plunder the economy, to rob pensioners of their savings, pollute communities and drag out clean ups, we have ample examples of how "responsible" and "sustainable" Corporate America can be.

Hey tree-hugger...your schtick is getting old. Many, many are getting tired of losing jobs over your latest imagined enviro-calamity.

Hey "anonymous"...The "Green Economy" will never create enough jobs nor be jobs that will support a family. With the recent revelation of manipulated "global-warming" data by so-called "scientists," the populace is beginning to wake up to what radical environmentalism is all about: A bunch of hypocrites that drive old POS oil-leaking, belching-pollutant cars, live in houses (instead of caves, where they should be if they followed their own dogma) and use paper.
Get a life.

I just returned from the Thanksgiving dinner at the Catholic church.

Talked to a lady that reads your blog and she didn't even hit me, ha ha ha.

Well, she's known me for years and is okay with me.

Hey, I'm sort of a tree hugger, if half of you will get hungry and leave town we'll have room for more trees here. :-)

Rex, I don't mean to sound impolite, but you really need to sober up before you start posting here. It is embarrassing to see you represent yourself with crap like this. I'm sure you feel the same way, when you sober up and read the illogical things you're writing while stoned.

Now, most every person on the planet that in not in a coma understands that the "free market" system and the coporations with the most power and influence in this country (and others) knowingly trashed their beloved USA, which resulted in millions losing their homes and jobs. Some are calling it "The Recession". You might have heard of it. ;O)

You think the "tree huggers" are responsible for this?

Here on the Olympic Peninsula, (and throughout much of the rest of the world) fishing is all but a memory. We go out fishing, but there are virtually no fish to catch.

You think the "tree huggers" are responsible for this?

Maybe you are sober enough to remember a year or so ago, when the Wall Street commodities speculators bid up the price of a barrel of oil to around $150 a barrel. Travel, tourism, the airlines, auto companies and many other companies suffered severe losses, people burned through their incomes to pay for fuel, and people were laid off.

You think the "tree huggers" were responsible for this?

For the sake of, well, a lot of things, I'll stop here. This list can be much longer.

Do you know the definition of "knee-jerk reactionary"?

LOL! Yes, I can already imagine your response.

Ummm.. Karen Rogers IS off the City Council. She did not run for re-election.

We COULD speculate as to WHY she did not run again. Her best buddy, Larry Williams sure didn't flinch at running for three terms. And, with Port Angeles being is such GREAT shape after 8 years of her leadership, what a wonderful track record to run a campaign on!

Rex is just into his "conseravtive" victimology pity party. Oh, those evil tree huggers! Oh, those evil unions! Oh, those evil Socialists!

He's got to blame someone else in order to justify his continued ignorance.

He, and far too many others look to ANYTHING.. anything said by anybody.. that might support their continued UNSUSTAINABLE lifestyle in the face of overwhelming evidence that the consumer lifstyle actually DOES have consequences.

Funny how that works. Efforts by "treehuggers", unions, "liberals" and anyone else who voices concerns about the future that is being jeopardized by the greedy actions of some.. are charaterized as being negative by the conservatives. As Rex said," Many, many are getting tired of losing jobs over your latest imagined enviro-calamity". Being concerned for your childrens' future equates to a bad thing, worthy of insults and ridicule by the conservatives.

But when their own cronies plunder the USA (and other countries), these same folks develop a form of blindness. Year after year, we see how these Wall Streeters come up with one scam (the first round of the " Savings and Loan Scandles", and then Enron for example), then others ( the recent " Mortgage Derivitives" and the subsequent billion dollar taxpayer bailouts of the financial and auto industries ) that transfer huge sums of money out of most peoples' accounts.. into those of a select few. But these same people who are so quick to blame the "treehuggers" for job losses stay silent as the country is repeatedly plundered by the coporate folks!

The common denominator here is that they all want material wealth at any cost. They don't care about the cost to others, or to the future of the country, or the planet. As long as they can keep living in the manner to which they have grown accustomed.

Yes, and the other thing I notice with self described conservatives is the anger and arrogance they voice. With rare exception, their mode is all about blame, finger pointing and self rightous accusations.

One of my chief complaints with Fox "news" is just that. Most all their programming is that same angry, accusitory, self righteous ranting. Now, most know it is intended to manipulate voters to a particular point of view, and to some extent, I don't care. I COULD wish that they would be honest enough to say that, themselves. Instead of calling it "news", call it " partisan political viewpoints".

But my real concern is how it is creating such a high level of polarization in the US. As far as I have seen, Fox "news" comes with all basic cable and satellite TV packages in the US, beamed into most households across the country. You get it, whether you want it or not. (Interestingly, it does not come in TV packages in Canada, but CNN does. Is it because Rupert Murdock knows Canadians can't vote in the US?)

It is seemingly creating this angry, accusitory, self righteous language for political discussion as the "norm". " I'm right, and you're a liberal idiot.." And, shouting down the guests on the shows with ridicule and insults if they pose ANY kind of opposing views.

Hardly a means for moving America forward during these difficult, transition times.

I know, the republican party has devolved into finger pointing, perpetual victimhood, reliance on short-term memory only and quick dismissal of anything they disagree with. It's flashy talking points designed to sell books and ad space on Fox, not to engage thought or push for rational debate.

I miss the old time conservatives... the ones who could argue persuasively about their beliefs. Frankly, I'd love some rational debate on the democrat's health care bill. Instead we get pictures of Obama with a Hitler mustache drawn him, and the argument that a public health care option is the exact same as a concentration camp. Sure it's a flashy visual and can get the base riled up, but it also drives people away and marginalizes the republicans further.

I believe this country was founded on debate, that our founding fathers sat down and worked towards a common goal using rational thought. Fortunately there's still some conservatives out there who can formulate a reasonable argument towards health care, who engages the opposition instead of yells at them. But you have to really dig through the vitriol of the republican party to find them.

"LOL...Rex is still here! To the disdain of liberals everywhere!"

Disdain? Why? Kids stamp their feet and yell, but that doesn't mean they get what they want, or that they are right.

Rex, in the real world, no one really cares about the neocon rantings. It may make you feel better somehow, and I guess that is good, but even you must realize it is pretty hard to get folks to work with you on projects when you insult them at every chance.

With the emerging economic powers that be China and India, representing two thirds of the worlds' population, I'm not so sure the US's interests are best served by arrogance and insults.

But, it looks like you think you have a better idea?!

Did someone say, "free market"? Taxpayers are subsidizing Kply/Pen Ply to the tune of --
$85,000 "opportunity grant" from the City of PA,
$51,000 "energy rebate" from the city of PA,
$250,000 from Gov Gregoire
