British Columbia Closes Its Tourism Agency

British Columbia’s provincial government has shut down Tourism B.C., the corporation that’s responsible for promoting British Columbia all over the world.

Tourism is a ten billion dollar industry in B.C.; it's the fourth largest industry in the province.

It doesn’t sound like a smart move to me; I hope they know what they’re doing.

"On Monday, Minister of Tourism Kevin Krueger announced that the independent Crown agency will close and be merged with the province’s tourism-marketing office.

“The thrust is to join the two very effective units. We want them working together, benefiting from each other’s ideas and energy,” Krueger said. “We need to get all the pieces in place so we capitalize on every one of the myriad of opportunities that will flow to our economy from the Olympics.”

Tourism BC was an independent Crown corporation financed by a motel and room-tax surcharge, but that tax will drop when the HST becomes effective in July 2010.

Tourism BC was created in 1997 as a marketing tool for the province. Full closure will take place on April 1, but changes will take place gradually until then. The board of directors was dismissed and replaced by a minister’s advisory council.

The 146 employees of Tourism BC will likely merge with the tourism ministry."

Oh, for a moment I thought that meant from the Olympic Peninsula, he he he.

But hey, if we didn't go spend our money there we wouldn't need them to come here to spend it again.

Interesting is the fact that all the travel back and forth is just killing the planet.

It's why I just stick close to home anymore, not that I think others care.

Tourism. Utilizing our natural resources to their fullest potential. Max Mania realizes that every dollar a tourist spends on the Peninsula means income for business owners and workers alike.

Max Mania has the vision and the leadership ability to make our local and natural resources, be it the waterfront, the Fine Art Center or the various parks, live up to their full potential bringing the tourists and their money in ... and bringing them and their money back again.

Edna can talk all she wants to, but she hasn't got the vision, the leadership or the creativity to do anything more than just talk.

You want more than just talk, don't you? You want leadership, vision and action. You want Max Mania.

Max,
These non stop promotion plugs are making me want to vote for Edna. Please stop being annoying in such an obvious and hard sell way. And, try writing in the FIRST person, instead of the THIRD, please.
It's really weird.

Sure that's even Max Mania? After all, he got the name of "Max's Favorite Band" wrong.

Still wouldn't vote for him.

Exactly. Why would Max talk about himself in the third person, let alone in bold all the time?

I think it's some star struck fan with dreams of becoming a publicity agent.

And then they go spend the money in some other location instead of here.

So what is the point??? Especially when I have no need for them to be here anyway when the city and county keeps raising our taxes to make things better for outsiders.

I say that if the business community wants others to come here that they can invest their own money to get them here.

And then those business owners and employees will go to other places to spend the money they picked up here.

Again, what is the point???? Vacation at home I say. I spend all my camping and vacation money in this area, aside from one trip to Cher's birthday party in BC last summer.

But I didn't spend much money while there.
