Unplugging the Valley Creek Culvert

There's a buildup of sediment in a culvert at Valley Creek which could cause flooding during the upcoming rainy season. The Port Angeles City Council voted 5-2 to authorize Kent Myers to hire a contractor to remove the blockage.

The expected cost is between $35,000 and $100,000. Max Mania and Cherie Kidd voted No because contract bids have not been received. Glenn Cutler told the Council that because of the flood risk, the city didn't have time to wait until the September 20th meeting to bring bids to the Council.

This is such a good illustration of why the Director of Public Works should be fired. The sediment has been building-up for years, due to improper maintenance by the city. Now, suddenly, it is an emergency requiring the council to issue a blank check for the clean-out project, before the bids have even come in. Kidd & Mania were right to refuse to be bullied and manipulated like this. They were right to vote "no" until they could actually see the proposed contract and the cost of it.

I think Max Mania and Cherie Kidd are the only two Councilmembers who have the City's best interests at heart. The City needs to get several bids and make a responsible choice. Sheesh, even if money were not tight, that's the thing to do.

I concur. It's time this thoughtful young man who has devoted so much time to our fair town and shown true independence, exemplary leadership and a vision for a corruption-free Port Angeles be appointed Mayor.

Mayor Max Mania and Deputy-Mayor Cherie Kidd - a team we can depend on to keep it real in Port Angeles!

"Cutler said the city discovered the buildup in the last 100 feet of the culvert in May but didn't bring the issue forward earlier..."

Why? He says because a permit was not completed. So? The city council could not be told in May, six months ago so that they could plan ahead? They could not have put a bid out, 6 months ago?

Cutler continues to cost the citizens of Port Angeles for his incompetence. Kent Myers keeps Cutler. The city council majority keeps Myers.

seems damn high to unblock a culvert. Public Works Director seems to have no concept of money.

Oh, so now the righteous, concerned and oh-so-always-beyond -question line up to wag their collective fingers at a $30-100,000 questionable city action.

What about the $40 million project Cutler has the city committed to? I guess the city can afford that in these "tight" money times, right?

we need to take all the past approved projects off the books, an look at each one. But, that would mean that the people would have a say in government. Our city council cannot really tell the city what to do, as the latter is a train without a conductor, and our city manager has the "short time attitude" and couldn't care less.
