Options for Lincoln Park Master Plan

Last week an audience heard three different options for tree removal in Lincoln Park.  Some of the trees are diseased and some are blocking the flight path to William R. Fairchild International Airport.

The three options are:  Doing nothing; removing trees that are currently and will be in the future obstructing access; and removing only those trees that are currently at/near obstruction limits.  There will be another meeting on October 10th, 6 p.m. at Vern Burton Community Center.

But pilot Mel Rudin said pilots are close to hitting the trees now as they approach the airport.

They call a hundred feet close? Hell, no points for that at a shooting match, Neil Armstrong would laugh at them. These morons that fly in here should have to take training at brush flying in Alaska.

I'd like more info. on the orchard/bird thing and less description of hippes, as lovely as they are. Thanks, though, PDN, very informative.

Don't fields attract birds like shit attracts flies?

All those future salmon in that nearby restored Elwha, will attract TONS of birds too.

Seems like that Bush adm. holdover from the FAA is going to HATE flying into PA, lol.

Like a few apple trees are going to increase the chances of a plane crash. TOTAL teaparty just do the opposite of what someone else wants BULLSHIT.

If I knew how to fly, lets say as well as Richard Bach, I'm pretty sure I would be comfortable flying into this airport just the way things are now.

Yes, but the whole Lincoln Park project has never been about the reality of the situation, but more about other interests. Everyone knows that. The "options" presented are just going through the motions of "public participation". The decisions were made long ago. And, not by any psuedo-democratic faux processes!

Like the song says:" Everybody knows..."

The citizens of PA should demand that, acre for acre, there should be a land swap. For every acre of land destroyed for no reason at Lincoln Park, the Port gives us, the 99%, an acre of OPEN FIELD NOT CONCRETE to use for recreation, and SHIT why not a beach, a quarter acre would do, at the PEN Ply site.

This is so stupid. If a bird hits a plane windshield, all the pilot has to do is roll down the window and wipe off the mess and continue on his way.

Now THAT is a good idea!

The Parks department had funding to maintain the park and they failed to do that responsibly, just like they failed to maintain Civic Field.

It's city property so it belongs to the public. The Port gets a lot of credit for "funding" the study that money is coming from an FAA grant. The FAA is funded by tax money so it's our money paying for the study. All the future funding options the consultant mentioned are grants which come from tax money too.

Even if the Port used their own money to pay for any of this it would still be our money because the Port was created by a public vote to manage public property.

And guess what happens when the funding for the non-airplane safety features dries up? They'll try to form a new tax district or property tax so that we're paying for it.

No matter what happens you can bet we will be the ones paying for it.

The Port knew that they would need to "expand" the airport in the near future, yet they failed to plan or budget for it. Instead, they essentially gave away 113 acres to the west (that could have been used to extend the runway, etc.) to the sprint boat crowd - which was a classic backroom sleazy deal. The City Council urged the Port not to do it; the Parks Advisory Board urged the Port not to do it. The Port did it.

Mind you, the sprint boat people said they really only needed five acres for their "hobby," yet they bought the whole 113 acres? Hmmm...Curious.

And now, the "solution" to the airport's needs is to raze a historic park. This will let the Port off the hook for their lack of foresight, and put the City on the hook for all future maintenance costs for the park.

So, lessons learned: Both the City and Port lack foresight, and both are pretty sleazy, but the Port is CLEARLY better at being sleazy than the City.

Karen Rogers for Port Commissioner anyone?

I'm curious about who got the money for cutting down so many tall trees from Lincoln Park a few years ago. Did the city or port hire somebody to do this and then just give them the timber, too? Will some such person or business get the same deal for cutting the remaining trees?

I had forgotten all about that sweetheart land deal for the sports park. Less than $9k per acre when a standard city lots are assessed at $50k just for the land.

Here are some nice articles from way back then:

Speaking of wood, I've got a great idea! Now that the economy is coming back in the US, three years of private sector job growth, at sustainable not bubble levels mind you, and housing construction and housing jobs will be coming back soon, and all these shabby houses in PA will be being fixed up soon, instead of covering them with vinyl siding, which fades and when catches on fire is EXTREMELY deadly and many fire depts. wont even go NEAR a house on fire with vinyl on it, why don't we build a factory, using our local trees, labor, and wood, and make siding! Or other wood products that go into making houses! Especially now that commodity prices are falling in China, and India, NOW is the time to take advantage of cheap local wood, and the impending need for it on our houses! Oh, wait! We need to wait for the economy to collapse again in order for that to make sense! I mean SHIT, even in these tough times, Sequim continues to grow! Can you imagine the demand soon! OH, WAIT! Been there done that! Lets just ban sodas...make them think we care.

"Now that the economy is coming back in the US.."

What drugs are you on? Do you have any concrete ideas on how the US debt is being paid off?

Romney says HE has the PLAN, but we don't hear any specifics.

Do you pay any attention to international news, where countries like Greece and Spain have had to deal with their national debt loads by imposing "austerity budgets" that have resulted in riots in the streets?

The US has done little to address any of the fundemental financial problems it has. As you may have noticed, Congress recessed WAY early, rather than try to solve any of these issues.

The "best" is yet to come.

PDN article about Port Angeles' budget deficit in todays' paper.

What a joke.

The City has been spending money this year like it has no limits. Now it says it has a "budget deficit" of $600,000.

Who saw THAT coming??

Here's something ironic. Those who pooh pooh people who want to save the Lincoln Park trees jeer them saying "There are plenty of trees around here. Just go enjoy them instead!" I bet that same scornful crowd is now fighting the Wild Olympics proposal because they want to be able to clear cut all the "other" trees that the Lincoln Park defenders are supposed to go visit.
