Port Angeles School Board: Layoffs, Pay Cuts

The Port Angeles School Board will eliminate the equivalent of 5.3 teaching positions, and reduce teachers' pay by about 3 percent. All of the teacher positions will be eliminated through attrition; no layoffs will be necessary.

Among para-educators, there will be reduced hours for many of them, and one layoff. And there will be some cuts to special education programs.

The Board was able to save elementary school music and middle school sports programs that had been on the chopping block.

What I want to know is what the administrator is getting paid.

I wrote about all that about 20 years ago, I'm not going there again.

They're just over paid idiots, I have gotten a damn good education on my own over the years, including some college.

And I'm not the first person to drop out of high school, or as some say....

I never let school get in the way of my education. A hell of a lot of so called schooling these days is way overrated. Pushed on you by over paid idiots so they can justify their sorry ass existence.

Where I came from I was known as the best automatic transmission and front end alignment man in the area and how did I learn to get so good?

Shit like that interested me so I taught myself. To make a living all you have to do is find something that interests you and dig in and learn it and you'll always find employment.

Most things worth learning are free, you don't have to pay others to learn them or go to school to learn them, you just have to buckle down and learn them on your own.

Of course I'm not discounting some schooling, got a whole frigging folder of diplomas myself. When I was a young idiot I displayed them on the wall, now I'm not even sure where they are.

Smokey Yunick, ever heard of him? High school drop out but became an idol to millions of men around my age. If you want to read about a damn interesting man read, THE BEST DAMN GARAGE IN TOWN. ISBN # 0-9724378-3-5

It's a damn good book about his life. In fact my last post on my doings blog was a book report about him and his book.

Crap, if it will stop raining today I'll put new front brakes on my truck.

Carb killer, no, I certainly do not advocate closing our schools. All young people need a good sound basic education but they are doing a lot of stupid stuff in schools anymore, and getting paid to much for doing it.

And as I understand it there are no PE classes anymore so we're ending up with a bunch of stupid fat kids in this country.

I'm generalizing of course, all schools churn out some damn smart kids also. This of course has never changed, but it used to be a lot cheaper to get it done.

There is the root cause of the problem

Unions and government control are part of the problem, I sure can't argue against that statement.

And banks anymore are a pain to deal with, I went into mine looking for a property loan today and they expect me to put a home on it.

I don't want property to put a home on, just a shop I can use to work on some inventions, and I don't like others like bankers telling me what I have to do with something I buy. No wonder this country is going to hell.

Man, I gotta pay closer attention to my spelling, I said Carb killer, hahaha.

Well pal, according to my dictionary 'gotten' is a verb. :-)

Besides, I've never pretended to be a wordsmith, I think that English is just pretty much a piece of crap, but it's the only piece of crap I know how to use, somewhat.

If you're an English teacher, 'git' a life. Git is an interesting use of a word, if you're a Brit it means, "A person who is deemed to be despicable or contemptible."

Brits use a completely different English than we do.

Capitalist...If you're going to post something critical of education...You might want to make sure you're using proper grammar and punctuation.

Otherwise...Sigh...You're just a sadly easy target.

Not to mention a sterling example of the need for more education, not less.

And I'm all for educating yourself on your own, but, really, that doesn't usually cut it in say, oh, a job interview. Most employers will choose the person with the actual education over the person who's "taught themself." I'm not saying that's always the right or smart choice, but that's the reality.

Grammar and punctuation, Watcher?

Get a grip, English and how we use it is always changing, we make up words and slang faster than we can learn it all.

And we often make honest mistakes in the use of the proper words in our hurry to say things. And misspell words.

I say that if you understand someone to just let go trying to be the English police.

Everyone makes mistakes, including you. And I'll put my fucking commas where I want to, they're my fucking commas. :-)

Have you been paying ANY attention to what is going on at the P.A. School District? The cut list shows them eliminating one more Assistant Superintendent (they had 3 of them 2 years ago, now only 1 will be left) cut the Director of Special Education, 2 admin secretaries and 50% of their travel budget. All Administrators had their salaries frozen last year, and now a 40% reduction in their number. Teachers took a 3% cut in pay, but only because they now don't have to work those 6 extra days. Stop passing on the same old tired song.

