The Return of Mr. Floatie

Mr. Floatie James Skwarok dressed in a, uh, costume to portray Victoria's dumping of raw sewage into the Strait of Juan de Fuca made his first appearance in 2005. Sometime after that, Victoria developed plans for a $783 million sewage treatment plant.  But now, because of budget problems, Victoria might postpone the sewage plant completion from 2018 to 2040.

In response, Mr. Floatie has returned.

And today's Peninsula Poll question is:

Should local and state governments from this side of the border speak out to Victoria about its sewage in the Strait of Juan de Fuca?

With 839 votes cast, the results are:

Yes 91.3%
No 7.5%
Undecided 1.2%

Did Cherie already go over to Victoria? It would be a great time to mention the issue to them! *plop plop*

Well, as someone who has worked for the last 7 years on getting Victoria to build treatment facilities, I can tell you that this is not about "budget problems", but instead the Victoria equivalent of America's Tea Party spreading misinformation, and mis-leading people. These same people were against sewage treatment before there even was a plan.

What the media hasn't mentioned is that the Federal Ministry of the Environment issued a letter a week or so ago saying "No exemptions, no delays", basically telling Victoria to continue the work it has been doing to create treatment facilities.

The process has been long, with lots of studies, meetings, public comment periods, etc. 6 years worth, so far.

The Green Party of Victoria ran a candidate who said they support sewage treatment, but want more options and alternatives explored before proceeding. When asked what, beyond that which has already been investigated and discussed, they think should be explored, they had no response.

Hopes this helps,

Tyler

For those interested, there was a by-election held in Victoria today where the issue of sewage treatment was made a primary issue by at least one of the candidates. As a result, there was much media coverage of campaign events, town forums and more, all about sewage.

The Liberal candidate (who is not very "liberal" by American standards) made his anti-treatment stance his central issue, and declared this election a referendum on sewage treatment for Victoria. He lost, big time.

The two candidates who supported treatment split the majority of the votes, with Murray Rankin (New Democratic Party) beating Green Party candidate Donald Galloway.

Again, I hope this helps those interested.

Today's CRD Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee vote was 10 to 4 to reject two motions to kill or delay the project.

See! Mr. Floatie is effective!

LOL!

I'd like to personally deposit all my own Mr. Floaties into the mouths of the mega polluter business owners and corrupt city and county and port planners that are and will be subsidized by the homeowners of Port Angeles for mandated clean up costs in our harbour. Line em up, clamp their mouths open, and let them accept my one footers. They would probably enjoy it. Every month there is a new scheme to get us to be more green (where are my fucking lightbulbs assholes and when do we switch to LED?) or to extract money from us, study us and our habits and "needs", while they do NOTHING to make this a better and viable place to live. I say EAT MY SHIT ASSHOLES and it will end up in your septic probably, not in the straits - and will be much better for the environment. And it will improve your diet.

Someone "tampered" with the PDN poll today and the string was pulled. Maybe it was Mr. Floatie's friend, Mr. Tampon!

I noticed on the PDN site a real knuckle-dragger trying to convince people that Victoria has primary treatment. Do these guys think lying about the situation does anybody any good?
