Wal-Mart Downsizing

Even though the Port Angeles Wal-Mart is in the process of expanding to a larger store, they're downsizing some of their employees at the same time.

This hasn't been publicized in the local papers, but if you know anyone who works at Wal-Mart, they'll probably verify it.

Does this make sense?

I'd like it better if, instead of "downsizing", they just folded up and went away.
I hate that corporation. I refuse to shop there. The thing is a plague on retail in America.
So, they're going to have half the staff for twice the store...good, hope the shoplifters get a good haul.
Bah!

I'm not currently rubbing bellies with any of the gals at Wal-Mart so I can't help you with that.

Considering how long the old Kmart plaza stayed more or less idle I'm more interested in what is going to happen to the current Wal-Mart store once they move across the street.

I don't think it's likely that the PUD is going to expand that much more after buying the old Costco.

But I suppose that the city will again push for the city limits to be out that far so they can get everything in between in their tax base, and have more to lord over.

We won't think much of that over here at Polly's Honky Tonk Saloon and Whorehouse. We don't much like our taxes going up so they can do more stupid things with the money.

Hmmm. I am not understanding how they could man a much larger store with fewer people than the smaller store. Wait and see how they manage it, I guess. If they can't take care of the customers adequately, that will not be good for business, thats for sure.

Anonymous @ 8:12 PM. Just because I'm not currently rubbing bellies with any of them it doesn't mean that some of our friends don't depend on Wal-Fart for an income.

I don't have an answer but I admire the problem. I'll keep shopping there, everything is made in China anyway so I may as well buy it as cheap as I can get it.

Actually, the camcorder I just bought was made in Vietnam. In case no one has noticed American corporations have most things made in other countries these days while flying American flags over their headquarters.

Interesting shit....

Last I heard they were hiring additional employees for the new store. But before that they were going to shuffle some of their current employees over to the new store. Maybe that's the downsize? I don't know.

They've been downsizing for awhile now, actually. I know a couple of people who work there and they say it's absolutely dire for those who are left. I'm sure there will be some additional hires once the new bigger store is open (Fall, at the earliest, and why it would be on schedule I don't know -- nothing else is) but for now, people are losing their livelihoods and their benefits.

Shame on Wal-Mart, they come in and take over, then they pull some stupid sh** like this.

Anyone who shops at Wal-Mart is stabbing their community through the heart. They are also stabbing their own country in the back.

China makes a majority of what Wal-Mart sells. China will lock you up for your political or religious beliefs, then force you to work as slave labor - to make exports for Wal-Mart.

I am very willing to take the time to check where things are made before buying, and to pay a little more for things made in the U.S. (or at least in another country that doesn't disregard human rights). I want manufacturing jobs here, not in China.

Think about it people: You shop at Wal-Mart to (SUPPOSEDLY) save a few pennies. This causes locally owned businesses to falter and fail. This, in turn, causes our local economy to falter and fail. And if enough of that were to happen, guess what? Wal-Mart, having no loyalty to any community, would just pull out.

Leaving you nothing.

Boycott Wal-Mart. Support local businesses. Keep local dollars ciruclating within the community.

I don't think that Wal Mart is any more evil than most other companies. But there is room for them to improve.

There's plenty of businesses in town owned by the locals that don't provide much if any benefits to their employee's because they want fancier homes and better toys.

Yeah, shop locally so they can have nicer homes. Hey, Wal Mart is as local as most any business in this town, it's not like anyone is driving 30 miles to one.

Like it or not it's becoming a global world and that isn't going to change. The kinks just have to be worked out.

My lotto ticket didn’t hit the big one so there goes my dream of remote acreage.
*sigh*

For example, I know a man that worked for a local business man for twenty-seven years. With no benefits and not that good of wages. Yet this man lived a very good lifestyle in a fancy home and has nice toys.

Because of his trade he couldn’t switch jobs cuz there was no one else to work for and he’s a home grown boy and didn’t want to leave town. To his credit the man did give him a lot of equipment and materials when he retired and went out of business so he could set up his own shop and he is doing much better and making more money now than he did in 27 years.

I’m just saying don’t turn a blind eye to the fact that a lot of local business people don’t treat their employees all that well while they have very nice lives.

"I’m just saying don’t turn a blind eye to the fact that a lot of local business people don’t treat their employees all that well while they have very nice lives."

Word.

