Cruise Ship Coming to Port Angeles
The Holland America Line cruise ship Statendam will be in Port Angeles tomorrow. The 1,266 passengers will have nine hours — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. — to check everything out.
Three years ago — May 2006 — was the last time a cruise ship pulled into Port Angeles (not two years ago as the PDN stated). I was out of town during that period, but I heard that most of the passengers who left the ship got as far as Gottschalks and just hung out there for their whole visit.
This time there seems to be a lot more planning and preparation. The Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Olympic Visitor Bureau are setting up a welcome tent to greet passengers as they disembark. They’ll be giving away maps, brochures, sightseeing information and coupons for downtown shopping.
Before leaving the ship, passengers will have the chance to sign up in advance for tours of Hurricane Ridge, Crescent Lake, the Hoh Rain Forest and local wineries. There will be shuttle buses to take passengers to several downtown locations, and the Landing Mall will have about twelve arts and crafts vendors.
Welcome, passengers! And as televangelists are always saying: “Dig deep into your wallet.”

Good to see the various P.A. organizations organizing to take advantage of this. Maybe the next time a cruise ship docks, in 2012, they'll have gotten all the bugs out and be a force to reckon with!
Naah. It'll take until at least 2018.
Can I get a tourist hunting permit at Swains?
wunner if i can sneak on the ship. i culd liv gud!
Oh the panhandling opportunities. I am going to put on my smallest speedo and be a one person welcoming committee!
Ummm, not like the people on cruise ships get off the boat...sure not for a po-dunk town like PA.
I'm sure they will just sleep in, get up for some Mimosa cocktails and brunch, read a magazine, and take a nap until dinner. Lets face it, you only GO on cruises if you are fat, lazy, and uninspired. It's all about the DRINKS AND FREE FOOD, man!
There were plenty of touristy-types walking around. Not sure if they bought anything, but I did see them out and about in beautiful balloon-filled Port Angeles.
I did not, however, see a panhandler in Speedos. And for that I am grateful.
Bwa ha ha ha ha haLike a bad penny, Doctor Nosferatu returns ...
I realize that the local talent for evil underlings is not exactly overly abundant around these parts, but is it too much to expect a simple yet nefarious endeavor be carried out correctly?
I recently entrusted a small yet vital scheme to a local minion and that bungler has failed miserably, costing me a great deal of money and wasted time. My unspeakably evil plans have been set back by an absolute nitwit! I'm sure many of you business owners can understand my plight.
I have ways of making this bungler pay for failing me, even in so small a matter as this is (was)!
Instead of a display of theatrical costumery at tomorrow night's Studio Bob, this fool's dirty laundry will be displayed. Oh the shame!
Let this be a lesson. Do not fail Doctor Nosferatu again.
ciao,
Doctor Nosferatu, Evil Genius
Was this a discount cruise?
Most of the people had NO money and thought verything was way to expensive in P.A.
I must admit it was a bit funny watching a few go back and forth to the coffee shops trying to find the lowest cost on a black coffee.
They were from MEXICO for crissakes....
Liz,
You continue to be a moron. The boat was NOT from Mexico!
If you read (which I know would be something unusual for you) the article said: "The cruise started in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Tuesday. The ship will visit Port Alberni on Vancouver Island before returning to Vancouver on Sunday. "
It was a short run, one of the Holland America specials.
Geez, Liz...start using your noggin.
the cruise ship was from Vancouver B.C. It was a very short run trip (1-3 days) From Vancouver to Seattle to PA, to Victoria, back to Vancouver. This is something that cruise ships are doing to keep their crew and boat occupied when people are unwilling to shell out the bigger bucks to go on a "real cruise".
Liz, you are such a hate monger. No it was NOT from Mexico. It was full of old lady British Columbia. Duh!
Holland America charges under 200 bucks for two days on a cruise ship...and I think there are "deals" for various groups through travel agents. What we had...were a gaggle of people who could pony up a few dollars for three "all you can eat" free meals, and a stateroom, and a very inexpensive BAR.
I'm surprised that they could stagger off the boat.
Liz never ceases to amaze me at how ill informed and downright bitter she is. Isn't there some kind of support group for her? She needs "Bitter Babes Annon" or something.
