Bike Patrols in Jefferson County
Some Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies have started patrolling on bicycles. So far they’re using bikes in Port Hadlock, Irondale and Brinnon.
Jefferson County Sheriff Tony Hernandez said: “Everything changes when you are on a bike. You hear more, you see more and you make more contacts with people. Also, you move better and faster than on foot or getting out from your vehicle.”
Deputy Brett Anglin said: “It really is a stealthy unit. These things run very silent, quieter than a car for sure. Also, on a bike at night you don't look like a cop. You just look like some guy on a bike. I don't think we have encountered anyone on the bikes who saw us coming.”
So far Clallam County has no plans for bike patrols. Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict said: “We don't have any bike patrols. To be honest, I don't know of any places where we could effectively use them.”

In the county I suppose that is mostly true. In the county everyone should just be a cop of sorts and ready to call dispatch if they see something going on that isn't right so an officer can get there right away.
But some bike controls in the city may make sense, and they are cheaper than Segway's.
BTW, where does that Segway hang out anyway? I've only seen it once.
The last two comments on my blog today are a hoot.
You think the cops here would get off their Segways? How often do you see any cops walking around? Even if they do get on a bike, traffic around here is so bad and so stupid, they'd all get hit by cars.
officer seqway is too fat to use a bike, and way too lazy. He's dangerous on that thing and until he hits someone (which is an accident waiting to happen) he's going to continue to create negative pr. After all, it's like a bad action movie: robocop v.s. the people.
I think bike patrols are great. Just another reason why Port Townsend is thriving, and Port Angeles is withering.
Ask any downtown business how often Officer Segway has ever stopped in and chatted on his 'beat'. He'd rather be flying around town. LOOK AT ME, I'm important. I'm having FUN. wheeee.
Well, I was thinking that maybe robo cop was patrolling a beat in the evening downtown when more of the shady and party monkeys are out, it's pretty peaceful on the streets during the day and I'm seldom in that area in the evening.
Officer Seqway only works days....when he can be really ineffective. Night patrols..hahahaha. That will be the day.
Oh, I suppose you are right, the donut shop isn't open at night as I recall.
Benedict does not know where we could use the bikes? How about the same places the police use those expensive Segways?
I see BBC mentioned the Segways. BBC - they hang out by Hollywood beach and the Dairy Queen. They may be out at Gateway now. I have not been down there yet.
