Tim Smith to speak at Tuesday's PABA meeting

Tim Smith, interim director of the Clallam County Economic Development Council, will be the guest speaker at Tuesday's meeting of the Port Angeles Business Association.

The only thing I remember about Tim Smith is that he spoke out against the Farmers Market at a City Planning Commission meeting (summer of 2005).  Everybody who was in favor of the Farmers Market was given thirty seconds to speak, and they were constantly interrupted by the Planning Commission Chairman yelling "Get to the point!" and "Time's up!"  When Tim Smith got up to speak, he spent about twenty minutes pausing, poring over documents and notes, pausing again, with no interruptions or shouts of "Time's up!" from the Planning Commission chairman.

But I digress...

Yeah, I was around for that, and more.

They don't get much more "good ole boy" in Port Angeles than Tim Smith.

Port Angeles is utterly hopeless.

Sell your house now, for whatever you can get, and GET OUT. It will NOT get better.

Tim Smith is a douchebag of the highest order and permanent member of the good old boys club in PA. He's been fucking things up around here for a long time. So he's a perfect choice to run the EDC.

Does anyone know his full legal name? I'd like to look up what property he owns but there are bunch of different Timothy Smiths in the assessor's database.

Tim Smith married one of the Del Guzzi twins. You know, that family that owns all the properties in and around Port Angeles? The properties he "manages" likely are not in his name, and belong to the family he married into.

No, he is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he knows how to make it work for him.

And welcome to the new Chamber President, Todd Ortlof! Yet another brilliant, modern, progressive thinker in a position of (ha ha ha) authority in Port Angeles. So many good things happening, I hardly notice the empty storefronts and utter lack of business activity!

I'm sorry but the whole sell your house line. Where are you headed? Issaquah? Denver? Friday Harbor? Oh, ok. Port Angeles is an excellent place to live, raise a family, and invest in real estate. Planning is odd, granted, and it may suck if you have no money and have to walk around in the rain all the time, looking for work, or if you suffer from a lack social skills, but good times are ahead for the area. Especially if you are in the trade or own real estate when the next boom starts. That would be the time to sell, not now.

Now if we were in a shitty part of the country, and the local governments were about ready to go bankrupt, that would be different. We are too close to Seattle. We are too close to Sequim and PT. We are too close to Victoria. A few idiots, and one or two poorly planned strip malls, can't depreciate one little town, in a vast sea of upper middle class growth.

Why change things when they're working so well?

Obviously the leadership have gotten the message, and are recycling the same people into new positions to be sure Port Angeles keeps moving in the direction is has for the last ??

Just got the "Port O Call" rag today...Had a few hearty laughs. Dale Wilson...What a fool. I mean, anyone who gives Peter Ripley a platform is clearly a fool. It bashes the city...And provides Nathan West a forum to spin his high-tech fantasies for Port Angeles. It's a total train wreck, much like Port Angeles itself. Ha!

Corrupt? Incompetent? Just plain dimwittted? Then come on down to Port Angeles! We've got some waterfront property (right by our sewage tank) to sell you!

How discouraging to learn that Ortloff is the incoming Chamber president. And, a pity that KONP emits the strongest radio signal in the region. As a result of these two factors, the outside world will have no reason to view Port Angeles as anything other than a nest of insular and small minded right-wingers.
Sadly typical, though.
I agree with Anon 4:45 PM from1/5.

Hey, Port Angeles boosters: Here's something for you to do. Get out, go downtown, and walk around. See if you see more actual people (shopping or whatever) than you do empty storefronts. Repeat this exercise for several days. Hint: It's especially effective if you do it after 6PM, when, as we all know, the whole world goes to sleep, so there's no need for anything to be open, right?

Then, once you've seen the reality of a dying town, as represented by a dead downtown, really, really, really think about whether or not Port Angeles has a future as anything other than a shrinking, decaying ghost of a town. Think about the idiots in charge. Think about those shrinking US Census numbers for Port Angeles. Think about that "3rd highest opiate death rate in the state" thing. Think again about the recycled idiots in charge. Just THINK.

It's not a pretty picture. No future, no hope, no chance. Sorry Port Angeles, the world passed you by long ago.

