Well, six sub patrol boats may be moved here so others are excited that they will help the economy here.

How ever, they are not new positions, just transferred from another area. So basically, I guess we don't care if we steal economies from other areas.

I'm not clear how this helps the big picture of this country but it may mean those patrol boats may use less fuel?

Well, nice day, I'll get a couple of base coats sprayed on the boat.

Hum, another story in the fish wrap warns boaters to beware of smugglers in the San Juans. It just keeps getting more interesting around here.

maybe the unemployment rate is down from all the people leaving the area, and people giving up on getting benefits, have exhausted benefits, and/or given up looking for work. It's bullshit numbers. I don't see ANY jobs that have been added, so how is it the rate is down?
More nonsense from our leaders.

I visited Victoria a week or so ago with family, and on our return, I was impressed that the Coho was so busy that day. I said to one of the Coho employees that I was happy they were so busy, given the economy and all we hear. Their reply? "We're down from last year".

I didn't think too much about it at that time, but after awhile I remembered that the Victoria Express sold one of its' two ferries, then went out of the foot passenger service to Victoria, entirely last year.

And, that last year was not a particularly glowing year for economic prosperity in the area.

I then understood what I was being told. Despite the Coho ferry now being the only game in town, now combining all the traffic to Victoria that a few years ago took three separate ships to handle, there is such a reduced demand by tourists that the Coho ferry does not have patronage it had last year.

Who cares. Turn the channel.

blame the cost of passport restrictions, and the ridiculous cost for a passport. Of course people aren't going -- who wants to be snagged at the border for something? That is the impression, you know. Border Patrol doesnt' control the point of entry, but the impression is that it does.
This, coupled with a bad economy, have really nailed tourism in this town.

This is great news! I'm sorry all you negatrons with your limited minds can not see how wonderful this truly is.

And it is all because of me. Yes, people far and wide are recognizing how wonderful Port Angeles is and, yes, it is because I am making Port Angeles better. Each day, in every way I am am the beneficent Enlightened Being.

Thank you (no, thank me!)

Fewer can afford to travel, for a variety of reasons. Price of fuel hits both the ferries, airlines, buses, etc. AND the general public. Cost of getting to places like Port Angeles has increased, and then the ticket prices for the ferry has increased, too. It is now over $120 for one person and their car, round trip. Over $30 just to walk on.

The price of food, rents, and everything else has gone up so much, that there is that much less "disposable income" left to do much.

Anon 8:29 I agree with you about it being more costly to travel across the Sound. I'm not sure about your figures, I pay a lot less than $30 as a foot passenger from Winslow to Seattle. I agree it's a factor however. Mountains? Water? Seattlites can get those on the other side of the Sound: North Cascades, Rainier, St. Helens...

Also, Port Angeles isn't the only one with a buy local campaign. Doesn't it seem odd we're asking residents to buy local but asking people in other towns to not buy local?

And, finally, most of my Seattle friends don't want to come here because they consider this place "dirty". Just saying. Then they starting humming "Dueling Banjos" and I almost smack them... almost...

PA Nerd, I was talking about the round trip walk-on fare on the Coho, the only ferry operating out of Port Angeles.

Dueling Banjos? Can you squeal like a pig? Just saying..

Ahhh, gotcha. Yeah, I was thinking from Seattle. Coming from that direction is expensive enough. $30 walk on? $120 car. Wow. Too rich for my blood.