Worst part is, if you work for Company X and they treat you like crap, it's not like there's a Company Y or Z that would be better for you... There's almost no competition here just more of the same. So employers can keep wages really low, lower than cost of living, low enough that everyone has problem making ends meet. Employers don't have that problem, they run out and buy expensive cars, houses, whatever. It's their money, they can spend it how they like, but I wish they'd stop whining about how no one is shopping at all these overpriced stores because of Walmart or the liberals or whatever. Maybe if they treat their employees with some respect...

Hey, at least we pretend that we don't. It depends on how far out there the beliefs are though. This country does a pretty good job of trying to honor everyone's religions and that is a real sore point with me being as I think they are all stupid and causing too many problems while trying to honor them all.

Hey Watcher...your comments are asinine.
Go to Swain's...all their goods are made in China as well.
Why bad-mouth WalMart, just as BBC sez, at least their crap made in China is cheaper than the exact same crap made in China sold at Swains! Or Sunset, or Hartnagels...on & on.
And what is this "shop local" or "support local business" stuff? Where do you think WalMart employees live - and shop? Those employees spend money in the LOCAL area...and maybe in your so-called "local" businesses! Besides, WalMart is an AMERICAN company...and they actually pour more money into local charity than any business in town.
We won't see goods manufactured in the USA on a large scale again until: 1. Environmental regs are reduced or eliminated. Many factories cannot operate under current regulatory climate because they might "pollute" too much!
...and 2., speaking of profit, the UNIONS must go...they have forced many companies overseas in search of cheaper labor. If the stockholders (you & me) don't see a profit, the company is el-foldo, thus they go overseas to operate.
Wise up.

Mary Lou...How naive and out of date you are. Get rid of environmental regulations, eh? So we can hopefully have five or ten polluted sites like Rayonier instead of one? Hey, that would be progress!

Unions are very much a good thing. We should be trying to raise wages and standards of living UP, not racing to the bottom. Do you really, really want the U.S. to be in competition with Third World workers for every job? Because, if so, we'll lose out every time. (Because I somehow don't think you'd be willing to work for 30 cents an hour.)

Common sense and basic economic theory will tell you that if you RAISE the standard of living of workers (at home or abroad) you create more opportunities, more sales - not less.

Wal-Mart is NOT a business that gives a shit about our local economy, period. If we don't make corporate headquarters enough money, they will pull out. But before that they will have pulled out a LOT of our local dollars.

And I'd be curious to know how you "know" how much Wal-Mart gives to charities. (WHich is a big write off for them, of course...)

you're getting ripped off, you're helping to undermine American small towns all across the country. You are aiding a corporation who scoffs at American laws, breaks labor laws, cheats employees, doesn't pay living wages (encourages people to seek out state medical services, even hands out forms on how to get food stamps in some communities), doesn't treat employees well, and doesn't pay but a fraction of the taxes (based on income) that you or I, or some small business would pay.
Go to Walmart, further destroy America. Seriously. Is it really worth saving a few cents on junk made in China?!!!

I don't go to Walmart. I don't go to Swain's. I can't stand spending my money on garbage that won't last, and looks cheap and crummy to begin with.
But, from the looks of garage sales around here, and how people dress.....evidently it's trailer trash fashion to shop at Walmart.
It really is undermining America and our economy. But, you guys wont' listen..it's all about YOU and defending your poor taste and poor choices.
We'll be par with Mexico soon, and I'm sure you'll all enjoy it then. Wait. The economy is going to slightly bounce, and then we're all in for the WORST depression of all history.
Why? Because there are no small businesses (Walmart has screwed the pooch with their rape and pillage style). Governments are taxing the hell out of small businesses, while not taxing big ones -- and the only hope for an economic recovery is going to be small businesses, feeding back into small towns all over the country. Until the behemoth falls victim (Walmart and the other mega cororations) we're not going to start seeing a recovery.
It is true. Study economics...and the picture is as clear as the nose on your face.

Environmental regulations are by and large for the protection of public health. Polluting industries that do not clean up, just shift the cost to the surrounding population in the form of illness and deaths.
What Rayonier did to the people living above their site, esp. Gales Addition, is shameful. That not very many people in the community stood up for those people against Rayonier is pretty bad too.
The state health dept was so concerned about the status of childrens' health in PA they scrounged through their budget to conduct a study. The health status of children in PA was equal to a town in Georgia that was full of chemical manufacturers. In other words - not good.
People attacked the health department.

The fact is that Wal-Mart supports the community. It pays large amounts of property taxes, even larger sales taxes, employs a couple of hundred of our fellow citizens and does support local charitable organizations. Yes, most profits go "out of town", unlike many of their "local" competitors. Do they bring "value" to our community? We all define "value" according to our own set of standards and those who can't much afford to pay for higher quality, appreciate the value they receive at Wal-Mart, decent products at low prices. Those of us who can afford to pay more for what we buy, should shop where we feel we get the best value, according to our set of standards and quit being so darned judgemental of everybody else.

