Strait Could Have Sevenfold Increase in Tanker Traffic

Kinder Morgan Canada wants to expand its Trans Mountain pipeline that carries tar sands oil from Alberta to the Vancouver, BC region.  If this plan is approved, up to 34 tankers a month could carry oil through Haro Strait and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

You'll note that article did not include the impacts of the Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline, which got approvals a week or so ago.

And, no discussion about the impacts of all that increase in CO2 that oil is going to generate. Just "Don't spill oil on my backyard".

I guess the ships coming in for minor repairs here would help the local economy some. And Arrow Marine would pick up more work.

What do you think Obama is going to do about the Keystone XL oil pipeline? Say no, when the US is working to be the world's top producer of oil within the next year or two?

Gosh - why don't city leaders lobby to have a pipeline extended from Canada to Ediz Hook? Then the tankers wouldn't have to travel further into Puget Sound. Port Angeles is a natural to become an oil port!

The part that I find most telling in today's PDN article on Steve Markwell, is the fact that the people taking custody of the dogs he had - dogs that, supposedly, were essentially feral, a menace to all living things - were described as being fairly normal and non-vicious overall. In other words, these supposedly vicious dogs, who'd just endured a rough, noisy and thirsty trip in the back of a semi, were pretty normal.

Which, to me, totally supports the idea that Markwell is nothing more than a dog hoarder. He wasn't taking in unadoptable dogs, vicious dogs - he was just collecting dogs, period. It's not admirable or charity, it's a type of mental illness. And that illness was aided and abetted by Matthew Randazzo and the board of the OAS, who had to know it was all a hoax.

What a story. I'm glad the dogs are safe, and finally with people who will actually care for them. But Markwell and his enablers ought to be locked up.

Unless things change for the better, and it starts raining down south, it will be an interesting year on the West Coast.

I went down to Cali last spring, and the creeks were dry, then. Hasn't rained worth talking about, since.

But, hey! You should see this really cool new video game I got!

"But Markwell and his enablers ought to be locked up."

Nothing like being judged, convicted and executed, based totally on conjecture!

The spiel was that these dogs had records and histories of attacking and biting other dogs and humans. Do you have ANY real evidence this is not true?

You say "his enablers" should be locked up, as well. So, you have ANY real evidence that they participated in anything wrong? You think they all were so mezmerized by Markwell, that they believed nice cuddly puppies were actually killer dogs?

Yeah, what a story.

9:02 - Yup. Look up what happened to Mike Vick's dogs. Only one had to be put down and the others all were adopted eventually. It's a myth, mean dogs. In a good home, that understands a particular dog's needs, nearly all "killers" can be rehabbed. Not that that happens that often. I would imagine he can claim to have saved some of those individual dogs in the end. But all that money, all that energy, a gazillion more dogs could have been saved. Spay and neuter your animals. Or better, don't get a dog. I'm so glad those idiots are gone. If you have stupid children, DO NOT let them do LSD. Just a theory.

The way this continues to unfold shows that Markwell is a liar, probably an animal hoarder, and has a loyal-if-misguided core of supporters (who seem to ignore all evidence that Markwell did wrong).

Yet, his own boaerd, led by Randazzo, abandoned him. The oversight group that OAS set up to help get things in order dissolved itself - because the members couldn't work with Markwell. And he is being sued for scamming $50,000 from a donor - among other lawsuits.

So yeah, I WOULD agree that Steve Markwell should, and eventually will, be locked up.

So, do some research, and find out how many "no kill" shelters there are in North America, for starters.

Then, go visit them, and see the conditions. Interview their Boards, if they have one.

Find out how much money is donated to them, each year.

Get some real perspective, of what really is going on.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), based in Washington, D.C., is the largest and most controversial nonprofit organization advocating animal rights in the world. It claims more than 11 million Americans among its members and supporters.[2][3] In 2009, HSUS reported assets of over US$160 million,[4] despite only 1% of their budget going to shelters.[5][6]

There is a bit of perspective!

I would have thought HSUS had more $$. GOOD, that they don't give to shelters. That org. and Planned Parenthood need to be more radical, and merge. And spend tons of cash on slick, depressing advertising that would run for eternity, in all media, bombard the mother$%^ers, discouraging people, esp. young couples from getting puppies and breeding themselves.

Yes, this summer will be interesting. I hope we end up getting some good rain/snow and the Cascades don't ignite this year. We will be SOL on the peninsula. That is going to happen soon, the state/region etc. will be overwhelmed by fire. And that first time we are overwhelmed, will be just a taste of what climate change has in store for us.

Sorry to get off topic. I do appreciate the gossip about these slimeballs. What were we discussing? Oh, extremely large amounts of tar sand oil will be viewable from your house, going by. Maybe we will get refineries here too! I think this force has the potential to divide the continent in some serious ways, more than future water issues.

Ha ha! Think the PA City Council appreciates Ron Allen's column today urging communities to move up away from shorelines?

"But Ron, we just bought a new waterfront development! And we're going to put in a new beach!"

DUH! Idiots!

7:53 AM, January 05, 2014

So, Ron Allen is telling us that we should plan on sea level rise because of Climate Change. That we should expect 5 feet rise.

Too bad the leadership in Port Angeles doesn't seem to get that. Think about it. Almost all the big, multi million dollar projects the City has got us all paying for, are on the waterfront.

Purchasing 11 acres of the former Rayonier mill site, the CSO tank-o-crap, HarborWorks, the waterfront trail, the new waterfront sidewalk downtown, Graving Dock, the former PenPly site, the biomass incinerator, the landfill seawall. To name a few.

Now, there is wise use of public funds!

7:53/9:33 - Oh, but you don't see the big picture! The "other" part of town with the Library, High School, the new Middle School, The College, the Arts Center, the National Park Headquarters (to name a few things) the dry/warmer/sunnier part, with the pretty view, with most of the middle and upper middle class spending power in the city, is getting a new truck route! They ARE thinking ahead!

@ 1:01 PM.....

What makes you think the location of the new library, the schools, the park headquarters and the others you mentioned had anything to with the nuts in city hall?

The way they think, if they got to pick the location of a new school they would put it on the waterfront.

Yes, because I'm sure a new truck route cutting through their upper class neighborhood is exactly what they were hoping for.

@1:01 LOL!

Yeah. And they probably got a grant to build the new truck route up Race Street.

And, you know how it is. If you don't spend the money, you can't justify asking for more!

When the rising waters damage or destroy everything they built on the waterfront, you KNOW they will be asking for more money to rebuild.

And, hire more consultants, of course!

The link to the Puget Sound Maritime Air Emissions Inventory contains Table 3.37 which summarizes emissions from ocean going vessels in Clallam County. I wonder how 6,296 tons per year of NOx, or 5,488 tons per year of SO2, or 392 tons per year of diesel particulate matter, or 336,717 tons of CO2 equivalent compare to the emissions some folks fussed about when they came from a stationary source?
