Expanding the Port Angeles Utility Advisory Committee

Another position might be added to the 5-member Utility Advisory Committee. Nippon has a permanent seat on the committee, which could give the impression of unfairness.

City Councilman Max Mania brought up the fairness issue. He said “for a lot of people, perception is reality.” He also said adding a new position would increase public input regarding utility rates.

The City Council will discuss this at their September 20th meeting.

According to the article, the Nippon representative "recuses" himself from discussions about anything pertaining to Nippon, so why is he there, then? Nippon is the ONLY industrial power user, that they have a totally different rate structure for the water they get, so why have them on the "utility adviscory committee" to advise the city on the rates that the REST of us must pay? It doesn't make sense to have a representative of Nippon on the committee at all. Instead of Nippon, how about putting representatives from other businesses and utility customers on the panel --- such as the hospital, the school district, restaurants, shop owners, Westport Ship Yard?

They should do whatever they can to make it cost more and be less effective.

If I remember the article correctly, the 5 member committee consists of 3 current city council members (who then vote on their recommendations when presented to the full city council!), one member currently employed at Nippon, and one former Nippon employee.

Sounds fair, objective, and reasonable to me!

Public input regarding utility rates, hahahaha.

Hey, the city provides you with power, you'll have to pay whatever they decide you have to pay in order to keep that supply coming to you.

Can a commercial entity do it cheaper for you? I have no idea, maybe, maybe not.

I liked the old PUD'S, good service and good rates, but even that is changing.

Sigh....

So ---- the PDN this morning tells us that the City hasn't been charging Nippon a base rate for the electricity it uses. All other customers must pay a base monthly rate($13/month for homes; more for businesses) in addition to electricyt consumption charges. It sure sounds like Nippon's presence on the Utility Advisory Committee has certainly paid off for them.
More subsidies by the little guys for corporate America ---- uhhhhh -in this case, corporate Japan.