Take men's clothes. I won't buy from Walmart because it's my experience their clothes don't last, but unless I want some Carhartts workclothes, I'm not going to Swain's either. Sequim Penny's is either too old or too young for me. Costco's okay, but limited. I usually have to go off Peninsula for that. Note the phrase "have to". once burned,
how much do you really NEED. We're a nation addicted to shopping..and we need to STOP.
You really NEED that dozen pack of poly/cotton white tube socks? Couldn't you get buy with half that in all cotton, better made (usa made) socks? What about 3 pair of a really GREAT all wool sock?
Sure, you need to wash them more, and/or wash your feet now and then, but who really needs a dozen pair of socks? Walmart feeds into that "greed need".
It's like that for everything. Do we really need a house full of resin nick-nacks, or to "redo the designer theme" of a room...every few seasons? Do we now? Do we really?
The problem with stores that have cheap shit, is it encourages you to waste your money on cheap shit. I think we all have closets full of cheap clothing, drawers stuff to the brim with too many socks, and a house full of junk that is doomed to be landfill.
When did America get so into 'cheap cheap cheap'. Reminds me of the joke..."that restaurant serves horrid, awful food" to which her friend replies "and the portions are so small..."
Walmart pays a fraction of the taxes that other stores pay..they had a sewer system run out to them...(hint, who paid for this?)
They employ PART TIME employees...and, refuse to allow unionization. Those employees rely on state welfare for health, for food stamps, and to make ends meet (children's services, free lunch program, etc). So, you're PAYING for those low prices -- on the back end, through sales taxes, property taxes, and all employers with their B&O taxes.
Would we be better off if we didn't have Walmart....you bet. We'd have more small business, and more employees working over a more diverse background. Look what town was like before Walmart, before Kmart. Look at the higher number of jobs per capita that Port Townsend has. You are foolish to think that Walmart has any benefits...other than filling your sock drawer with cheap socks that wear out twice as fast as quality socks.

Not so fast there "Thinking"...Walmart pays good competitive wages, no less than other businesses pay to start out since most hardware/retail in town also pay only minimum wage. I know folks at Walmart who make well above minimum; my friend makes $17+ per hour, she has worked there since it opened. She also gets full medical and dental. All the full-time employees get the same coverage as those who work at Swains or other comparable stores. So stop the mis-information.
I'll buy what I want, we have the freedom in this country to do that. Your tone leads me to believe you are a minimalist...well, you go ahead and live like a peasant, I'll buy as much as I want, and re-do my decor too.
Hey! You just reminded me, I need new patio furniture, and Home Depot has a nice set. I bought a set last year, but I don't like it, so it's gonna be garage-sold. I like those resin animals for my garden too. I have garage sales often, I buy cheap crap at Walmart and Swains, then turn around and re-sell it for more money!
I love Walmart, can't wait till it opens. I'm SO excited, the grand opening is gonna be awesome! It'll be nice to shop for groceries and everything I need in one place. Saves gas and the planet!

With over $400 billion in sales and about 2.1 million employees, Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer and private employer, and number three globally in the 2009 Fortune 500 rankings behind Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon.
They have been infamous for their treatment of disabled (those injured while working), forcing people to work when sick (or lose their jobs), their part-time workers, low pay, and questionable other practices which have come under court scrutiny (cameras in the bathroom and dressing rooms, their employment "matrix", sex discrimination, health and safety violations). They are thugs, pure and simple.
We all pay a high price for the "low price retail monster"
Okay walmart shoppers...just for shits and grins...watch the movie, then report back with what you think:

http://www.walmartmovie.com/

The film shows Wal-Mart doing what it does best: making huge profits while keeping its workers in poverty, driving small businesses into bankruptcy, exploiting workers in poor countries, and disregarding the environment. Wal-Mart’s strategy is based on ruthlessly cutting costs, allowing it to undersell its competitors and earn enormous profits.

All I want to see is people wake up...and realize that we are killing America by buying Chinese.

And, $17 an hour..is a "good wage". You are shitting me. You must be kidding. No, it's not. It's crap wages for the number of hours and the really awful "benefits" they provide. Get a clue. The average wage in America for supervisory staff (retail) is well over $25 an hour.
Walmart has you brainwashed, dearie.
I am sick of seeing America ruined by the big ugly stores. All our money is going to the Walton Family and to China. No wonder Port Angeles is turning into a third rate town, below the poverty line, and with sliding education scores. Wake up, people.

