Hey, this makes sense. Stores close by the droves, empty storefronts are everywhere ya look, the city is so concerned it creates a group to look at ways to stop the "decline" of retail in Port Angeles, and sales tax revenue goes up?

Hmmm. Something doesn't add up with this.

yeah it is UP, because in 2010 the state RAISED SALES TAX RATES. Businesses had to kick in more $$ on their tax forms to cover what the state/locals wanted.

The state now taxes sodas, candy, and charges MORE taxes on other "sins". The B&O tax has been "temporarily" raised (meaning no real discussion, until 2013, when they make it a permanent raise).

This story is total and utter bullshit. Means that people in PA are drinking Pepsi and eating more candy, cigarettes and booze... look around, you'll see a multitude of fatties, and smokers.

http://budgetandpolicy.org/reports/revenue-measures-enacted-in-washington-state-in-2009-and-2010

To help maintain services during a recession, it is a common practice for state policymakers to adopt temporary tax hikes. Though the current recession has been especially deep and long-lived, it is nonetheless a temporary phenomenon and its impact on state budgets will eventually subside.

Here in Washington, 40 percent of all revenue measures (61 percent of tax increases) enacted during the biennium are temporary measures. These measures, which totaled about $369 million, are scheduled to expire at the end of fiscal year 2013. Temporary tax increases include:

Enacting a 0.3 percentage-point B&O tax surcharge on business services ($242 million);
Extending the sales tax to certain purchases of bottled water($33 million);4
Imposing higher taxes on beer produced by large, multistate breweries ($59 million);
Enacting a new, two-cents per 12 ounces excise tax on carbonated beverages ($34 million); and

The largest component of "sales tax" does not come from "retail", it comes from sales tax on construction projects (think new Wal Mart building, new Elwha Bridge, new water treatment plant, road projects, etc.) and car sales. Retail stores taxes are down, as would be expected.

Port Angeles generated $374.26 million in 2007 and $312.6 million in 2010.

Sequim generated $307.5 million in 2007 and $260 million in 2010.

How could Sequim go from $307.5 million in 2007 down to $260 million in 2010?

Oh, wait, PA went down also, expected of a dying economic base. But us old farts will enjoy the peace and quite when the others move on.

I wish that the book stores would move to higher ground before the big shaker takes out the downtown area.

I mean, isn't the owners of book stores supposed to be intelligent monkeys?

Nobody cares what you think

Really? Said just yesterday on the last thread:

"I particularly like Billy's comment about downtown."

But, more interesting is the post. The whole thread consists of comments about the state of our community. Except this last one. Nothing interesting to contribute, just a personal attack that has nothing to do with what is being discussed.
