Cavernous Void Under Rt. 101 in Downtown Port Angeles
There is a cavernous "void" underneath the number one northbound lane of Lincoln Street, just south of First Street. Traffic officials have closed this lane and are detouring traffic.

Reminds me of an old joke. What does the Clallam County Commissioner's Office and a cavernous void have in common?
We will find out that the soils underneath the roads have been washed away by the totally screwed up stormwater collection system Glenn Culter has been in charge of for so many years.
But, of course, it is not his fault. Just throw a few more millions at something he is responsible for, but the taxpayers pay all the bills for. No matter what.

There really needs to be something like a "Prius Tax" we can collect from tourists to fix our roads. No way locals cause all that. Once the state and county run out of $$ we are so screwed. Or blessed.

LOL! That is pretty funny. Stand on First or Front Streets downtown for an hour or so on a given weekday with someone, and see how long you can hold a conversation. The trucks running through downtown make the walls in stores shake. What do you think they are doing to the roads??
And tourists? I was downtown last week, picking up a friend at the ferry terminal midday, down on Railroad Ave. We looked down the streets in every direction, and there was no one to be seen. It was really amazing.
And, from my experiences, not that uncommon for downtown Port Angeles..

Someday I need to sit down and figure out exactly how much the state is supporting this town.
We won't need a Prius tax once the "Asshole Tax" kicks in with those new smart meters. The more that comes out your ass, the more tax you pay. With trends around here, we will be able to spend, spend, spend.

My heart fell into a cavernous void last night at the City Council meeting, watching Cherie Kidd (once again) bending over repeatedly to kiss Nippon's ass. Her performance as a PR hack for Nippon was something to see - a real marvel. Her performance as an elected leader trying to protect the public good was less impressive. In fact, it made me want to vomit.
And so, on this 4th of July, 2012, a day on which we celebrate our independence, I do hereby ordain and proclaim Cherie Kidd to be the official Mayor of Nippon Town. The role of Mayor of Nippon Town is, of course, largely ceremonial, and the office of the Mayor of Nippon Town has no actual authority, moral or otherwise, to do anything. The Mayor of Nippon Town is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nippon Public Relations Department, and answers to said department in all matters. Any deviation from the agenda laid out by the Nippon Public Relations Department is cause for termination.
As for the citizens of Port Angeles, they may be subject to termination due to other actions of Nippon Paper Industries. However, the Mayor of Nippon Town will be along soon to explain (once again) why it's good and proper and, gosh, just darn good that Nippon is here, because they really, really, really, really, gee whiz really care about all of us. After all, haven't they given us the best Mayor money can buy?
I'm sure that the "void" underlying Lincoln Street was somehow a result of removing the Elwha River Dams. Glenn Cutler is now scheming about how to milk more money from the federal treasury to "mitigate" for this collapse. Gawd forbid that he or his department should be held accountable for their lack of oversight or maintenance of vital infrastructure.
More sweetheart deals for Nippon.
If you didn't have enough reasons to pack up and move to a community that actually is trying to have a decent, livable city environment to raise a family in before, you have one more.
Smart people will see the realities, and see that the beginning of summeris a great time to move, while the kids are out of school.

We demand the immediate ouster of that size-two tyrant, Cherie Kidd! Just as the Founding Fathers 236 years ago freed themselves from the shackles of tyranny, so to must we rise up and free ourselves from the onerous rule of this Nippon-loving ninny!
We demand progress, not repression!
The City should have required Mippon to pay for the air monitoring stations as a condition for receiving Shoreline and building permits. It was obvious that air pollution from the excess truck traffic alone would increase due to the biomass project. But there were precious few conditions placed on the city permits; among them silly things such as painting the new buildings in coordinating colors. Nothing to mitigate damage to the roads, environment, and public health. Too typical of the City's favoritism toward Nippon, sadly.
The project costs $71 million total and Nippon can't chip in another 20 grand for an air monitor? It shows you exactly how much they value our community.
Yeah, Nippon. If you're so sure that the air will be cleaner after your biomass incinerator is up and running, then shut-up your critics once and for all and pay for some strategically placed downwind air monitors in Port Angeles and Sequim. Record the air pollution levels right now and in the future, and conclusively show what a good corporate neighbor you are.
Until we have actual leadership at the city and county level and not just half-asleep bumpkins and ass-kissing morons, this town (and county!) will continue to sink into the morass of mediocrity.
We must use this election to get someoe with a real brain and real guts into the County Commissioners office and next year we must unseat the two prime examples of dead wood, Pat Downie and Brooke Nelson and replace them with real leaders.
2012 and 2013 are important election years in this county and for Port Angeles!
I agree that this is an important election, betting rid of dead wood-wise. But the problem is that in some cases, we only have dead (or corrupt) wood as the only viable candidate. Oh how I wish there was someon else to vote for other than Steve Tharinger, but his opponent is a dope, and hasn't a snowball's chance in hell of beating Tharinger.
In other cases, we have a real opportunity to vote for a highly-qualified new candidate, like Dale Holiday, but she's in a weird five-way primary, and who knows for sure what will happen. If people vote for their "friends," or for marginal candidates in the primary, then do-nothing Mike Chapman just rolls on into his fourth term. And does nothing.
All of which would, yes, set the stage for next year's City Council elections. The fun never stops.
Right. As if any of the last ??? local elections have really gotten Port Angeles out of the same-old, same-old circle jerk.
What exactly will/can Dale Holiday do? What exactly will "new" city council members actually do? We've gotten endless promises from candidates about all they will do, but once elected, nothing changes in Port Angeles.
Enjoy all the new heavy truck traffic through town as the bio-mass incinerator fires up, while paying increased taxes for the biggest project in the city's history.

I noticed the place down near Sunset Wire and Rope that used to rent moving trucks and stuff... moved away!
But, but...All you naysayers and clean-air breathers need to take heed of what Mayor McMoonshine of Nippon Town says: "Gosh! It's another GREAT day in Port Angeles!" And if Cherie Kidd says it's a great day, who are we to disagree?

Move? Yea, right. I'd rather live where the particulates originate, not where they are wreaking havoc - everywhere else east of here! Cool temps, low fire danger, few people, little risk from wildlife, relatively intact forests....I'm going hiking in Olympic National Park...and making a campfire. Ahhh.....
I used to support Cherie, but no longer. I advocated for her election, but I won't support her if she runs for re-election. Like so many other council members, she has been a major disappointment.
