New Hope for Empty Gottschalks Building

K.O. Erickson Trust, which owns the former Gottschalks building in downtown Port Angeles, formed a planning group last January. This group includes Jerry Nichols, co-owner of Coldwell Banker Uptown Realty; Roy and Mary Gotham; Kaj Ahlburg; Bill Herman, and Ted Simpson.

The group is hoping to open a locally-controlled department-store type of anchor store in this location next summer. First they're looking for a general manager. Jerry Nichols said:

"We're trying to fill it locally. If there are people out here that have this kind of experience [selecting products and overseeing buying], if there's anybody locally who looks capable of doing the job, we'd prefer to go there rather than go to a headhunter."

This store would sell brand name clothing, shoes and cosmetics. Nichols said:

"
The store would not be associated with a chain store but it would be able to stand on its own."

They may do okay, I don't know, but it's not likely I'll ever shop there.

The economy here may support it but the cabinet shop and quarry store just closed for lack of business.

Still, while I hear a lot of complaints about the economy I don't notice any reduction in traffic so all those monkeys must be running around doing something.

Hey, the library is just fine where it is. It's a good building that isn't that old and there's plenty of parking.

While some may not have any use for a library many do, and the free WiFi is cool.

I wish them luck. I'm not optimistic that they can pull it off in today's economy, but... I wish them luck.

I'm assuming this is a year or so out, so the market might improve by then.

It'd be nice to have a place to buy men's clothes in Port Angeles that a) isn't work clothes, b) doesn't fall apart in a few months or c) is actually affordable. I'll still shop at store a) if I want something tough, but selection is pretty limited there.

The Haters seem to hate Mr. Ahlburg because their favored person is an unemployed but "trained baker." But that's part of the Haters Liberal bias and stereotyping: clearly anyone who is a lawyer and worked on Wall Street must be Satan incarnate!

In these times of economic distress, who has the ability to offer practical advice and level headed solutions? The unemployed "trained baker" and/or "writer" ... or the person who has worked in legal and financial instutions?

Given the choices, the answer is crystal clear.

Well, Hater 7:36 Max "Mania" is a carpetbagger, too. Oh, but that's okay because he lived in San Francisco and Ashland, Liberal Utopias.

As for Hater 7:42, you clearly didn't read Mr. Ahlburg's editorial very well. He said that given the economic issues the average person faces, funding the NOLA with taxpayer money just doesn't make sense. Further, he said that he would contribute money towards the NOLA if the levy failed.

Now you Liberals are pretty big on spending other people's money, but not your own. Why don't some of you Libs put your money where your mouths are and join Mr. Ahlburg is privately contributing to the NOLA?

Please don't blame Mr. Ahlburg because Rayonier doesn't want to clean up their own mess.

Ha, ha! You tax and spender Haters just don't get it, do you?

Talk about hypocrisy. Carpetbagger "Mania" is good because he's well, a liberal tax and spender ... oh, and an unemployed "trained baker", too. He has lots of time to read his information packets, ask questions and bake some chocolate chip cookies on the side.

But Carpetbagger "Mania" is "honest" and has "integrity", even if he did post gossip and trash talk on this blog as "The Watcher". Nevermind the fact that he's in the pocket of Norma Turner, Darlene Schanfeld and the other enviro-crazies.

Mr. Ahlburg has held positions of responsibility (i.e. he's had a job) and, yes, he's moved here from outside the area. Oh, the Free Market Satan is among us! Run and hide!

So I'm guessing both you Haters were born and raised here in Port Angeles, right? Uh huh. Berkely, San Francisco or the Tax-and-Spend Paradise of the east coast is probably where you're from.

Why are you so touchy about your "Dear Leader", Comrade "Mania"? Perhaps you realize what a deeply flawed council member he is and perhaps, too, you realize that the Liberal contingent on the Council, Comrades Kidd and Di Giulio are gonna be gone after the elections in '11?

If this person was even REMOTELY credible, they would have read the recent letter FROM Rayonier, where they expressed their dismay at being mis-represented by HarborWorks (where Kaj is a Board Member)about their on-going committment to clean up their mess at the former mill site.

They were not asking for outside financial assistance in that letter, OR for a pass on their responsibilities to finish the clean up.

Read the letters (from Rayonier AND the response from HarborWorks the following day), and get your facts straight.

(I know this can be difficult when the PDN parrots the City/HarborWorks party line which repeatedly misrepresents what the Dept. of Ecology and others actually say.)

How far down this "path" do we really want to go? I haven't used child care, kindergarten, schools, the community development dept, city council, county commissioners, state representatives... that list gets pretty long.

Do we expect to have a decent quality of life, if everything is "pay as you go"? Are you going to advise your children to apply for the jobs of these "standby" public servants? People who don't get paid until someone wants the services they offer? How does that work? Is that a kind of job you would be interested in?

Whatta turd!

