Sprint Boat Race Track Gets Clearance

The Army Corps of Engineers has given clearance to the investors who want to build a sprint boat racing course in Port Angeles. Their next step is to apply for a permit from the city.

The group of investors is called the Dan Morrison Group. They purchased the South Fairchild Industrial Park, 113 acres, from the Port of Port Angeles in 2008. When the course is built, there will be two sprint boat races per year. Each race is expected to draw 5,000 people. According to Dan Morrison, this should pump $500,000 into the local economy with each race.

Hopefully this redneck nightmare will never make it through the permiting process.

I feel sorry for the neighbors.
Noise; air pollution; traffic.

My only concern is the water used being as water on this rock is likely what the future wars will be about.

But Rick has seen some and say's that they are pretty wild and fun. Redneck? I suppose, but I guess I have some Redneck in me, doesn't everyone?

That wouldn't be me, I live on the East side of town. :-)

But I may go to one to see what all the shits and giggles are about.

We don't need the noise and other associated impacts this would make. Water is a critical resource and to squander it on this? No Thank you!

All this worry about how the neighbors will be affected, but not a single sole steps up to oppose all the "government bashers" who loudly claim that the City and the County permitting departments are THE reason that the local economy isn't growing! Sheesh!

Well, this IS a redneck town, despite what some people think. Go for it!

This WAS a redneck town. The environmentalists and artists and Democrats and those generally of a progressive outlook are winning elections and setting the agenda more than ever before. And having to deal with the messes, economic and otherwise, left behind by those rednecks who used to be in charge.

Um, could they have races like that in the bay where the water already is being as those monkeys downtown like things going on there anyway?

Redneck: A poor White person in the southern United States.

I have an issue with the dictionary description of a redneck, but they did give you Nascar and good booze.

Yeah. Cuz who would expect noise and associated impacts around an airport industrial park.

Lissen up all you pablum-puking arty, "progressive" Terrerist-loving types that currently think y'all run this town. Ya don't run this town, hear? Time for the truth: you people want to tax and spend the successful folks out of business and bring in a bunch of homeless bums to vote for you at election time. We ain't taking it any more. Just wait till November when y'all get tossed out of office and then we run you out of town on a rail!

Uh huh. So who are the biggest employers in Port Angeles, besides the government? Walmart and the Hospital. Even after a long crash, logging, mill work, blue collar fabrication and fishing still carry a lot of jobs here. I'm always seeing cleaning and landscape trucks around town, that's pretty blue collar right there. Lots of folks here listen to country and southern rock. Even though we've gone blue last couple elections, there's still a huge conservative contingent up here.

Sorry to shatter illusions, but Port Angeles is not going to become this gentrified upper-middle class paradise anytime soon. Rednecks are going to be around for a long, long time. I don't call myself a redneck (don't even know what a spring boat is, to be honest), but I know there's still enough of them up here to realize we need to find a way to co-exist.

Yes, any event that involves racing is redneck and a nightmare. Moron.

Regardless of PA being a blue collar town, more events are a GOOD thing. The greater Seattle area seems to benefit from SeaFair.

This problem with this town is that it's cynical, jaded, un-supportive, (bordering on hostile) of pretty much everything.

This sour attitude is what's killing the town.

Labels are stupid cuz it's hard to nail things down but you can put me down as a tree hugging redneck. I have to honor all that is in me and some of that includes crazy shit.

The problem isn't so much what we do, the problem is over population and too many doing everything.

Lordy, you Libs won't let us brand our young 'uns, race our sprint boats, cut down trees or nuttin'. What next? Y'all gonna outlaw pork rinds and PBRs?!

Yes, because a boat race is exactly the same thing as branding children.

Two observations.

One: Seattle is designed to handle the traffic associated with SeaFair - an activity that takes place along their waterfront which is designed for such high numbers of people. The area proposed for the sprint boat races has neither the roads nor any other infrastructure to handle the numbers of people the backers envision.

Two: Yes, overpopulation is the thing that's driving all our problems. And it's the one topic we as a species will probably never, ever address.

Gee, no wonder Rayonier is shaking in it's corporate boots! I see a lot of Confederate flags flying from trucks in this town, so don't think artists, enviros, Dems or progressives have suddenly become the collective big Dawg in the kennel we call Port Angeles!

Sprint boat races = redneck nightmare

The smug Liberal hypocrisy and stereotyping on display in this thread is so typical of the self righteous, we-know-better-than-you Leftists. So much for the Liberals "tolerance"!

The town is near bankrupt because of the Leftists anti-business policies and then they turn their noses up at an event which would bring income to the town. Unlike the transvestite convention, the sprint boat races could actually benefit the town and the down town businesses.

Maybe you'd like it better if we held a tree hugging contest or a sushi making event or a great big group hug followed by a parade of busybody Leftists through down town singing "Kumbayah"?

Stop trying to turn the town into a hippie commune, Berkely, Massachusetts or some other Liberal Taxation Uber Alles Utopia.

Kaj Ahlburg, thank you for your well reasoned editorial against the NOLA levy which ran in today's PDN. We simply can't afford another tax hike, especially families that are already having difficulties making ends meet.

I hope the bleeding heart taxers will put their money, that is their own money not the taxpayer's, where their mouths are and join you contributing to the NOLA if the levy fails.

You are a true leader, Mr. Ahlburg, and I salute your commitment to our community which so despeerately needs practical, level-headed leadership.

Hippies like to pay taxes? Hell, hippies are liberals that like for everyone else to pay the taxes.

From what I understand, downtown businesses do pretty well with the transvestite convention.

I think this town is big enough for both with some granola-munching hikers and screaming Twihard girls thrown in for good measure.

All of these bring bucks to Port Angeles. No sense in frightening them away.

The comment about traffic is one of the better ones on this thread. Yes, that would be a concern. Hopefully someone's looked into that. But, this is Port Angeles. Maybe Exceltech looked into it for a price.

Yes, I am SO impressed with Kaj Ahlburg. Here he is, as a Board Member of the infamous HarborWorks, funded with $1.3 million of taxpayers funds, telling us about how taxpayers are over taxed!

Yeah, While HarborWorks lobbies everyone they can think of to get the Dept of Ecology to spend another $4 million on the private property of Rayonier, Kaj writes to discourage support of the public library system. Whatta guy!

These guys just make me sad to be an American. And even more sad to be a resident in Clallam County.

As a buisness owner in this area I am excited for anything that will bring people to our area. Redneck or not. Events like these generate revenue, for me and for all of you.If you think this wont go through the permit process, please go look at the mid budget report and see the shortfall of revenue for the city in lodging, gas and sales taxes. You better hope it passes or the shortfall of revenue from taxes will keep coming out or our pockets and not the out of towners who will come to this event.
As far as water usage we could devert the water from watering the grass downtown, and with a nice westerly wind waters front street only.
As far as rednecks and water consumption they probably use less than anyone who has posted water issues on this blog. Accept for the occasional above ground pool. I bet everyone who posted about water has a nice green lawn at this time.

Thas rite. We proud rednecks of Clallam county don't need to use much water. No need to water the weeds out front, an' we sure ain't gunna wash those junkers out front! (Maybe the rains will help rust 'em into the ground 'fore we gotta worry 'bout 'em.)

ACCEPT the reality that some of us rednecks don't need no water EXCEPT for the rare occasion our truck radiators needs sum.

Sigh..
