Vandalism at City Pier

The City really needs to crack down on vandalism. Vandalism and graffiti are always wrong, but defacing the Ennis Creek mural on City Pier was a new low. It always seemed to me that the City’s murals and other artwork were immune from vandalism, but apparently not. (I know the Kalakala mural on Laurel Street was also graffiti’d not too long ago.)

If the perps can't be found on the surveillance tapes at City Pier and the adjacent parking lot, the city needs more and better surveillance equipment.

The best solution would be to hire more police officers, but that’s pretty unlikely. That seems to be a much lower priority than paralyzing Port Angeles with umpteen simultaneous construction projects.

Any ideas on how to reduce crime in Port Angeles?

Port Angeles doesn't have enough to do. Kids are bored.

You know, this shouldn't be front page "hand wringing" news. Get an over paid city worker out there with a can of MEK or Acetone and start scrubbing! If the jaw flapping had been converted to scrubbing....it would have all been taken care of.
The cop who patrols that beat at night drives the pier every hour or so. More cops are not needed....what's needed is some common sense. First of all...it's BIG news...instead ignore it, and clean it up. By causing a fuss we are giving the disenfranchised (those that would spray paint) some fame.
Personally, I suspect someone in city government did this, to focus the public's attention on something other than the pending bankrupting of the city with all these projects...like the costly "Walmart's personal sewer hook up", the money pit Gateway, the downtown sewer replacement, the 8th street bridge replacements, and hiring the archaeologist and city planner.
"oh, look over there...a hate crime..."

Only two options:

1. The pier should open a 24 hour doughtnut stand. Make sure there is coffee. You'll have more head cracking, jack booted coppers than shift change at city hall.

2. Quadruple points on teenagers, spray paint or not. No penalty for driving on the sidewalks.

The answer is reinstate public hangings, tar-and-featherings, burnings at the stake ... like the good ol' days.

I was really glad to see that the mural was repairable. Thanks to Cory Ench for using a sealer so that in the event of any kind of vandalism . . . which happened, of course. People just never seem to evolve anymore. We're still doing these crummy little things, making our little statements to whomever might care. I agree with anonymous #2 in that we shouldn't give these idiots the 5 minutes of fame that probably validates them in some way.

Oh, and P.S.: A big thank you to the wonderful volunteers at Norwest Rotary who cleaned the mural. You folks are awesome.