Walmart Fires Cancer Patient for Legally Using Medical Marijuana
Joseph Casias, 29, has an inoperable brain tumor. Last November, Walmart fired him after 5 years on the job because he tested positive for (legal) marijuana.
March 14, 2010 |

Joseph Casias, 29, has sinus cancer and an inoperable brain tumor.

Despite his condition, he has dutifully gone to work every day for the last five years at a Walmart in Battle Creek, Michigan, where in 2008 he was named Associate of the Year.

Casias is also a legal medical marijuana patient under Michigan state law. He uses marijuana with the recommendation of his doctor to relieve the effects of cancer.

But Walmart, the world’s largest public corporation, has no sympathy for his condition or regard for Michigan’s state law. Last November,Walmart fired Casias because he tested positive for marijuana during a routine drug screening.

Here’s what a Walmart spokesman had to say:

“In states, such as Michigan, where prescriptions for marijuana can be obtained, an employer can still enforce a policy that requires termination of employment following a positive drug screen. We believe our policy complies with the law and we support decisions based on the policy.”

To add insult to injury, Walmart is now challenging Casias’ eligibility for unemployment.

Federal law prohibits the use of Marijuana. Only some states allow the use of medical Marijuana, you cannot expect a corporation based in multiple states to have conflicting policies from state to state.

Walmart did nothing wrong.

State unemployment taxes are so ridiculously high that corporations have to fight unemployment claims, if an employee violates the corporate drug policy they do not qualify for state unemployment.

For that matter, all state and federal benefit recipients, including unemployment, welfare, food stamps, social security, medicare, obama-care et. al. should be subject to mandatory drug testing.

ya-vol! Nothing like goose stepping to defend the capitalist monster.
I'm sorry, but if a long time employee, suffering from cancer and using pot to keep up their appetite (so they can keep up the strength to keep working)....I think the rules should be made to bend with the situation.
This "zero tolerance" stuff is one step away from Nazi Germany. Wait until they're coming to take away your benefits for some slight. GEEZUS, buddy...get a grip on humanity.

This is reminding me of my village and of particular headman of this same village named Abdul Atmahwallahad or, as we knew him, Abdul of the Many Goats.

This same Abdul proclaimed that all who wished to buy or sell the goat within the confines of our village must buy or sell by him. As headman he was able to do this, you see. And such was the meaness of his nature that he would buy buy cheaply and sell dearly therefore.

Thus, all were reduced to the level of beggars and much discontent was voiced among the people of the village against this rapacious pirate of the goat trade. Such was the misery of the common people that one day it was discovered that some chappy had severed the head of Abdul Atmawallahad from his self same body. Ai yo, what rejoicing from the people therefore as though liberated from the yoke of bondage!

Now I have never yet found a goat at this Wal Mart, yet if I did and they behaved in such a way as old Abdul I would say take this as a lesson, therefore and mend your naughty ways.

Wishing you many good lucks,

Gitanjali Attawalahai

Anonymous Said...And, $17 an hour..is a "good wage". You are shitting me. You must be kidding. No, it's not. It's crap wages for the number of hours and the really awful "benefits" they provide. Get a clue. The average wage in America for supervisory staff (retail) is well over $25 an hour.

WOW!! I don't even make $17 an hour, close but not there yet!! I don't know one 'retail' business in this town, Seattle for that matter that makes $17 an hour for a starting wage, let alone a few years down the road.

I was against Walmart for many years, because they drove Kmart out, just like they do in every city. But when you live in a small town, you have to shop where its available.

None of the 'local stores except Swains are open late, so if I want to shop local I have to take off work or go to swains or walmart after work.

When Kmart opened up, everyone was worried about the small business that would close because of it. I don't think they closed because of Kmart or will because of Walmart. If our county and city would get off the pot and find a way to get some larger business in our area to employ more people, all the retail stores would profit.

Since according to Anonymous I am poverty stricken I can't afford anything but Walmart anyway...if that.

If every Walmart in the world would fold up, go away and never open again, it would be so much better for the economy everywhere. What people don't get to see are the tax cuts they get, the benefits of not paying for this and that, and don't pay their employees enough to be self sustaining. They cheat their way through to save money for them. Their so called save you money, actually is costing America our schools, our health care programs, better foods for hospitals, nursing homes, etc. Look it up, people. I totally hate walmart and will not buy there! Recently, I paid 3 times for an item, because I hate them that much! Check out the internet, you will see how they cheat to improve their own life style, they don't give a hoot about their employees, the community they sell to, or anything but their own fat wallets.
