Keeping Hurricane Ridge Road Open Year Around
People who want to keep Hurricane Ridge Road open all year will have to raise $75,000 by August 15th. That amount, plus $250,000 already available from the National Park Service, would keep the road open all winter. The road would still be closed about 20% of the time because of avalanche dangers and other unforeseeable weather conditions.
The Chamber of Commerce and the Port Angeles Forward Committee are leading the drive to raise the $75,000. Hopefully, local hotels, restaurants and other businesses will benefit from the increased number of visitors to the area if the road is open all winter.
The Winter Wildlands Alliance is also in favor of this. A spokesperson for the group says "Our aim is to ensure a safe, quiet, tranquil experience for every winter wildlands adventurer, now and always" and thinks Hurricane Ridge fits in perfectly with the group's mission.

(Just as long as we can drive)
people are long term out of work, and struggling to survive -- but THIS is important?
Business is down. Economy sucks. Why is it important to keep the ridge road open all year? The money is better spent to keep families afloat.
Here's a idea, the people that want to get up there in the winter can just damn well foot the bill.
Blogger has really been screwing up the comments sections in our blogs, especially last evening.
I hope Michael Jackson Reincarnated's parents brand him.
Anonymous: Huh?????
If the road is open all year, the people will come...and help our local economy...restaurants, motels, etc., etc!
I'm all for a huge-ass gondola going from the base of the mountain all the way up, dropping people off to do their sking/snowboarding/whatevering and taking them back when they're done. I'd love to go snowboarding up there but the road is so iffy I usually don't even bother trying and go elsewhere. Imagine what someone from Seattle would say "Hey, do you want to pay up ferry fare and drive two hours and maybe Hurricane Ridge would be open, or do you want to go to Snoqualamie where we could ski for sure?" Other towns have tried the huge-ass gondola approach and reaped the rewards. Of course, this ain't other towns.
