Nippon Biomass Project OK'd

The State Pollution Control Hearings Board has ruled in favor of Nippon's biomass project.  Seven environmental groups had appealed Nippon's construction permit for the project.  The project is now expected to be completed by early next year.

Nippon didn't seem worried about it, just kept working on the plant.

In a democracy, the people with the most money usually do get to do what they want.

In Washington State, global corporations with money usually get to do whatever they want ---- even if the profits from all the taxpayer subsidies go overseas.

This is what I would call a dilemma -- both choices (to approve or not to approve) carry a lot of weight. In this economy, the jobs seem to be most important, but not at the expense of clean air -- so what to do? Damned if I know.

Stop the biomass project and watch your house value drop another 30%

Anon 6:10 PM ---- You mean my house value will drop because a polluting industry that is a stinking eyesore on the Port Angeles waterfront might go out of business? I figure the existence of this dirty mill has already depressed the economy of Port Angeles about as low as it can go, and if the mill goes, my property values can only improve.

Yes, Anon 6:10, please do explain how stopping the bio-mass plant will cause my house to lose 30% of its' value. I'm very interested in how that can happen.

If the houses above the Nippon plant didn't have the Nippon plant as their "view," but instead, had a nice perspective on the spit and the strait, it'd be what realtors call Million Dollar Views. As it is, why would you even want to have windows on that side of your house?

Nippon is going under no matter what, folks. The existing jobs there are on a death watch. They will (possibly) be replaced with a handful of biomass jobs. But a whole lot more air pollution and visual blight are a certainty if the biomass goes through.
