Zuiderdam Passengers Enjoy Port Angeles

Well, most of them did anyway. One visitor from Calgary said she saw “a dying town.” But nobody else seemed to have that impression. I’m guessing she thinks any place that doesn’t have thousands of new residents pouring in — and some of the buildings are more than six months old — is a “dying” town.

Of the ten merchants contacted by the Peninsula Daily News, most of them reported an increase in sales yesterday. The downtown streets looked almost as crowded as Halloween (as one merchant noted).

Let’s hope next Saturday’s visit from the Statendam is successful as well.

I wish the business association members would take the Coho to Victoria - and take photos of their harbor from the ship. They should then pay attention to the building and facilities that visitors go through to enter Canada.

Then they should return to PA and take photos of the PA harbor. They should pay attention to the facilities people must go through to enter this country.
Then - they should compare and contrast the two ports.
Victoria has made every effort to make their port attractive, inviting and impart the message that visitors are welcome and they are proud of their city.
We can learn from Victoria.

The ferry terminal in Port Angeles looks like the last stop before the concetration camps.

A rare and noteworthy sighting: I saw Barb outside of her office, putting up balloons.

I think that Edna’s business motto is – THERE’S A SUCKER BORN EVERY MINUTE – And she proves it everyday selling mostly foreign made items for four times what they are worth. Conclusion, there must be a lot of suckers on those ships.

As for actual spending figures I’m sure that they will shortly be coming up with impressive sounding numbers. I admire how they can crunch them but I’m damn sure not going to recommend putting them in charge of our banks.

As for those saying that they would return, they always say that but go somewhere else the next time. “Port Angles? Na, been there, done that.”

We can learn from Victoria.

Sure, we can put some hookers on the streets and pick up the night life. I’m willing to spend my money on an American product but I don’t know any American made hookers. Mostly because I don’t go to the part of town where they may be hanging out and none have sent me an email offering me her services. I guess my contribution wouldn’t help much though, she’d just spent it on foreign made things or Canadian pot. It’d put a smile on my face though. :-)

The entire waterfront area/Railroad Ave. is slated for a huge makeover in the next couple of years. The City has already sent out the RFPs (Requests For Proposals) for the job.

Please, no artwork from Mr. Stokes along the new waterfront/Railroad Avenue area. Please.

OH NO! Do NOT let the city do the "makeover". Plus, most of the land that is vacant is owned by ONE landowner, and unless the old guy drops dead sometime soon, he'll want an arm-and-a-leg for someone to develop it.
The city did a TERRIBLE job with the monolith Gateway -- it's poorly designed for the multiple use that it's trying to do.
The city has a public works director who thinks in terms of "battle ship" motif and engineer sensibilities.
Whatever the "rethinking" the city would do would end up being an eye sore and impossible for merchants, or customers to navigate. Look at the LANDING if you want to see an poorly planned eyesore.

A makeover for the waterfront? Requests for Proposals?

How about forget that and reduce our property taxes already instead. I am tired of footing the bill for the City of PA to squander it!

There's a section in the city's SDAT application to the American Institute of Architects proposing a design for an overhaul of Railroad. Lindberg & Smith designed it, and it's pretty nice. An information center where the pink house used to be, a better trailhead and expansion of the Olympic Discovery Trail, a complete revamp of Oak and Railroad, viewpoints and parks along the waterfront. I don't know about the pedestrian bridge, but maybe someday. :)

If you want to check it out it's at:

http://www.aia.org/about/initiatives/AIAS075426

Of course, who knows what they'll actually wind up using. I'm trying not to be cynical about it.

Translation: No one here smart enough to figure out what they want.

If they had any brains, and I'm not accusing them of that, they would pick up on the Native American theme of the Heritage Center, and the oldest culture and history in the area and work it for all it was worth.

It is my humble opinion that it's currently the best looking building in town, other than the fact that they painted the canoe black.

P.A. nerd...While I appreciate your desire not to be cynical...I have to say that, personally, I wouldn't let Charlie Smith design even a single park bench for me. He's the guiding hand behind our new "Browntown Downtown" color scheme, AND is way too tight with the (know nothing, see nothing, do nothing) PADA crowd. Charlie's nice enough, but I don't think he's very creative.

As for the Gateway...Part of what delayed and diluted the whole process was the meddling of, yes, the PADA. Without their "help," that project might well have been done faster and cheaper, and ended up being more functional than it is. (And mind you, the PADA didn't actually contribute a single dollar to the cost of the Gateway.)

The PADA doesn't contribute a fucking thing money wise to anything. They just want to tell everyone else how they should do things.

Feel free to go to one of their meetings and tell them that they helped create this mess.

BBC -- Unfortunately, when a citizen goes to a PADA meeting, s/he is politely (or not so politely) ignored. They make it clear that outside input is NOT welcome.

I've tried, and I am done trying to help.

Lindberg & Smith!!
Yes aside from the new THEME downtown of 70's babyshit brown and gosh awful ugly, golds, blues, and purples -- the buildings that THAT duo design are rooted in the late 70's! Have either of them come up with a new thought since siding that is at 45 degree angles, and trapazoid windows? You can tell their designs a mile away -- and honestly, they look DATED. I'm not impressed.
Get out your leisure suits and miniskirts folks -- we're going to "update" the town to the 70's. Oh Wow, man. Groovy.

From the era of big 'fros and foxy hos, the PADA proudly presents Funky Port Angeles!

An all star cast heads this fun filled laff riot of everyone's favorite decade. Featuring:

"Foxy" Barb Fredrick

"Super Fly" Bob Stokes

Max "Tenspeed" Mania

Charlie "Shaft" Smith

and you'll be feelin' the love, baby, as Richard Stephens lip synchs to the greatest hits of Barry White!

Beige! Polyester! Platform shoes! Elephant bellbottoms! More beige! Inflation, stagflation and malaise!

If you go to a PABA meeting and are not a high paid consultant they don't think you have anything to offer.

Hire a consultant – Go wrong with confidence.

Now there's a scary thought. And we finally got rid of that fugly '70s grill plating above Rick's Cafe too.

I'd rather it be Lindberg & Smith than, say, Exceltech. Hard to say if it'd go to them now that certain people are off the city council.

On the other hand, half of me kind of wants the design to go to Frank Gehry, just to piss people off. ;) Something bold and unusual would attract attention to this town, that's for sure.

why is it the PDN hasn't covered the guy who branded his kids, but its all over the Seattle Times and KIRO and KOMO?
But, we get the crappy articles that are more fitting for a third rate magazine, and then THIS nonsense about Zuiderdam passengers, without any real tally of how much business was increased or what kinds of businesses were visited.
Pathetic. Our town could really USE a real newspaper.

Does it really matter? All you would get were some impressive figures, not a true profit and loss statement.

let them come and gawk at the parents who think it's their god given right to brand their children. It's going to be like a visit to a third world country....come one come all, come see how we mutilate our children.