The unions and the guv e ment…right. Public school educators are easily the most under compensated professional group in the country. When was the last time teachers in the PA school district went on strike for wages? DUH.

My main concern is that the citizens of PA are already at the saturation point for property taxes. After bailing out the pool, thanks to the actoins of a corrupt and incompetent City Council, along with the totally unnecessary levy for the OMC, it looks to me like our kids are (as usual) at the back of the line for funding.

Kind of conflicted about this. Good for them for saving money, but I can't help but think this is a bandaid solution with the hope of returning to business as normal after the economy recovers.

Thing is, we're not in 2006 anymore, let alone 1983. Even if the economy recovers to 2006 levels, schools look to be the next bubble: way too costly for the service they provide. And even if the education bubble doesn't burst, P.A. schools are bleeding students like crazy, has a high drop-out rate, and the graduates who make it through can't wait to get out of town and into an area they can make some money.

The cuts do nothing to address this. And you know the admin is sitting back waiting until they can float some new levies. More tech! More buildings! Think of the children! The current solutions are just reactionary to the crisis at hand.

I'd rather they be revolutionary. Times have changed. Information is everywhere; the world has shrunk considerably; old institutions have been rattled. I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem like schools are keeping up even with the kids. A kid can whip out a cell phone and get more information than the teacher is talking about, right there in the class (or they could use it to text their friends about boys or girls, but you know what I mean...)

It's time to re-think old paradigms. Is the entire structure of education valid anymore? Is it light and nimble enough to cater to a large, fragmented society and a rapidly changing marketplace? I don't think so. Since the district is in trouble, why not introduce some radical thinking to education. Play around with things a bit. Try something different. I'm afraid it's going to happen sooner or later. Might as well be on the way down. That's the way the private sector would do it anyway.

A solid basic education is very important for all kids to get. Reading, writing, math, home ec, shop, shit like I was taught in schools back in the good old days. Not to mention, PE.

My main concern these days is over paid employees, over fancy and over priced schools.

I understand that everyone wants to make more money but damn, it has to have a ceiling. What administrators and principles and such nuts at the top make these days really bothers me.

And just how much in wages is a second grade teacher worth? Face it, it's not like they are having to teach much of anything deep at that level.

Hell, I could teach at the second or third grade level, I dare say that any of us could. It's not exactly rocket science and therefore not worth high wages. In my humble opinion.

If teachers are paid so poorly, according to them, why do I know a couple of them that go on a nice vacation to South America every summer?

I don't know, but I suspect that private schools manage to operate on less funds. Not that I advocate going that way with the whole education system, I'm fine with a government ran education system, as long as it's ran properly, like in my day.

Well,if it gets fixed it's the youth that will have to fix it, it's clear that us old fucks can't.

Doofus (aka Annon 6:51pm)
Gotten is a word. It's used frequently in American English.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/gotten

A past participle of get.

gotten [ˈgɒtən]
vb US
1. (Linguistics / Phonetics & Phonology) a past participle of get
have gotten (not usually in the infinitive)
a. to have obtained he had gotten a car for his 21st birthday
b. to have become I've gotten sick of your constant bickering

It isn't used in BRITISH English, but it is used, and acceptable in AMERICAN English. Please, understand, the languages are NOT the same.

The past participle gotten is never used in modern BrE, which generally uses got, except in old expressions such as ill-gotten gains. According to the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, "The form gotten is not used in British English but is very common in North American English, though even there it is often regarded as non-standard." In AmE, gotten emphasizes the action of acquiring and got tends to indicate simple possession (for example, Have you gotten it? versus Have you got it?). Gotten is also typically used in AmE as the past participle for phrasal verbs using get, such as get off, get on, get into, get up, and get around: If you hadn't gotten up so late, you might not have gotten into this mess. Interestingly, AmE, but not BrE, has forgot as a less common alternative to forgotten for the past participle of forget.

Perhaps, you've GOTTEN it, by now?

Well, Big Hoss, your diatribe was ultimately ruined by your last sentence and your using commas where you didn't need them.

The corrected sentence should read:

"Perhaps you've GOTTEN it by now?"

You get a C+.

