$900,000 Projected Deficit for 2012

The City of Port Angeles is expecting to be $900,000 in the red next year. City Manager Kent Myers said:

“We're being faced with an increase in costs without the ability to finance that with additional revenue.”

City Finance Director Yvonne Ziomkowski said $600,000 of the deficit is the result of increased personnel costs. Another factor is the expected loss of sales tax revenue when Price Ford Lincoln moves to a new location outside the city limits.

OMG! What a shocker! You mean, in this day and age, governments have deficits? Governments have reduced revenue streams? How could the city council possibly foreseen this?

Was talking with a PenPly employee last night. They told me two shifts of workers were laid off last week, and that they believe PenPly will shut down in three weeks.

Will be interesting to see if what they had to say comes to pass.

Were the lay-offs reported in the PDN, or does that paper only report "Happy News"?

Typical PA! Move while the going is good. The streets here are in worse space than any community in Western Washington. The people here are the most unfriendly of any town I have ever lived. This loser community has no vision, no infra-structure like a railroad or a 4-lane highway to bring any industry or jobs into the area. Glad you didn't have any foresight PA pioneers...with the exception of natural beauty, you all failed!

how can the city be so myopic? Of course there is a deficit. We have hundreds of homes vacant, and a very, very high unemployment rate. Meanwhile, the city hires another consultant, and decides to upgrade the sound system, and other silly purchases. Their solution: raise the utility rates, raise the property taxes, raise the fees. Idiots. The more they tax us, and whittle into our meager incomes, the less we'll spend in the city, and the LESS viable it will be.
City is run by a pack of jackasses.

If Pen Ply goes down, I assume that the nearly half million dollars in unpaid utility bills will have to be "written off" by the city, resulting in much higher utility rates for the rest of us.
Hey - if Pen Ply only paid its outstanding utility bill, the city would only be facing a $400,000 "shortfall" in next year's budget.
Seriously though, I feel for the workers at Pen Ply. It sounds like they cannot be faulted in any way for the collapse (if indeed the collapse is as imminent as it appears). The managers appear to be little more than greedy exploiters. They have a lot in common with many of the folks in charge at city hall.

An article in today's PDN talks about the city spending $1.7 million from the "Economic Development Fund" for more design and related work on the new Waterfront Esplanade". The City Manager is reported as saying that this particular project is going forward despite budget red ink because the public wants it to. Huh? Since when was the public given a chance to rank the priority of this project against others also requiring public dollars?
I'd be willing to bet that, if given the chance, the majority would prefer to put this project on hold until better economic times.
As for implication that the money for waterfront redevelopment comes from the Economic Development Fund and is therefore somehow "free" from the usual city spending concerns (the $3.5 million represents the remainder of the $7.5 million graving yard settlement, whittled-down by such winning economic development projects as the Gateway and HarborWorks), how about letting the people vote on how they would prefer to spend these remaining dollars? Maybe they'd think that this money would be better spent in helping to pay for utility infrastructure so that residents and businesses won't have to shoulder such costs through higher utility bills?
The "leaders" in charge at city hall are soooo out of touch. Many need to GO.

It's certainly a good thing that i am here to eliminate the negative and not be messin' around with Mister In-Between. Unlike many of you who seem to delight in wallowing in the Negative!

While this is a pretty amazing figure, let's remember that it's a mere hundred thousand short of a million. Hey folks, we have 100,000 to go until we hit the million dollar deficit mark!

Should we sit on our collective laurels and bask in the glow of of a job well done, or shall we overcome, persevere, put our shoulders to the grindstone and hit that one million dollar mark?

I am for the positive! I am for the triumph of YES over NO! We as a town can do it! Come on, everyone, let's hit that million dollar deficit mark!

Ransomed C. Pork, you are SOOO right!

I feel better knowing we are so much closer to getting to that one million dollar mark. Com' on Port Angeles, we can do this. Work on this debt. We can build on this. Bigger is better.

A good way to spend some of the money left over from the graving yard settlement, and cut the future budget deficit: for starters do whatever it takes to immediately get the City Manager, City Attorney, Director of Public Works, Director of Economic Development, and Director of Personnel off the city payroll, and don't fill those positions for at least one year.

The reason Port Angeles has "No vision" is because its filled with backwards rednecks and their trailer spawn.
This town has too much "working class" and not enough luxury class. Sorry to say it, but low-income people lack funds to put much back into the community. They're too concerned with "their own" to focus on or contribute money to any bigger vision. They want to enjoy the benefits without covering any costs. They are the leaches sucking the city dry.

A high unemployment rate could be good if it forces low-income minimum wagers to move (thus freeing up more land for better development). However,There NEEDS to be something to attract people with money and offset the difference, or you'll just end up with an empty town. That is what the city needs more work on. Figuring out how to draw retired wealthy people in, as well as making the area attractive for summer homes, and other big development type investments like resort spas and luxury vacation rentals (while keeping the jail trash out). Do that, and the money invested will trickle down into the community, areas get improved, and tourism business is increased.

Hey! There was this guy Adolf a few years back that had a solution you might be interested in: "Public showers" that were really gas chambers. Worked really well to get rid of millions he saw as society's riff-raff. He too wanted to clear away the human "garbage" so that his vision of a better community could be accomplished. Why move the "problem" to somebody else's backyard when you can just deal with it right here, right now. Think of the jobs a local "Public Showers" solution would create!

Just saying..

And who's going to operate these resort spas? Who's going to sell goods to these wealthy seniors? Remember the service class is largely minimum wage. Drive them out and the wealthy seniors will be sitting in front of Home Depot all by their lonesome wondering why none of these lazy punk kids ain't doing no work (because they can't afford to live here and have moved elsewhere, that's why)

Godwin's law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies) is a humorous observation made by Mike Godwin in 1990 that has become an Internet adage. It states: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1 (100%)." In other words, Godwin put forth the hyperbolic observation that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably criticizes some point made in the discussion by comparing it to beliefs held by Hitler and the Nazis.

Maybe makes sense to you, but in the real world, it doesn't work out that way. The rich do not pay well.
They are rich because they hoard the bucks.

Wrong! They buy quality houses and vehicles. They buy quality furniture and food. They support the arts and crafts. They donate to charities and support other non-profits.

p.s. They also have fine furniture and antiques restored. I'm on AngiesList out here in the O.P. now with 19 reports from "rich people", All "A"'s in all 5 catagories. Hit me up if you need quality furniture put in good order...:)

I would hardly classify Port Angeles or the Oly Pen as a "wealthy community".

Any poor shmuck that actually DOES provide services in communities that actually ARE recognized as "wealthy" knows well that the rich do not pay well. They scrimp and argue about bills more than anyone.

Looking back at the online discussions on this site, it is obvious Randall is right, once again. Everyone can see every thread eventually has some reference to Hitler. Check it out.