BBC - good one.

Interesting online ed. of the PDN today, with the National Geographic special tonight running about the new age con artist in Forks. I gotta hand it to the consultant Forks has! Money well spent!!!!!! And the sand sculpture being destroyed in Sequim. That may not sound like big news, but it's sad to legitimate artists and good people and I think it's typical for the area.

"Oh, ok. Port Angeles is an excellent place to live, raise a family, and invest in real estate."

This is sad. Reminds me of the old Florida real estate scams.

Obviously, the person who wrote this is a local real estate agent of some ilk. They are the ones making money on the poor souls that get suckered into buying in Port Angeles.

Was on the ferry coming back from a visit to Victoria yesterday. As we got closer to Port Angeles, I could hear people talking about the smoke plumes coming up from the Nippon mill. First, they thought there had been some kind of explosion, as the plume formed what looked like a mushroom cloud above the mill.

Then, as we got closer, they realized it was a factory of some kind. The conversation turned to a worry about toxics they might be exposed to.

No kidding. Older folk. Sounded by their accents to be from the US south.

A window into how strangers see Port Angeles, as they approach it.

Had the same experience as those tourists many years ago, found a little bit of the south in the pacific northwest. Being a young idealist, figured it would change and moved here anyway, raised a family, made a ton of money. And my wife spent a third of it, left me, kids moved away, never talk to me, and downtown is still a shit hole. I see it, and it warms my heart, reminds me of the nice family and times I had and all the money made. Hope it does not change and that it inspires others like myself.

Where are the young, dynamic, brilliant leaders of tomorrow for Port Angeles? People like Maggie Roth and Sandy Long. I mean, all we get are old, recycled rejects like Tim Smith. Where are the Leaders of Tomorrow??? Barb Frederick can't save this place on her own, you know!

Recycled leaders? But Port Angeles has a brand new mayor, Dan DiGuilio, who hasn't been mayor before...except for two years ago.

Sigh...

Still, it IS a better choice than either Cherie or Brad. The lesser of three weevils.

George Burns once said "Too bad the only people who know how to run the country are busy driving cabs and cutting hair" to update that quote for the modern age we probably need to add "and anonymously posting on the internet".

Don't you think it even possible that at least some of our elected, appointed and volunteer leaders could be decent folks, trying to do their best in a nearly impossible job? In our community, just like the rest of the country, we are so deeply divided, and so closed minded to any compromise that our leaders cannot propose ANYTHING without hearing from around half of their constituents that they are complete idiots. Instead of all the cynical hate mongering, why can't we offer constructive ideas on this blog?

Anon 5:52 says ".. reminds me of the nice family and times I had and all the money made. Hope it does not change and that it inspires others like myself."

Yes, that is the impression I get when I walk around Port Angeles. A prosperous town where people make tons of money.

You can tell by all the flourishing stores , Gucci outlets, and Mercedes parked in front.

I'm reminded of only a couple years ago, where the city leaders spent over $1 million to contact, promote and otherwise try to get residential, retail, commercial and industrial built on over 60 acres of waterfront property in Port Angeles.

What did they find out after that effort? No interest from any of them.

Yes, as Anon 5:52 says, let's not change a thing. It IS so inspiring here!

You must be either new to Port Angeles, not ever tried to do anything in Port Angeles, or some combination of both.

Many people have tried to do all kinds of things. People stand up in front of the City Council, and try to communicate all kinds of ideas and observations.

Yes, the council members mostly ARE decent people, but are generally clueless. And, without ANYTHING that remotely looks like a spine.

Unless you are telling the council how wonderful they are, and how great everything is, they don't want to hear what you have to say.

If you point out any flaws in their process or projects, instead of investigating your concerns, they just find ways to justify what they did. And "bad" things continue.

Go ahead. Find out for yourself. I hope you find out otherwise.

What a surprise that this man would crawl out of the woodwork with the money to be made in the new state system of farms, processors, and stores and the "management" of it here.

Max Mania had a clue, and a spine, and they drove him out of town. No wonder no one signed up to run for city council last time. Why bother? It's all a big fucking joke.