No, the comma's were for effect.
Comma's in American English can be for dramatic pause, and especially so in online conversations.
But, obviously, you don't understand such things. Nuances may NOT be your strong point. And, you are wrong.
Brush up on your English.
Most mild interjections are treated as parenthetical elements and set off from the rest of the sentence with a comma or set of commas

Uh, you mean like teaching a kid to read?

“Hell, I could teach at the second or third grade level, I dare say that any of us could.”

Really? So how would you identify a kid with a learning disability? How would you deal with it? Remember now Ace, you also have thirty other seven and eight year olds to deal with at the same time. (not to mention their parents, your boss, and a lawsuit if you fuck it up) I’d also love you views on classroom management , and preparation for state testing, and I’m sure you have any number of wise observations on how to integrate your lesson plan with the rest of the school, district state, and federal plans. Kids ain’t transmissions, Bub. Stick to whatcha know.

“I'm fine with a government ran education system, as long as it's ran properly, like in my day.”

This sentence pretty well speaks for itself.

“What I want to know is what the administrator is getting paid. “

You and me both, brother. MidManagement is where ideas, money and intelligence go to die.
It’s also what’s killing the educational system and the US economy in general.

JezusShaves..... Get over yourself and your brainwashing. Every damn parent on this rock that has a kid that isn't doing well wants special attention for the little house ape.

That gets pretty damn expensive for the taxpayers. If you want to know that a taxpayer looks like look in a mirror.

Not all kids are going to get all that smart, I don't care how much money you spend at trying to make them smarter.

Hell, if they were all so fucking smart and worth so much a Frosty at Wendy's would cost 20 bucks.

Recently while visiting other blogs I’ve noticed more comments in Chinese or Japanese. Stuff occurs to me, just jumps into my head when I’m pondering on other things. Those comments when translated often don’t make much sense, and as often as not, not related to the post at all.

That got me to thinking, are these comments left there because they are some kind of code for terrorists to go read? I don’t know, just had the thought is all. Not that it makes much difference I guess if you see the big picture as I do.

We fuss about local problems but they are no different than the problems in any location in the country, while the bigger picture (world wide) shows things going to hell faster and faster because we’ve over populated the planet, and adding our destructive ways and environmental disasters to the ones nature has always provided us with is likely more than she can cope with.

Result : Mankind is stupid and created his own end times, we’re screwed.

Conclusion : Not much point in trying to figure out how to make the youth smarter in education programs, it’s likely that in twenty years the best skill they will have is knowing how to hunt as they try to survive. Survival of the fittest is how it will go, it’s always been that way.

I hope that if pockets of humanity survives they are a lot wiser than we are now, we’re smart enough education wise, but wise we are not.

gave up on the public school system and home schooled my kids. They never missed it, are socialized (the big concern people have "oh your kids won't be socialized") I believe the concern is that my kids won't be bullied, beaten, or robbed my fellow students. They also won't be bored to tears by a teacher clocking in physically, but not really "there". They won't get the overly simplified, dumbed down text books. They won't have to spend a whole year studying for one stupid test (to help the teachers get more raises, or the school admins to get a bonus from the state).
Nope. My kids can study -- learn at their pace, read books the school board wouldn't approve of, watch movies, go to museums, have science experiments, get a solid foundation in math and English, and not cost the tax payers a cent.
Funny, but my kids have all gotten high SAT scores. They aren't into drugs, or drinking, or wanton sex. They enjoy college, and excel. And, as a benefit to all of you: they wear their pants at their waist, and can actually hold down a job!

why would they learn how to use comma's and the apostrophe when all the letter board signs in Port Angeles can't get it right. We've had Frugals say "Your what we need" in congratulating PenPly back. The fireplace shop out on the highway east of town proudly had "For your valentines". On a regular basis about half the signs in town are misspelled, or are inaccurate (grammar, context, punctuation).
Likewise, our own beloved newspaper can't put comma's where they belong in headlines, and regularly have headlines that make no sense, or are insane. They run articles that need editing by a 3rd grade teacher. Typo's aside..there are always other issues. "pure bread" dogs, "spayded" "chawawa" and "dotson" (for breeds). Craigslist might be the worst offender. (One person, recently, complained in the rants and raves section that something was wrong with the computer because there were red squiggly lines under most of her words. S/he wondered what that meant.)