If that fool ever bothered to look into these issues, it would know that Rayonier is not asking for, nor needing any "negotiations". It has already spent $25 million on the clean-up, and has repeatedly stated publicly it's commitment to that effort.

And, if the Stupid Mindless Troll ever bothered to be involved in it's community, instead of sniping with insults, it would know that "litigation", and the threat of litigation drives much of the clean up processes. No sane party wants to give the site its' stamp of approval, until LOTS of studies are done.

Except for the Moron Club of Clallam County, that is all hot to have "government" get involved in a private property. I thought the "conservatives" didn't like government interfering in "individual property rights"? Rayonier is privately owned.

The Moron Club of Clallam County is being lead by the nose by a small cadre of real estate cronies, and somehow think that the State should cough up more millions so that Rayonier will GIVE their 75 acre waterfront site to the "public development authority". Guess who thinks they will be doing the "developing"?

Really? This pathetic troll THINKS it has proved something with it's STILL unfounded accusations, but no "proof" exists. If it thinks it has real evidence, it should go to the city council meetings, and lay out it's case.

And, this pathetic creature, striving for attention, continues to rant on about "Mania", as if nothing else going on in the community, or the world, is more important. If I were to use the logic this Turd has used to make it's own accusations, and think about what single person was most affected by the "Mania" victory, it would be Edna Peterson. Who else even remotely cares?

The person who posted this statement has things backwards. Council members should never be "afraid" of the City Manager. He works at the pleasure of the Council, not vice versa. Myers seems to understand this far better than his predecessor.
Some of the anonymous people who post here appear to be remembering a different era when hired staff ruled the elected officials with intimidation and an iron hand. This is beginning to change --- thanks to council members like Max.

Max Mania caused my grandmother's gout! And the drought! To him I say: out!

This just in! City Council to pay nearly 1 million for the sewer overflow tank, even without Rayonier's opinion on the matter. Max Mania is the sole "nay" vote. Damn him! Why can't he stop with the independent thought, stop asking all these questions and go on a spending spree with taxpayer money like a good City Council cog? Someone impeach that guy now!

Poor Max! Don't worry. We'll name the tank "Mania's Overflow Recepticle" or "The Watcher's Bullsh*t Tank"

LOL! Pretty funny. The only councilmember to question the obvious stupidity of the whole issue is now to be named as an icon of all the other councilmembers' stupid votes? Please explain how that makes ANY sense to anyone.

To the person who keeps posting about "Max/The Watcher"; We are still waiting with bated breath to hear of your great sleuthing skills, and to find out the real truth about Max really being an alien vampire that the author of those Twilight books tried to warn Port Angeles about. This is really important! We don't care about anything else, in the whole wide world. We just want to hear from YOU, about MAX.

Please don't make us wait any longer. Post now, and post frequently. Post your Twitter page, and Facebook page, so we can follow your moment-by-moment work to uncover and expose this alien vampire for all to see.

Your fan, Edward

To that person posting about Max/The Watcher. Where are you? Are you okay? I'm getting a bit concerned. It has been a few days since you have revealed your latest findings about Max. Did he find you, and bite you in the neck? I hope not.

If you're still okay, and have not been turned into one of Max's vampire minions, you might have had time to read about the latest happenings in the community. Do you think Max was behind the Banana Man, and his rampage in Port Angeles? Do you think Banana Man is also an alien, who came to Port Angeles with Max? I hope you have time to investigate this, too.

Please let us know what you find out about this.

Your fan,

Edward.

Twilight is so lame. Is this the best you can do? Like the person before your last lame post said, "Edward is a tweeker."

Personally, I think that "Mania", his acolytes and followers are more like leeches than vampires. Have you had your picture taken in front of Bella Italia yet?

You know what I'm going to say next, don't you?

MANIA ZOMBIES on the loose!

To the person posting about Max Mania. I am so glad to see that you are okay. I was worried. These are dangerous times, as you have shown us all.

Have you had any time to look into whether Max is really an alien vampire? You have shown us that no other things matter in the whole wide world. That only Max Mania is what we all should be spending our time worrying about. I hope that you don't stop your excellent sleuthing, now! Your facts and sources are beyond question.

So, we continue to wait with bated breath. I won't read any newspapers, listen to radio, or TV news shows, because you have shown me ONLY Max matters.

Your fan,

Edward

Go get your picture taken in front of Bella Italia.

As for your "satire" ... well, I'm crushed to the core by your scathing wit and venomous repartee. Surely the Algonquin Roundtable missed not having you as a member!

That's three strikes ... you're out!

To the person posting about Max Mania, Are you okay? I haven't read anything about whether Max is indeed an alien, yet. Did you get bitten, after all?

We all want to know. You have shown us that nothing is more important than your daily reports about Max Mania, and so we need to know if he is indeed an alien vampire.

I will continue to scan the web. Twitter. Facebook. Youtube. Anywhere I can think of. You must be out there, somewhere, providing the world with your valuable insights.

Don't worry. I'll find you.

Your fan,

Edward
